The Lakeville Schools

Its been 10 years since Lakeville split into 2 schools and it seems like North is always the more powerfull team in every sport.....Can someone please explain the reason for why North is so much better then South? And Same with Duluth East vs Denfield?

I would argue that Lakeville South has had the better overall hockey program over the course of the last decade. You're right about other sports though. North seems to be better across the board.

Some possible factors: Maybe it has something to do that when the school's split, the old Lakeville HS became Lakeville North. So I believe South had to rebuild their youth programs, hire all new HS faculty and coaches, etc. It also took a few years for them to catch back up to North in enrollment.

As for hockey, this was just a very special group of kids for Lakeville North. I would expect them to fall out of the top 10 within a year or two and have a tough time getting back. Similar to Centennial and their 2004 team.

Really depends on the next wave of kids North recruits/brings in. South was a nice team this year with some real young talent

The Lakevilles and the Duluth schools are completely different scenarios. The past two years excepted, South has been at least as good as North, if not better in recent years; North upset Kloos and company twice in sections before they finally broke through as seniors.

Duluth, on the other hand, has a huge socioeconomic divide between the east and west sides. Denfeld just does not have the resources that East does.

While I can't speak for sports other than hockey, South has had a ton of talent come through their youth program that for whatever reason have chosen to play high school somewhere else. Just since 2010

Osteberg UMD
Shroeder (Zach) RPI
Reid Airforce
McNeely (X2) UMD UNO
Parizek UNO
Brevig OSU
Kloos UMN
Swaney UND
Lewis Mankato

Edquist.....I think lives/lived in the south district but was never part of the youth program.

Half of these never played at south.

This year alone the North roster included 4 regular skaters who played for South in youth hockey.

Should be noted that 7 of these kids would have been on the 2010 team.

The resentment toward the HS program at south goes all the way back to the split, certainly would have been interesting to see what might have been.

During this same time North has had a great deal of talent as well:

Crandall UND
Skjie UMN
Lindgren SCSU
Winicki SCSU
Peterson Colgate
Aerntz Bemidji
Perry Army
plus 5 on this years team. (counted one on the south ledger)

The youth program has done an outstanding job of producing high end talent....one high school has done a much better job of keeping them around.

I believe there are different rules that apply within school districts when there is more then one high school. North had several players who live in the South school boundaries, (Enabek one of them).

Rules where athletics are concerned are the same, intradistrict open enrollment is allowed so if you move as a freshman you are fine. Anything after that means you need to follow MSHSL rules.

Just what I heard at one point, but someone said North is the Hockey school and South is the football school. Not sure if there is any truth to that.

Well for the past 5 years its been all North for boys football, basketball, hockey, and baseball. South has had a few good hockey teams (Kloos led) but they only went to the State tourney one year that Kloos played for them. North has won a State title in basketball and now hockey, plus they have been to the state semifinals and finals in football and have owned South on the football field. South has not beaten North in Football for about 5 years.......... So nope, it hasn't been very even at all

Since this is a hockey blog, North has also dominated the boys hockey scene too....... in this city.......

We'll have to agree to disagree on the hockey part

North knocked off south in a couple section finals but from 2010 -2012 south was 6-3 against north. Once the team building got under way North has dominated. Put McNeely, Altivilla and Enebak on the south squad and things might be a little more grey. North also did a fine job of solving a goaltending issue......TWICE

Bottom line......had South run their coach out like North did things may have been different.

Wow, what a great list of talent Lakeville Youth Hockey Program developed. It is too bad most of the kids didn't stay and play together or against one another, it would have been some good hockey. Now a days, kids have to have a reason to stay and play for their high school or with their friends. With the number of opportunities out there for good players now a days, I do not blame kids for leaving. If I were a good player and the high school program (coach) did not offer what I needed to move up to the next level, I would look elsewhere also.

Not sure what you are talking about but South has been the better hockey program. Especially if you take out the first couple years of existence when they had no Seniors and no players with varsity experience (All stayed at North). It's no secret around Lakeville that North's new coach recruits players from South, Farmington, Rosemount, Prior Lake, ect.. I know a lot of coaches aren't to fond of him down south.

Interesting. So Trent actually recruits players himself? Do you have proof of this or is it a typical game of telephone? Do you know this as fact or are you just spouting off on a public forum?

As far as South having the better program that is laughable. With "better" I am assuming you are referring to "winning"...Since 2006 State Tourney appearances for LN: 2006, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015. Consolation Champs 2011, Runner Up 2014, State Champs 2015.

South tourney appearances: 2008, 2012 with a 3rd place in 2012. Take Justin Kloos off of the south teams from 2010-2012 and they don't have a prayer. LN has dominated this series since Justin graduated. I've never seen a HS coach ride one player as hard as Weber rode Justin in those years. The dominance of this rivalry by North will just continue for the next several years as high end players who want to win will leave South as Weber certainly isn't helping them in anyway.

PS: Do you think Eigs cares if "coaches down south aren't too fond of him"?

Since the hub is nice enough to archive the last 6 years I thought I would try and quantify this argument with the stats they provide.

Since the 2009-2010 season:

North 9 wins
south 7 wins

Goals for

North 56
South 52

Pretty tough to say North has dominated, Now if we brake these 6 years down into two groups of three it tells a much different story. Probably not just a coincidence that since the coaching change and subsequent migration of players to the north side North is running at a 6-1 clip out scoring south 39-17.

Just for the fun of it!

Kids that made an impact moving from North to South.....none that I can think of

In fairness to both teams.....STA picked off about a half dozen from Lakeville in the same time frame.

Well the numbers certainly don't lie, so maybe my term of "domination" was incorrect. I just wonder without Mr. Hockey on the southside from 2010-2012 how different those numbers would be. Lets be honest here, without one of the best HS hockey players in the last 10-15 years running and gunning over there the numbers would favor North heavily from 2010-present as cabinets were pretty bare over there without Justin.

The 5 south kids who went to North that had an impact....Mcneely, Alty, Enebak...who else?

Rutt and Smith....I know that's a little thin but they play/played.

You could make a similar argument about the brothers. They directed the ship while 2/3's of the best D corp in the state came from the other side. Can you picture a blue line with McNeely, Alty, Olsen, Knoepke and Ess?
