Numbers are numbers; only some posters are ridiculous. Minorities can also play ice hockey. Sengvongxay's family probably came from SE Asia (I am guessing Hmong) and look at how well he does. Luverne really does draw from a small pool of students unlike most Metro schools.edgeless2 wrote:Well if Bettman is correct, your fun facts of enrollment numbers at respective schools look even more ridiculous.Teak wrote:Bettman is correct. STrib article on St. Paul Johnson was really good. Nice to see an inner city school maintain a viable ice hockey program. Just as nice to see a small southern school build a decent program in only 10 years.

1978 is longer than 10 years.
I was restating what the Fox Sports North commentators were stating. Actually, Luverne became a state-sanctioned team in 1999, so that makes it 15 or 16 years, not 10. But 1978? They were probably a club team that didn't compete officially within the State High School League. And, ya know, 15 or 16 is closer to 10 than 101 (SPJ).BP wrote:Teak wrote:Numbers are numbers; only some posters are ridiculous. Minorities can also play ice hockey. I was just going to ask about the jerseys. (not trying to take a shot) Why were they the only ones not wearing the camo? The other teams obviously were in on it together, other teams had same camo pattern and design for the most part.notTONIGHT wrote:Those werent "normal" Jersey's.nu2hockey wrote:Does any Luverne fan know why their team chose to wear their normal jerseys for Mn Hockey Day?
Luverne's sweaters appeared to be their normal game sweaters.....
I was wondering how the other teams came to have similiar but school specific special sweaters.
4 of the 6 teams chose to have the camo sweaters, those 4 were metro teams and the
2 who chose not to have them(Luverne&Duluth)
obviously were not metro

How did you referring to student enrollments as an excuse as to why Luverne might have lost this game turn into your championing the cause of minority players? I simply asked the question of the percentage of the student body trying out for hockey at each of these schools as a retort to your tossing out enrollment numbers for Johnson and Luverne. Backpedal much?Teak wrote:Great game that was televised by Fox Sports North. Good to see two public schools battle it out outdoors. Next game is between two Metro all-star squads.
I was impressed with St. Paul Johnson, they have a decent record (11-5-1) considering they have to play Metro all-star squads on a regular basis. This was a good game for Luverne for the experience.
Fun facts:
Student enrollment
Johnson h.s. 975
Luverne h.s. 308
Three of Luverne's top six scorers are freshmen. Only one is a senior. Even if Nelson leaves early, they will be a force for several years to come just based upon the current squad.
A call or two going the other way or Nelson's last second shot going in rather than hitting the post, and the result would have been different.

Luverne is still the team to beat. It might not be as hard as some make it sound, but, they are still the team to beat.
With all of this talk of "D1 talent" one would think teams, especially Luverne, would be more competitive out of section.... Beat Totino Grace though.
I was surprised and somewhat disappointed to hear about the loss to SPJ. Doesn't reflect well on the section.
Does anyone know if there is highlights of the game somewhere? Didn't get to see it live.
Highlights are here... JMO, but the MOST informational highlight is the VERY last camera angle on the 6th goal Johnson "Scored".

Spilled milk now... but that's a really sad way (in the State of Hockey) to end/decide an entertaining game.

I was at an event over the weekend and EVERY game had an Independant Off-ice Officiating Evaluator watching and recording each game. This league now has resorted to bringing it's OWN officiating crews to help resolve the seemingly neverending issues with officiating Hockey. Not a strong statement of support for the current USA system. Granted, there's not economic availability for video review, but I can't see ANY official who gets a chance to see that 6th goal from the last video clip/angle... allowing it.
So I have only been up since 5AM and have had only 3 cups of coffee so I am still a little sleepy.fastncrash wrote:SPJ come out firing and taking NOTHING away from them, but...Bettman's Bender wrote:Lets not pull the enrollment card quite yet here if that is your intent..... The fact, is that an entertaining 5-5 game with a minute to play was decided on a Goaltender Interference No-Call.
The fans got ripped off is the BIGGER controversy.

Game played Saturday late morn/early afternoon, complaining about a perceived non-call comes out on Tuesday morning, by one person. Where was Cardinal Nation to scream at the top of their lungs about this even by Saturday evening when they had made the 4 hour drive home? One guy is butt hurt 3 days later.fastncrash wrote: The fact, is that an entertaining 5-5 game with a minute to play was decided on a Goaltender Interference No-Call.

And I was entertained! I don't feel ripped off and the outcome of the game was pleasing to me. And before you bring it up, the shot at the end of the game by Luverne was after the whistle.

