Sorry, I can't abide the St Thomas Cadets after witnessing them abusing other teams' cheerleaders. I guess they think they are real tough guys picking on high school girls. Maybe it is good practice for the future, if their wives don't indulge their Peter Pan Syndromes.

They may be part of the 1%, but from what I've seen, they are strictly low class.

The fans of the other team, the Goalie, the coach, the guy driving the Zamboni who misses a spot, player who loses an edge, the mascot, a random person walking by, all targets and all in fun.

You mentioned abuse of teenage girls, that is a broad and potentially serious accusation. Did you stop this abuse? Did you report the abuse?

Remember the days with Burnsville, Blaine and other big public schools going back and forth. Sitting in section 206 chanting "2-0-6...suck our D!ck$" Just for fun.

Also might not be a entire student section, but Grand Rapids always has the best band in the state.

Osseo brought a drove of bandwagon fans to their playoff game vs Maple Grove last night, and it was the best game I've seen all year. The game itself was action packed, having all the elements of the best hockey entertainment: seesaw on the scoreboard, fights, penalty shots, breakaways, and best of all, a section & a half of Osseo kids who were loud, rude and obnoxious. I felt like I'd gone back in time. Maple Grove had a few rows of kids to counter, good enough to make it fun, but nothing close to what Osseo brought. In a situation like that you can't help but almost physically feel that the team is feeding off of that energy, and nearly aided a big upset.

I graduated in 2009 and remember going to a warroad-Crookston game. One of crookston's players took what we felt was a cheap shot. When we looked at the program we noticed his name was Morgan. So after that point whenever he was on the the ice we'd all chant his name. We didn't say Morgan was a girls name or anything vulgar, just chanted Morgan over and over. One of the Crookston parents felt it was necessary to come over and tell us how horrible we were. After the game our AD told us it wasn't appropriate and I still don't see how it really crossed a line.

We did get in his head though. He was ejected later for another bad hit in the 3rd.

Sorry boys, misdirection won't change the facts. I'm neither a mom nor a dad of the victims. Actually, I did not care for the team STA was playing. I took my grandson to his first hockey game and wanted him to cheer for a winning team. We sat among the STA adults, a bit to the side and above the cadets. I am well experienced with a full range of cheers and taunts far beyond anything typically making the rounds at the X.

But, a couple hundred boys making personal taunts at little high school girls betrays the true lack of quality of the cadets, whatever commander claims to oversee them, and their plastic excuse for parents (who seemed amused by their boys' "antics"). It was not in good fun, entertained only the 1-percenters on that side, and appeared to put one of the girls in tears. It took a 5-year old 17 minutes to come to the conclusion that "they aren't nice".

I saw nothing from the cadets in the ensuing years to change my low opinion. I'm sure they will find some self-esteem at the expense of the vulnerable, or buy an imitation of it somewhere along the line.

Now, back on topic. The Blaine student section was outstanding in 2011, particularly hilarious against Edina. The Wayzata student section did admirably in 2013 dealing with the Hill-Murray kids. Edina has not impressed me during the regular season, but they seem to know what to do at the X. I guess they have the experience.

On the downside, I think the Centennial students have the best chance of making the jump to UK soccer hooligans.

So it is ok for a group of boys from one team to rip the mascot costume off the opposing teams cheerleader and throw it around the arena destroying it. I'm no prude, but if it was my kid that was involved in that he would have known my displeasure and that's putting it mildly. Interesting how a school with a lofty of mission statement about character has such a disrespectful student section and adult fans who would allow and defend that type of behavior.

That's the difference between what used to be cool, and what's cool today. What's cool today, is nerdy passiveness. I hate the age of The Big Bang Theory. Like the dorkier you are, the hotter chick you're gonna get. How backwards is that. (In my best old timer voice) In MY day...if any parent had the male anatomy to come over to us & tell us we were horrible, we would have sieved them immediately & told them to go chase themselves. You don't fear getting in trouble. Especially at school, and at school events. We are not talking criminal records & jail time. What are they gonna do, suspend you? It's not like you're going to school to be a brain surgeon. And if you are, then I'm wrong, and yes you should steer clear of detention. Otherwise, have at it.

And just to be clear, personal attacks are the funniest. We used to taunt goalies to no end, on a first name basis. And made sure he knew he not only let his team down, but his entire town hated him. The minute he stepped onto the ice for warmups he would get sieved. In sections, we would print out a blown up picture of the opposing team's star player's face, and paste it between the words on the giant "season's over" banner that was unraveled after the game. And then, when our team lost, we got taunted to no end. And it was great. All in good fun.

I have a philosophy that I feel more people should spend time looking into. And that is: everything is funny. You feel a lot less stress or any kind of negative emotion when you're laughing. You know what I mean?

Besides, if I'm between the pipes and some geeks in the crowd are putting me on the spot & harassing me, that would be my favorite kind of motivation.

