Section 7A Final

Post by HockeyBum »

So what new strategy does marshall have to execute in order to get by Hermantown? I watched both semi finals and aside from Hermantowns slow start in the first I don't see the depth in marshall. All I think marshall can do to win is hope their goalie wins the game for them.

What are your thoughts

5-2 hermantown

Well I don't think a lot of people care on here to discuss single A hockey. This thread was way down the list. I didn't see it until I scrolled down. I just think that the Hermantown Hawks are really good! Duluth Marshall has excellent players, but is their team deep enough? McClure and Dow's departure killed the teams depth. Can Marshall win this game? I say yes they can. Score the first 3 goals and hold on. But I think the Hawks will win this game. I think it's great Hermantown is in 7A.

Marshall has had a nice year. They did drop 2 games to the Hawks 6-2 and 5-2, however the games were closer than the score makes them look. I think the game will be closer than the 1st 2 meetings, but I don't see Marshall being able to pull it out. I see Hermantown wining 4-2 or 5-3 with an empty net goal. Should be a good game regardless.

Because they play against all northern teams in their section playoffs or because they are not in 7AA? :o

If Marshall plays defense like they did against Denfeld, they will be right in it for sure. Both the Hawks and Toppers have stepped up their play in the postseason and are looking great. I would compare the teams thusly:

Goaltending: Advantage-Marshall. Not by much, but Murray's experience and tough schedule this year give him an edge over Olson, who has also been excellent.

Defense: Advantage-Marshall. Also not by much. While Aamodt and Gotz are a formidable pair, I think Fralich, Krenzen, Hanson, and Liberty are a better group overall. Hanson in particular has been outstanding as the team's 3rd best D, IMO.

Offense: Advantage-Hermantown. And this is a decided advantage for the Hawks. Their first line blows Marshall's out of the water, and their 2nd line of Valure-Jacques-Amundsen may be as good as Marshall's top line. For me, this is what really separates the two teams.

Coaching: Tie. Plante always has his guys ready to play, but Flaherty has done a great job getting this team to exceed almost everyone's expectations, especially after the offseason defections.

Intangibles: Advantage-Hermantown. The Hawks have beaten the Toppers 10 times in a row. That's a mental hurdle I feel plays in favor of the Hawks.

As always, they play the games for a reason, and I will be at Amsoil cheering for a close game and then cheering for the winner at the X.

Good luck to both teams!

Hermantown is the more skilled team here. However, both teams have had very good seasons. It is hard to beat a team three times in one season. Marshalls goalie has to step up in this game and I think he will. 3-2 Duluth Marshall

So you don't think East and CEC breathe a sigh of relief each season that Hermantown declares itself "unprepared" to go AA?

Oh heck no! I would love to see the Hermantown Hawks in 7AA! We play them twice during each season, but it would make the section 7AA playoffs that much more exciting.

When Marshall opted up, Mike Randolph immediately called Brendan Flaherty to congratulate him. I don't see why it would be any different if Hermantown did so as well.

For many of us northerners who follow AA teams or teams with histories of success in the one-class tournament, the prestige of northern AA hockey matters more than winning and losing.

Is that a one off fact or is it personal knowledge of the phone call. Just wondering from all of the bad blood prior. I call it bad blood some maybe call it classism in hockey terms of course.

You can't retain prestige without winning.
If there are too many years of no Northern
Champions there will be no more prestige,
just a colder version of Southern Minny.
Hopefully brighter days ahead for 7AA and 8AA

Congrats to the Hawks for winning 7A by taking down an excellent Marshall team for the third time this season. If mahtomedi wins tonight, the state tourney is setting up for a very evenly matched final four, assuming the top seeds win.

7A overall had a great year, with 3 teams that spent most the year in the top 10, another team that was top 15, and another quality squad or two that have some good young talent on the rise.

Here are my picks for the All 7A teams:

1st team
F-Ryan Kero (Sr.) Hermantown 24-34-58
F-Nate Pionk (Sr.) Hermantown 28-26-54
F-Cam McClure(Sr.) Denfeld 12-22-34
D-Scott Perunovich (So.) Hibbing 11-42-53
D-Nick Thompson (Sr.) Denfeld 13-31-44
G-Alex Murray (Sr.) Marshall 1.69-.927

2nd team
F-Zach DeBoom (So.) Hibbing 20-14-34
F-Cole Koepke (Jr.) Hermantown 17-19-36
F-Derek Farrell (Sr.) Marshall 12-19-31
D-Wyatt Aamodt (Jr.) Hermantown 9-24-33
D-Jordon Fralich (Sr.) Marshall 4-22-26
G-Lucas Murray (Sr.) Virginia 3.24-.910

3rd team
F-Chad Nordean (Fr.) North Shore 19-14-33
F-John McKenna (Sr.) Marshall 13-12-25
F-Zach Skelton (Sr.) Eveleth-Gilbert 21-16-37
D-Lane Krenzen (Jr.) Marshall 6-12-18
D-Eric Gotz (Jr.) Hermantown 3-19-22
G-Luke Olson (Jr) Hermantown 1.63-.927

All-Rookie Team
F-Chad Nordean (Fr.) North Shore 19-14-33
F-Zach DeBoom (So.) Hibbing 20-14-34
F-Matt Valure (So.) Hermantown 9-12-21
D-Scott Perunovich (So.) Hibbing 11-42-53
D-Ryan Sandelin (So.) Hermantown 3-8-11
G-Luke Olson 1.63-.927

Coach of the Year
Brendan Flaherty-Marshall

7A was loaded with excellent defenseman and goalies, but the forwards leave a little to be desired as a group.

Is there a section in Class A that could put together a team better than this? 1A No
2A Maybe
3A No
4A No
5A No
6A No
8A Maybe

7A fans, is there anyone else that I missed you feel should be on one of the All 7A teams?