Didn't get to attend either, but recorded games to watch later. I would agree that the winning goal should have been waved, but not the first or last noncall that influences the outcome of a game. A little surprised but pleased to see the thread not blow up with protests. Give credit to SPJ for executing a game plan that worked for them and effectively took out the high flying offense of Luverne. Saw some pretty harsh words for the cardinal D and GT on the HDM thread. Everyone sees things differently, but I thought the top D pair had a guy quick to jump up (nice player) and one that stayed back, which is what you want. Goalie was tough on the tougher shots in tight and let in a couple 'easier' shots that he saw well? IDK. Playing an aggressive offensive style of pinching and holding the line tight you may give up a couple odd man rushes but defense isn't just two players. Only the second time I have seen Luverne play (first this year) but I would commend them on showing some grit/heart/will coming back in a fun game to watch. Didn't feel robbed..... but then I am not from Luverne.

Since I am still on, I will speak for myself here. I got interested in the Luverne story last year with their undefeated run to the state tournament and by seeing a few kids on the elite rosters over the summer. Started following this thread a bit last year and now am hooked by not only the upstart program story but the crazy devoted fans here and the sheer entertainment 'value'?. I don't always understand the inside jokes/slams but still interesting. Stick around you will see what I mean. And also get hammered at the slightest provocation, which keeps things entertaining.ShootNScore88 wrote:Curious why the weakest Section in the State gets so much attention on this site. Luverne is like Red Wing of the late 90s. They have a good group of kids right now and play in a very weak section. Of course no one as good as John Pohl. They will have a 4 to 6 year run and then be done.

This thread and the loyal 3A supporters remind me of the Park Rapids Peanut Gallery back in 2007-08. Park Rapids had a nice 18-6-3 2006-07 season with a tie vs EGF but no other games vs the top of 8A, pretty much a middling 6A schedule with some bottom tier 8A teams mixed in. They then beat Crookston in the section quarterfinals before getting shutout by Warroad in the semis. Then in 07-08 came out flying, started 5-0-0 and then were able to take advantage of some timely EGF player suspensions and get the 6-5 OT win over EGF. They ran the string to 20-0-0 including a 4-0 win over Thief River Falls. The Peanut Gallery was on fire, they were hot! They felt they were getting no respect in the polls hovering right around the 17-20 spot, and other than the Park Rapids faithful, there was no buzz for the Panthers. It looked like they were gonna do it, an undefeated regular season, maybe Crookston in Game #22 might break it up but the Panthers were rolling. Game #21 was the season rematch with Kittson Central in Park Rapids. Park Rapids had beaten KCC 6-1 earlier that season in Hallock so they probably expected this to be a roll at home. Well, that is why they play the games! Kittson hung the first loss on the Panthers 3-2 and the Peanut Gallery all but disappeared. Park Rapids came back the next game and beat Crookston 4-3 in OT and then hung matching 8-0 shutouts on Detroit Lakes and Morris/Benson and the Peanut Gallery started to find their voice again but the boys dropped a 2-1 decision at Prairie Centre to finish the season with two losses. In sections they dominated Lake of the Woods in the quarterfinals before a full strength East Grand Forks rolled them 8-3 in the semis in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated. The Park Rapids season finished 25-3-0, out of the polls and a QRF ranking of 20th of 104. Park Rapids had D1 players, Zach Lerhke was 54-45-99 and went on to play at MSU-Makato.
Now we have Luverne and 3A. One team with a loud fan base that owns a fancy record in a weak section but cannot get it done against mid level teams from other sections...but we are all supposed to bow down to them because of their greatness. Getting 3A at state pretty much ensures you get to play at the X on Friday and Saturday! Luverne will fall back to 3A mediocrity soon enough, just like Park Rapids, just like everyone else. If you don't believe it, just look at Totino Grace and Chisago Lakes from last year to this year. Yep, I am hooked on this thread just for the comedy!

Okay.
I watched to see if the puck went in, it did.
I watched to see if the SPJ guy was in the crease, close but no.
I saw the interference, but was it created by the Luverne player, I watched it again. Perhaps. But at live speed I have to give the ref the benefit of the doubt, no interference.
And that is the one thing you have to get over in hockey, lots of rules, fastest game in the world, refs are going to get it wrong, especially at the amateur level.
But still a good game.

As to 12th grader. Yup, got some weak teams in 3A. Yup, the best team fights and scratches to be considered #20 (18, 15 pick your number).
But there was a time when it was section 7 or 8 or Edina or Mpls SW or SPJ.
Times change. Things will change in 3A. Luverne will slide a bit, others will rise a bit. But what we (all hockey lovers) is for 3A to get strong, 1A, 4A. So everyone in the State of Hockey can enjoy the game and every little mite can dream about playing at the X some day.
We love this thread because they have a passion of playing competitive hockey. Sometimes they are stupid, some times smart, but, as said, always entertaining.
I hope Luverne gets the chance to get smoked by Hermantown. Not that I want to see them lose big or even lose; but because hockey needs the perennial power and the Cinderella story.
