Class A Rankings 12-28-14

Post by HShockeywatcher »

With so many teams not playing any games last week, there wasn't a lot to change this week. Detroit Lakes is added to the Top 20 and a couple teams move a few spots. This week will do a lot to either solidify some teams in or out of the rankings.

Happy Hockey this week!

1. [1] Duluth Marshall (9-0)
The Hilltoppers' won a close game in which they were outshot almost 2:1 against a solid BSM team by 1 goal. This week they host their holiday tournament putting the best of WI against the best of Class A. Can they meet and beat one or both of Hermantown and/or East Grand Forks?
This week: Mon vs Madison Edgewood, Hilltopper Holiday Classic

2. [2] Hermantown (7-2)
The Hawks pick up an easy win over Eveleth last week but the real test is this week. They start things off with the #6 ranked WI team, will face Duluth Marshall if their first round results are the same and will likely face a MN team in the third game.
This week: Mon vs Notre Dame Academy, Hilltopper Holiday Classic, Sat vs International Falls

3. [3] East Grand Forks (7-2)
The Green Wave face a Delano team who's lost by 5 to a Breck team they've already beaten and are on the significantly easier side of the bracket. Can they have the same record as Duluth Marshall or Hermantown in their first two matches to buy a meeting? They follow 3 games in Duluth up with hosting a team who has the beginning of the week off.
This week: Mon vs Delano, Hilltopper Holiday Classic, Fri vs Blaine

4. [4] Mahtomedi (7-1)
The Zephyrs picked up something both Duluth Marshall and Hermantown have this week; an OT win over Roseville. This week they go on the road and play 3 teams they should beat, with Monday being the biggest challenge. While it would take a huge stumble from one of the teams above them for Mahtomedi to rise this week, they do play Duluth Marshall next week.
This week: Mon @ Grand Rapids, Tues @ Hibbing, Wed @ Virginia, Sat vs Henry Sibley

5. [5] Breck (5-3)
The Mustangs play in a Silver Division this year they should win easily and follow that up with a conference game on the road. Breck has lost to 3 of the teams above them already so a stumble above them will be what it takes for any movement to take place.
This week: Mon vs Mounds View, Schwan Cup Silver Division, Fri @ Providence Academy

6. [6] Warroad (7-3)
The Warriors will likely pick up at least 4 wins this week as their 5th game is against their first opponent this week with a winning record.
This week: Mon vs Grafton/Park River, Tues vs Osseo, Wed vs International Falls, Fri @ St Cloud Tech, Sat @ St Cloud Cathedral

7. [7] Thief River Falls (4-5)
The Prowlers start the week off with an important game for state ranking and end it with an important game for section seeding.
This week: Mon vs Alexandria, Tues vs Fargo North, Wed vs Detroit Lakes

8. [8] Alexandria (7-0-1)
The Cardinals play 3 quality opponents this week and if they are still without a loss in a week will rise at least 2 spots next week.
This week: Mon vs Thief River Falls, Tues vs Detroit Lakes, Wed vs Crookston

9. [9] St. Paul Academy (7-1)
The Spartans are still missing a notable win despite only losing to Mahtomedi. With both Denfeld and Bemidji in their holiday tournament, they have an opportunity to jump quite a few spots depending on who they beat this week.
This week: Tues vs Apple Valley, Duluth Heritage Classic, Sat vs St Paul Johnson

10. [11] Delano (7-1)
The Tigers have benefitted from playing only one tough opponent to date, but they will add 3 more this week. This doesn't seem like the good Delano teams of recent years and this week may not be the best measuring stick to learn a lot about them.
This week: Mon vs East Grand Forks, Duluth Holiday Classic

11. [12] Blake (2-4)
The Bears started the season ranked just outside the top 10, have only lost to 3 teams in the Top 10 and CDH and beat Orono. This week the only teams that could do much more ranking are on the other side of the bracket in Orono and Hopkins.
This week: Mon vs Chisago Lakes, Schwans Cup Bronze Division

12. [13] Orono (3-4)
The Spartans start their holiday tournament against a team who beat Hermantown and have the possibility of a rematch with Blake. All they can do this week is add some more to the win column and hope others prove to not be worthy of their ranking above them.
This week: Mon vs Hopkins, Schwans Cup Bronze Division

13. [14] New Prague (8-4)
The Trojans started the season with 7 wins and have lost 4 of their last 5. Considering who they've lost to and beaten, it's hard for them to drop much farther at this point. The loss to Hastings doesn't look good and there is little they can prove with a win over North St Paul this week.
This week: Mon vs North St Paul

14. [15] St. Cloud Cathedral (5-4)
The Crusaders pick up a road win over Denfeld and have the opportunity to pick up a couple more quality wins this week. They are probably the only team to play only teams with winning record this week. The climb a spot and sit right behind the team they lost to to start the season.
This week: Mon vs River Lakes, Tues vs Sauk Rapids-Rice, Wed vs Sartell, Fri vs Warroad

15. [16] Luverne (7-1)
The Cardinals continue to win and pick up a win over a quality Totino-Grace team last week. This week they aren't in the toughest of holiday tournaments but have potential match ups with Spring Lake Park, Minneapolis, Minnehaha Academy and Bloomington Kennedy.
This week: Mon vs Winona, Schwans Cup Open Division

