State Champs Since 1990 with 3 losses or Less

Post by WestMetro »

I dont know how a person defines "modern era" or "best team", but further to the discussion about LVN Panthers and the top tier all time "modern era" AA championship teams, here is a list of state champs since 1990 with 3 losses or less. I was surprise that cutting it off at 3 produced a list of 14 teams in 25 years. I guess you could cut it off at 2 losses or 1 loss if you wanted to. I suppose you could add in a bunch of almost undefeated teams that got knocked off in the qtrs or semis

Many of these teams and state tourneys I remember well, others not so well when I was busier working for a living and raising a family.

Obviously a wide range of pure individual player talent and competitive schedules amongst these teams, but all must have had the TEAM intangibles that we are talking about potentially with the Panthers-- to battle thru all the way to get to the AA trophy.

(Someone can double check me to make sure no screwups)

I think you are missing all the teams last win...they would have played 28 total games prior to the 2001 state tournament and 31 total games for the 2000-01 season and after.

Not to get too far ahead of the remaining week of Regular Season, as well as Sections, but........

Im reposting this earlier thread of modern era teams, to show the list of rare company Lakeville North and Edina will be in if they face off in March 7 championship with 0 and 1 losses.

I guess the one thing I didnt do was pairup/confirm whether, or if, how many times an undefeated team played a 1 loss team in the championship game. Or for that matter in any State Tourney round.

No doubt some others have those answers at their fingertips, if not could research MinnHock again.

(I see Holy Angels and Roseau only had 1 loss each when the faced each other in 1999 semis. Moorhead and Cloquet had 1 loss each when they faced each other in 1993 qtrs , but neither played Jefferson

I don't think Edina and Lakeville North are that good. I don't think they are anywhere close to as good as that undefeated Jefferson team. I think the rest of the state is really average this year. So their bloated records reflect the lack of competition.

Going back a couple more decades to the 70s and 80s, here are the State Tournament Teams who had undefeated regular season. Also State Tournament pairings between two undefeated teams, an undefeated team vs a 1 loss team, and two 1 loss teams. Appreciate input on corrections or omissions.

Regular Season Undefeated Teams 70s & 80s Who Went on to State Tourney
(if opponent had only 1 loss, that is indicated in parenthesis)

1970 Southwest and Edina both Undefeated, SW won title game
1972 Edina undefeated , lost to Grand Rapids in Qtrs
1974 Edina East undefeated, beat Sibley (1 loss ) in Qtrs, went on to beat Bemidji (1 loss) in Title Game

1977 Roseau undefeated, lost to Edina East (1 loss) in Qtrs
1978 Roseau undefeated beat RJM (1 loss) in qtrs., lost to Edina East (1 loss) in semis

1979 Grand Rapids undefeated, lost to Roseau in Qtrs
1980 Hill Murray undefeated, lost to Grand Rapids in Title Game
1983 Hill Murray undefeated, won State Title
1988 Warroad undefeated, lost to Edina in Title Game

Tourn Games Where Both Teams had Only 1 Loss Going Into the Game

1974 Bemidji beat Kellogg in qtrs., both had only 1 loss to that point
1985 Burnsville beat Bemidji in qtrs, both had only 1 loss to that point
1987 Kennedy beat Greenway in semis, both had only 1 loss to that point

Fact checking is such a lost art form.