During the section 4AA tournament at Aldrich, they aren't even allowing the kids to stand up. During the OT of Stillwater and Tartan and Roseville vs Mounds View, they let the kids stand up though. If it's ok for overtime, why not just let them stand the whole game?

I agree 100% I think alot of people on here know how I feel about this topic. Just check the things have changed on this forum topic to see that, but yeah AD's sit in the section even cops everyone wonders why the sections suck it is because they have a chain and a cage at every game waiting to get thrown out for saying sieve. Sad times...

You deliberately exaggerate the terms needed to describe the situation to hide and rationalize your real disdain, for the institution and its students.

Rather than lumping them all into one big stereotype, go have a conversation with anyone of them. Be sure to bring your grandson as I am certain he will be asked his name with an extended hand and a hand shake. Be sure to ask what there fathers or mothers do for work. Alot of engineers, teachers, nurses, laborers, mixed in with your doctors and lawyers. In fact, there are a great number of the student body that can not afford to pay for any or all of the tuition. This is the main reason it costs so much for those that can afford it.

I also invite to walk behind a small group of them in the aisles between sessions. Don't bring your grandson for this one. You won't believe the insults, and the glares at the boys in full uniform. It is a joke, the insults come mostly from other high school kids, calling them PLEASE BAN ME and pole suckers etc, etc, etc.

But the most disappointing part is the glares from guys like you, who have made up their mind that the whole lot of them are looking to

If STA is the superb institution it purports, then with the privilege of attending can either come a sense of responsibility or a sense of entitlement. Fine individuals can become ugly when they form a mob. Based on the likely outcome in Section 3 this year, I expect the cadets will get a chance to disprove my perceptions. Perhaps there are some true leaders in the group than can guide them to the high road.

Just to be clear you are likening high school sporting event chants with wife beating and going to an all male school to being part of the lost boys?

If so I have two things to say 1) you're a very deeply out of touch individual and the stereotyping that you just asserted is absurd. 2) When you were in high school who did you spend a majority of your time with? A close group of male friends. I remember my high school experience and I think it was pretty normal. The majority of time I spent with the opposite sex was out of school and on the weekends. The all male bashing is antiquated. Get some new material. I am sure St. Thomas will have some good new AA gold this year.

I am seemingly having a hard time letting this go and I doubt that I will get past your deeply rooted hatred for the cadets but for starters those "little girls" are peers to the cadets so trying to add age is irrelevant in the situation. Also it seems like you have more a problem with their "plastic" parents. I honestly have no idea what that means. Are you calling them ken and barbie dolls? Are you saying they all have had cosmetic surgery? I don't know what kind of backwoods riddles you are trying to speak in but you clearly have a socio-economic hatred toward the cadet community. Maybe you should teach your grandson to not alienate people on their financial situation. You my friend are the walking stereotype you dislike so much.

Well this is getting tiresome, so let's wrap this up. The original topic has totally derailed. I will offer a final response, then will comment on this topic no further. Then you can have all the final words you want.

First, Import, if you are having trouble letting it go, then you are probably taking all of this too seriously. I am here because I am a fan of high school hockey and enjoy the dialogue and exchange of information and insights. If it is no longer enjoyable for you then step away.

The several of you (or one cadre with multiple profiles) can direct all the attacks at me that you like. You don't know me and draw all sorts of ridiculous inferences. I'm comfortable that all your desperate assertions are untrue. I have to deal with the absurdity of censorship by political correctness every day. I also understand abuse in all its forms well enough to use the term correctly.

So, returning to the facts. I had never paid attention to A hockey and did not know STA from any other school. I added the A games to my tournament experience. I chose to root for STA because I was assured they would win and I wanted us to cheer for a winner. We sat with the parents of the cadets and I became a fan with the zeal of the converted. I wanted to like STA and was ready to adopt them as my A team.

The conduct of the cadets was bad. The parents expressed amusement and appeared to condone the behaviors. Most of the cheers were typical of all schools. However, the cadets crossed the line. Yes, it does matter that it was a group of hundreds of high school age boys abusing a small handful of high school age girls. The cheerleaders were constrained from responding, had to remain and endure the abuse before thousands of people, including family and friends.

Yes, the cadets inflicted emotional and psychological abuse on those girls. You seem to be out-of-touch in trying to make it something other than it was. Based on the behavior of the cadets and the reaction of their parents, which I witnessed, I decided I was not a fan. My conclusion was not one with a preconceived bias nor based on prejudice. My choice was a judgment based on personal observation, when I wanted to perceive something very different. I guess you could call it post-judice.

The STA contingent earned my opinion and lack of respect on their own merits. I have no doubts they will have many opportunities in the future to change my mind.

Both New Prague and Northfield had great student sections tonight. Farmington will have a great one Thursday night as well, it's hard to discount they the Lakeville North band though, they are students and they, along with Grand Rapids, are about as good as high school bands get.
