How does Blaine do it?

Post by greenway1969 »

Blaine is heading to the X and should have been the prior two years too. They always seem to have highly skilled offensive players that can bury the puck. I never see their youth teams ranked or at a state tournament, yet they are a top 10 or 15 team most years. What's their secret?

Youth program is always productive. They graduated more talent in one year last year than most coaches see in 5 years. But, theyve blown more playoff games to give fans lasting nightmares. The only thing I can guess this year is : new coach being a fresh face ? Kids last night were confident and unrelenting, they were on a mission and skated circles around a team where their two previous games had been very close wins.

Though I'm a bit older and never got the chance to see any of the current players play when they were younger, I do know that the last few years Blaine had high expectations. The senior class last season went to state in peewees and bantams I believe. The current seniors/juniors I believe have also gone to state in youth hockey. The big problem, IMHO, is that the past two seasons the pressure mounted because the expectations were so high. The new coach is likely also a big reason. Carroll has been involved with the Blaine summer program and has run an offseason weight lifting program for the Blaine kids since I was about 13 (ten years ago). He's all business and is all about work ethic, which while it hasn't been overlooked in the past, is something that I think comes first with Carroll over talent. He was a good choice to take over the program after Aus, especially due to working with the program for years, not much of a transition period for players.

I think they've also been loaded with Coon Rapids' best.

No idea about this team, but I remember them getting quite a few top end Coon Rapids kids off of their top twenty ranked bantam team. Maybe the seniors last year? Kinda the way things are now and changes at the youth levels are even higher. The Centennial AA bantam team has kids from all over the north metro.

Lino Lakes, Lexington, Circle Pines, and Centerville. Is that "All over the north metro" Bo? If there are others, name them.

Same with your Blaine - Coon Rapids connection. Name them.

We all "hear things". I've read you for a while Bo. I expect better from you than innuendo.

Biggest reasons:

Lots of ice time for youth players with all of the sheets they own/rent (4).

They don't lose players to private schools or juniors. I can't remember one that left early prior to graduation since 2005 other than Michael Brodzinski.

They have a few families move into Blaine, but only two or three players that moved in for junior or senior years over the last 10 that ended up as starters.

Youth hockey is all about having 12 strong players from one class. High school is about having 12 from three classes. They've always had some top end players on every team.

The current team is all home grown talent except for one starter that moved in during Peewees.

Strong eff season program and good coaching.

This year's team is comprised of only 3 players that got regular shifts last season in HS and the rest were JV. They will graduate 3 of top 4 D, one third line F and two 2nd line F.

The only Coon Rapids players that Blaine has had in recent memory that received significant ice time were the Schied's. Their dad is a teacher at a Blaine elementary school and they both entered Blaine as freshmen.

There were 5 Coon Rapids kids, 2 played top six forward roles, 1 was a top 4 D, 1 was a goalie, 1 eventually went back to CR. plus 1 or 2 from Cambridge area. I believe they have all graduated by now.

Centennial AAs have one open enrolled from Spring Lake Park. Otherwise, I believe they are all Centennial kids

Remember Centennial school district serves the communities of Cirlcle Pines, Centerville, Lexington, plus the southern half of Lino Lakes, the eastern part of Blaine, and even a small part of Hugo. So kids could live in any one of those towns and legitimately attend Centennial schools.

Regardless, Bo's point has merit.

How many 'The Scheids' were/are there?

How sweet is that ? Obviously "tired" has his facts together. I know, I know, innuendo is a lot more fun...

Thanks for chiming in Ref.

Thanks for dialing it in Bo. Any rebukes? Or has Bo nailed it?

Had only heard of the SLP kid. But it's not as though I'm out there looking for info either so it's possible.

I'm sure most of the state tournament teams have a few that came on along the way.. The talent seems naturally drawn to contenders.

Because if there is one thing that is certain, it's youth hockey rankings determining who will be good in high school lol.......

The kids on the varsity team did have a lot of success when they were peewee's and bantams, but things will change next year, they do not have a lot of talent in the lower ranks this year, there JV team does not have a lot of talent, the BAA team is a mess. The coach will be tested next year. Their PWAA team looks good, but the 2 brothers that are the stars on that team will be heading to Shattuck or Hill Murray when old enough.

The two "little" brothers are not stars of that team. One has problems with his size/strenth/speed. Watched them five or six times this year. They do have two very good pee-wees at Mn Made. One's father was coach AA pe-wees last year.

Bo you are right two were from Fl.
Back-up goalie and one 99 skater.