16. [17] Fergus Falls (6-2-1)
The Otters are in the odd position of having a 1 goal loss to Alexandria, not much else to show for, and a loss to Cathedral. They could very well to a top 10 team by season's end, but this week won't help much with that case as they host two MN teams they should beat and a ND team with a winning record.
This week: Mon vs New Ulm, Tues vs Morris/Benson, Wed vs West Fargo

17. [-] Detroit Lakes
The Lakers have 1 goal losses to Warroad and Fergus Falls, a tie with Fergus Falls and allowed 2 goals total in their other 5 games. This week they could prove to be the 4 section 8A team deserving of a top 10 ranking as they play both the 7th and 8th ranked team.
This week: Mon vs Fort Frances, Tues vs Alexandra, Wed @ Thief River Falls

18. [18] St Cloud Apollo (2-2-2)
The Eagles have ties with both Alexandria and Bemedji but a couple unfortunate losses on their schedule as well. This week they can pick up a couple section wins.
This week: Mon vs Sartell, Tues vs St Cloud Tech, Wed vs Sauk Rapids-Rice, Sat @ Northern Lakes

19. [19] Spring Lake Park (6-3)
The Panthers are likely much better than this ranking as their 3 losses are all to quality AA programs, but not much has been proven by their wins. With the potential to play Luverne this week, as well as 2 other Class A teams, this will be a really big week since they only have 2 Class A opponents left on their schedule, neither who are currently ranked.
This week: Mon vs Minneapolis, Schwans Cup Open Division, Sat vs Irondale

20. [-] South St Paul (7-3)
The Packers have yet to lose to a Class A team, but have also yet to play a quality Class A team. They got the nod over Denfeld for this spot as their loss to Jefferson was by a smaller margin.
This week: Mon vs St Paul Johnson

Teams to watch

St Paul Como Park (9-0)
The Cougars will likely pick up 3 more wins this week as they play 3 teams with a combined 4 wins this week.
This week: Mon vs Becker, Tues vs Windom, Wed @ Richfield

Sartell-St. Stephen (7-1)
The Sabres have played one quality opponent and lost, which is why they aren't ranked despite only having one win. If the rankings hold up, they will only pick up one win this week; can they win 2 or more?
This week: Mon @ St Cloud Apollo, Tues vs Providence Academy, Wed @ St Cloud Cathedral, Sat vs Bemidji

[10] Duluth Denfeld (7-3)
The Hunters hosted a Cathedral team who hasn't risen back into the rankings and lost by 3. This week they have the potential to play teams like SPA and Bemidji, two teams who would help them rise quite a bit in the rankins.
This week: Mon vs Hudson, Duluth Heritage Classic

Totino-Grace (3-6)
The Eagles picked up a close loss to Luverne, so that doesn't help their case much. This week they have on game against a team all of Marshall, Hermantown and Mahtomedi have beaten in OT. With only 3 Class A losses at the moment, there really is no ceiling for Totino if they start winning.
This week: Tues @ Roseville

Great Rankings,

I'd like to hear some feedback about the notion that Alexandria should leapfrog both Thief River, and Warroad. There isn't a lot of comparable games, but Alex hasnt lost, and both of those teams have.

Marshall or Duluth Marshall?

Down here in SW Minnesota, we have a school named after the town of Marshall. It would be nice if y'all started calling The Marshall School of Duluth either Duluth Marshall or The Marshall School of Duluth.

Thanks!

My comment was that they would leap frog if they are still undefeated in a week; they play TRF and Detroit Lakes this week. Warroad has beaten both of those teams by a goal. So, if Alex beats both and wins either by more than a goal, it's pretty clear, but if they happen to win both by 1 goal, then I would give the nod to the undefeated team in comparing them to Warroad.
Lots has to fall in place for that to happen.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Alexandria the rest of the way. In 3 weeks they play a Bemidji team who has beaten 3 teams from 8A and plays Hermantown the week before them. Sky's the limit at this point. One week at a time.

Alexandria 6, Detroit Lakes 3. The Cardinals will play Crookston this afternoon with the winner being the only team to go 3-0 in the TRF Tournament.

Not only that, but Bloomington Kennedy beats Luverne in student numbers: 1560 to 350. So, Kennedy scored a goal for every 520 students (0.00192) versus Luverne scored a goal for every 175 students (0.00571). So, 0.00571 >> 0.00192, and I declare this a WIN for Luverne!!

The goals per sheep tilts the ice in the other direction.

Oh yeah ... buffalo too. Blue Mound State Park isn't too far from Luverne.

Saw Warroad had a really really rough tournament this week with a loss to Osseo and barely squeaking passed International Falls. Interested to see how their weekend goes... I'm guessing Roth is still out with an injury?

Warroad has been hit hard by injuries this year. Roth may be close to coming back, but Jaycox is out with a broken jaw and several others are trying to play through injuries as well. It may be close to section playoffs before the team is healthy again.

I was wondering what was going on with Warroad. They looked like a solid club when they beat Rapids. Thanks for the info.
