With Bellows and Zuhls gone, what is your assessment of comparable talent level, without considering dynamics, coaching, good night/bad night, and other issues?
Seems to me LVN actually has better raw talent at each position on 1st line, D pair and goalie. Your thoughts?
Your thoughts on how LVN matches up on 2nd line and D pair? Advantage Edina, or close to even?
I think when gets to 3rd and 4th, Edinas got the edge. I notice Giles has been giving playing time to his 9th and 10th graders

Don't forget the big sheet of ice. Who would that favor more?WestMetro wrote:Green4 and Sats81

I really don't know much about Edina's goalie. What I do know is Edquist for LN didn't look sharp vs Farmington and didn't have a great fall in the elite league. I'll leave goaltending at that.WestMetro wrote:Green4 and Sats81

My assessment is if Edina holds the Poehling line to 2 goals or less they will win. (I think they will).
Edina has a HUGE advantage with 2nd line and probably even larger advantage with their 3rd line. As for a "4th line" LN really doesn't have one, nor did they skate one in the Farmington game.
If there is one single player who will be the difference maker in this game it is Garrett Wait. If he has a big night, look out. The way LN plays and coaches though you won't see them "shadowing" one player or singling a guy out. While I am certain they respect some of the great individual talent Edina possesses and will be aware of them while they are on the ice, I don't think they will ever game plan around a single guy.
As much as I would love to see LN win this game I think Edina's top end depth is too much for ANY team out there. I like Hornets by 2, maybe 3 goals.

Edina doesn't really have a single top line since they've split up Malmquist and Wait; they just have a 1A and a 1B. The Wait line, which is their "2nd" line, has scored more than Malmquist's line. Both are lethal, though given the Poelings' chemistry, I'd still probably take them as the best line in this game, especially at this point in the season.
Boe doesn't have the hype of Edquist, obviously, but he looked plenty good in the Turkey Trot, and his defense takes good care of him. Edina defensemen rarely gamble needlessly; they don't need to, with the forward talent in front of them. That's something North has to be careful of. Their defensemen are obviously skilled, but if they get too adventurous, Edina will rip them apart in transition.
I agree that discipline is the key to this game for North, but not necessarily in a stay-out-of-the-box way, as Edina's PP isn't firing on all cylinders quite yet. What is important is that they play within themselves, don't panic, and don't try to do too much. Playing Edina is tough enough, but so many teams let the Hornets get into their heads. Edina knows this, and they have players like Mismash out there who are just trying to instigate the other team, rile them up, and get them off their game. Patience and steadiness, not bolts of adrenaline, are the keys to beating the Hornets.

First line for Edina against Cretin was Malmquist, Wait and Mishmash and they were dynamic most of all that game.karl(east) wrote:Edina doesn't really have a single top line since they've split up Malmquist and Wait; they just have a 1A and a 1B. They only had the one PP and it was late in the Third but all 5 players touched the puck and it was a tic tac toe x3 for an easy backside goal. So for that one PP it was firing.
Still waiting to hear from Green4, but in the meantime another thought would be lets not underestimate the presence of Lakevilles 2 NHL DraftWatch list Dmen. If they play the Mike Taylor Eagan style of strong but entirely legal defensive zone checking, they should be to slow down Wait, Malmquist and company. Im guessing McNeeley and Sadek will be playing a lot of minutes.
Only problem with that is Sadek is the opposite of physical and rarely will you see him engage in any contact and McNeely has slower feet. Altavilla is a very solid all-around D-man for LN. He will see just as many mins as Sadek and McNeely. Drops off from there as rest of their d-men are inexperienced. Keaton Pehrson is a soph (drafted into USHL by Waterloo this spring) but is VERY raw and doesnt know how to play hockey yet. (he will be good, but is gonna go through some growing pains first) Speed and shiftiness of Edina's forwards will give them trouble tonight.WestMetro wrote:Still waiting to hear from Green4, but in the meantime another thought would be lets not underestimate the presence of Lakevilles 2 NHL DraftWatch list Dmen. Obviously, replacing two players with that amount of talent is hard, but Edina has plenty of kids to step into their roles.WestMetro wrote:Green4 and Sats81

I don't know a ton about North, but I agree they probably have the best top line, d pair and goaltender. Though, I think overall the best player on either team belongs to Edina, in Garret Wait.
The second line and down I will give an advantage to Edina. Some of the guys on the lower lines maybe aren't the most skilled players, but they can usually skate with most teams, play defense and play a role that is physical and not much fun to play against.
Boe, though probably not as talented as Edquist, is plenty good. And just like what Karl said, Edina's D plays safe, they don't typically give up too many great chances.
I think Mismash will have a big output on this game, most people look at how he agitates players and forget that he is also quite talented. He does have a skill for agitating people though, and that could certainly help the Hornets. Im actually very curious to what he says that gets people so riled up, he is one of the best in that department in recent memory.
I forgot my prediction. I'm going with Edina in a close one 5-4green4 wrote:Obviously, replacing two players with that amount of talent is hard, but Edina has plenty of kids to step into their roles.WestMetro wrote:Green4 and Sats81

From 2-3 games I saw McN and Sadek in Elite League, they seemed to have the footwork to control their D zone and showed me some capability of physical play to slow down Elite forwards.. Frankly, I think that is LVilles only chance tonite, so I hope McN , Sadek, and Alty all step up... Wouldnt hurt to see some Poehling checking in the neutral zone also,
Im still a little puzzled by Edquist giving up so many against Farmington, he had a good Elite season against top talent.
I believe that both teams have lost talent and will not be as good as they were last year. That being said, Edina is still the dominant team and will prevail tonight. Repeat of State score Edina wins 8-2
I think you really hit the nail on the head with that. Losing Bellows and Zuhls is a much bigger loss for Edina than most seem to think. LN had a couple Seniors last year (Arnold, Hazlett, Klotz, etc) that were huge for them in terms of secondary scoring other than the Poehlings. They also provided leadership and brought a lot of intangibles to the table. Those guys are MUCH bigger losses than it would appear on paper. Max Johnson is about the only LN forward I forsee putting up any respectable offensive numbers other than the first line. He skates very well and can hammer the puck.

Watch them both more closely. I am not criticizing them, I am simply saying Sadek will RARELY take the body, and McNeely has a very tough time recovering if he gets beat to the outside with a small, speedy forward, and I have seen him get turned inside out often. My opinion (most would disagree with this) is that Altavilla is there best all around d-man. Very confident he would be a D1 hockey player had he not already committed to play D1 baseball. They are all very good HS d-men though.WestMetro wrote:Sats81

Edquist looked lost in Farmington game. He's gonna get tested early and often tonight.
Sats, D1s and NHL CSS seem to be higher on McN and Sadek than you.
Anyway, I still maintain those two are going to be the keys to the game. If they can use their size and footwork to protect Edquist against rushes and traffic in the low slot, and if Edquist has a quality nite, then the Poehlings can do their thing and maybe LVN can get a few by Boe and win by 1.
If those LVN DMen dont step up, then it will ugly early.

That's great, but CSS is going off of POTENTIAL. The Gophers and CSS is intrigued by Sadek because of 2 things: 1) His Bloodlines (Grandpa, Dad, Sister and Brady) and 2) His Skating.WestMetro wrote:Sats, D1s and NHL CSS seem to be higher on McN and Sadek than you.

Gophers have a tendency to recruit guys who can skate better than they can play HOCKEY. McNeely has the higher ceiling and both kids are big. Zuhls is a better HOCKEY player than both. Just my opinion. They are both very good HS d-men.
