USHL DRAFT CONTEST

Post by usahockeypuck »

There seems to be a number of self-proclaimed experts in regard to high school hockey in Minnesota. Therefore I would like to issue a challenge, a contest of sorts to see how many of you are willing to put your reputation on the line.

I would like to see you put together a draft list for the USHL draft coming up on May 12, 2005. I know that many of you have dreamed the dream of being an ordained expert, so here is your chance.

Contest Rules.

1.&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Draft a list of thirty players from the state of Minnesota and rate them 1-30 (1 being the highest player selected and so on). The winner will be declared by having the highest percentage of players from their list being selected in the draft with in the first 30 Minnesota High School Players selected. YOU ARE NOT LIMITED TO SENIORS IN HIGH SCHOOL.
2.&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp As a tiebreaker come up with a list of the first 11 players taken in the first round. This list can include players from high school, junior A, junior B, AAA Midget, etc from across North America (US and Canada). The highest percentage of players taken will win, and if needed the order that they are selected.

3.&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Deadline for entries will be 12:00 AM May 11th, 2005

I will put up $20 hard cash to the winner. I will email the winner and post the top 5 prognosticators. Good Luck.
<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

I'd like to think that I know some about the senior/junior class of hockey players, but to list the top 30 Minnesotans taken in the draft is next to impossible. I know the criteria for being a USHL draft pick isnt much, but come on, 30 kids? The mathmatical odds of even getting half of those correct must be in the millions.
I'm sure if you change the # from 30 to like 10, somebody may get 5 or 6 correct.

But it is your contest.

I will partake. It will take a while to put together the list but I would think that everyone will fair better then Triple Deke expects.

The most difficult part will be finding out who is already on a roster and who isn't.

Good idea!

most of the top players that would be selected out of minnesota have already played in the ushl oshie, lee, vandelvelde, hardwick, fisher, pilot, conley, ambroz...lucia and some others i might be forgetting about who have played in ten or more games in the ushl

Drafts

Post by scottparker »

Those guys will be on the protected list, and shouldn't be drafted, unless they were released by their team. You'll probably find several juniors (currently) on the draft list, and perhaps a couple of sophomores if they have shown an interest in playing next season with the team. By now, most of the underclassmen know if they're on the draft list or not as I don't believe a team will waste a draft choice on someone who doesn't plan to play for them next fall. The USHL team will wait and draft those kids on the "futures draft" and hold their rights through the season, assuming that the kid will play at the end of the season.

This is a great contest, but alas I feel that I don't have enough knowledge of the kids to pick any. GOOD LUCK to those who try, my hat is off to you..<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Good idea!

I am going to take a shot at this one, but the tie breaker will be tough. I do not have a clue about the outstate players.

Blades of Glory

Post by JLS 81 »

Shutout,
I just read Blades of Glory. One heck of a book. I have to say that is one very good hockey book for anyone out there who has yet to pick it up please do so. I learned a lot about todays athlete in that book and how things have changed. Like him or hate I have much respect for Coach Saterdalen and what he has done for developing young men and time and sacrifice he put in to developing Bloomington Jefferson hockey. As well the book solidified my reasons for not favoring the private school "all stars". I am not against private schools by any means but in todays society the perception is spot on by most observers on just how talent seems to find their way to some schools. Shutout you may already have expressed it but what is your take on the book?

JLS81: I did straighten out a few of the private school loudmouths on this topic in an earlier thread regarding the book, but i will cover it again for you.

I loved the book also, but I knew all of the characters so I always like to get an objective viewpoint like yours.

The book was pretty close to factual about my experience with the Jefferson program. I thought they made way too much of two points.

1. The cutting of kids is very tough for any coach, I know that all coaches get their insides torn out the week of tryouts and Sats is no different. If you want to be a top program you are going to have good players that do not make the team and that is the good and bad of a top program.

2. The pills they were taking were bought at GNC and were legal at the time ( later found to be dangerous) and unfortunatly were being used widespread at that time by many athletes in all sports and not isolated to Jefferson.

The rest of the book I think was very typical about the pressures and experiences that kids have in high profile sports programs in Minnesota. Sats built the Jefferson program from nothing and the success that you have comes at a price sometimes.

The one thing that several Jefferson hockey players told my son was " the game becomes more like a job after High School so enjoy it" I take that as they had a very good experience in High School.

I am glad you enjoyed the book, I did also!

Agree on your 2 points

Post by JLS 81 »

Shutout,
I agree on your 2 points as the writer leaves this impression on the reader. That the kids are taking an "illegal" or banned substance and that they are using something to enhance their performance and the coach is enabling by "turning the other cheek". I am reading the book once again to see if I come away with that same impression.
Cutting kids: the writer in my opinion goes too in depth on this subject and alludes to some trajedies occuring which originate from the pressure of hockey, that is an opinion and not 100%. Objectively one can say that there is major dissapointment but to take extreme measures on your life would warrant deeper problems in my opinion.

I'd like to see a couple lists after the draft has started, I'm not too familiar with many Minnesota kids, only know of a few, and most aren't eligible to be drafted anyways. Good luck to those who gave it a shot, may the best guesser win <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

My List

Post by juniorhockey »

The following is my list of the thirty players who I feel have a chance of getting drafted this year into tommorows USHL Draft. Putting together the list was very difficult and there are certainly more kids who will get drafted that I don't have on my list. Please realize, I am not affiliated with the USHL and this is in a random order.

Eric Olimb - Warroad
Alex Kangas – Rochester Century
Ryan Guentzel – Hill-Murray
Dan Sinn - Blaine
David Fischer – Apple Valley
Matt Godlewski – Elk River
Andrew Conboy - Rosemount
Chris Connolly – Duluth Marshall
Scott Kozlack – Duluth Marshall
Mike Montgomery - Centennial
Travis Vermuelen - Centennial
Mitch Ryan - Cloquet
Patrick Fogarty – Forest Lake
Brett Barta - Moorhead
Shea Walters - Hibbing
Josh Brodeen – Warroad
Carl Sneep - Brainard
Matt Overman – Bloomington Jefferson
Brian Schack - Totino-Grace
Cory Loos – Moorhead
Ben Youds - Maple Grove
Derek McCallum – Hill-Murray
Isak Tranvik – Benilde-St.Margaret’s
Matt Wanvig - Osses
Jay Barriball – Holy Angels
Aaron Gens – Lake of the Woods
David Grun – White Bear Lake
Tyler Matson – Holy Angels
Andy Inderieden – Breck
Josh Bergren - Centennial

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... rhockey at: 5/11/05 11:39 pm
