Sad day for hockey

Post by JSR »

I am surprised no one has posted on this yet but yesterday was a very sad day for our hockey community as we unexpectedly lost Bob Suter to heart attack. At 57 he was much, much too young to have passed. Most people know Bob as a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team (he is also the first player of that team to pass away), but he was alot more than that to Wisconsin hockey, especialy southern Wisconsin. He was always tremendous to me and my boys and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him and by the entire hockey community. Hope you guys all say a prayer for his wife and family.

RIP Bob Suter. I feel bad for the Suter family for sure. I lost my 40 year old sister 4 years ago, and it's not easy loosing someone so close. I, we, up here in Cloquet MN high school hockey country express our deepest condolences to the Suter family. Your son, Ryan, is an amazing hockey player and person. We here in the State of Hockey are very lucky and appreciate everything he does for our state on and off the ice. He learned his way by looking up to a great dad - that is obvious.

Very sad indeed. Bob excelled as a player, coach , and mentor for young players.

He played for Madison East High School before starring at UW and then earning a gold medal with the 1980 Olympic Team.

He was the type of player that teammates love to play with and opponents hate to play against, very gritty but also fast and skilled. He scored 16 goals and 44 points as a defenseman in the 78-79 season at UW.

I remember a quote where he indicated that he was very surprised to be picked for the Olympic team. He had been under the impression that Herb Brooks hated him during his days as a Badger.

Among the players he coached are several aside from Ryan that are very familiar to Minnesotans including Phil and Amanda Kessel.

Condolences to Mary and the entire Suter family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Bob Suter Memorial Fund - "It's All About the Kids", Capitol Ice Arena, 2616 Pleasant View Road, Middleton, WI 53562.

I am sure HB hated Suter who was known for being a rough player with plenty of box minutes, but when you need a collegiate player to go into some tough international games, HB was strong enough to look beyond Badger-Gopher games and pick someone that fit that part of his ideal team.

Surprised he never played a game in the NHL.
