Tournament History

No team has won the State Hockey tournament with more than 8 losses (not counting Class A and Tier II). If tradition continues, Duluth East and Eden Prairie have no chance at winning this tournament.

I think this would be true, and would bet that is the case. LV seems unbeatable to me, and Edina is very impressive.

But I am hoping one of the 8+ loss teams can make some history. I love cheering for the underdog!

And wasn't one of the 8 loss teams(1981 Jefferson) not really an 8 loss team. I say that because IIRC they had to forfeit a number of games that year for the use of an ineligible player. The lost something like 2 games on the ice that year. And IIRC Apple Valley also had the same issue that year as they had a losing record (at 11-13) entering the tourney but a number of the losses were by forfeit and not on the ice.

Correct on both counts, sir!

I also believe at least 8 teams have entered the finals without a loss only to have their only loss be in the Championship.

I know East did it in 97

I was wondering about that (what teams did that were undefeated coming into the Tournament) but didn't feel like doing any research.

The East '97 thing stung. Only one tie (Hibbing in their final regular season game), and Edina did pretty much to East what East did to Edina tonight. Had the perfect game plan and played it to perfection.

Hill Murray lost to Rapids in 1980 in the championship game 2-1.
