Duluth East vs. CEC History Question

With CEC coming to Duluth next Monday, a chance to pull a sweep, who here knows the last time CEC had the season sweep over East.....if it ever happened?

I do not know the answer, just curious. I would imagine, if it has happened, it was quite a while ago......80's?

2002-03 season. Cloquet won 5-4 in Cloquet on 12/12 and 6-3 at the DECC on 2/4.

Prior to that it was probably the 93-94 season where Cloquet won 7-6 in OT at the DECC and 7-4 at the barn. But we ended up losing the game that really counted.

There are many. The 93-94 bench clearing brawl at the Barn before the 2nd period started was a beauty of its own. It epitomized what this rivalry is/was like.

Cloquet also swept the regular season series in 04-05, with 5-2 and 4-3 wins; as in 1994, however, East knocked off the Jacks in the section final.

As long as were reminiscing, that 05 section final is probably East fans' favorite memory in recent history. The Hounds were underdogs in that one and were outplayed for long stretches, but Chris Sall had a big night in goal, and East tied it up in the third period. In double OT, Kyle Michela, a senior defenseman who'd never scored a varsity goal, slipped in the game-winner.

I worked at the DECC from 2002-2013 and I remember the East/Cloquet games in the old DECC Arena. Those were fun times. The whole arena would get packed even for the regular season games(almost like a UMD game). Yes I worked at some of those games that were mentioned. The Dave Brown game in 2008 was one of the best. Though I still think the 05 section finale that East won in double overtime is my favorite. Who can forget the poignant image in the Duluth News sports front page of Cloquet goalie Reid Ellingson laying prone on the ground heartbroken and dejected after giving up the game winner.

Yea. It seems like Grand Rapids an Duluth East is more of a rivalry these days though. I was living in Duluth East back in 05, and a Hound backer. I went to that game with some friends. I had no idea, at that time, the history/rival I was watching. I grew up in Wisconsin and didn't know much about rivalries.

They may have had a rivalry but, unlike these days, no one cared about it. Each had their brief moments (especially East circa 1960-64), but I remember Cloquet having more of a natural rivalry with Proctor and maybe Hermantown, and East with Central and Denfeld. Looking to be educated here . . .

Yes DJ. I lived in the woodland neighborhood in East Duluth for 6 years. I wasn't a diehard, but I definitely supported the Hounds. I remember when Randolph was fighting for his coaching life. His players had a tent setup in Burger Kings parking lot on 21st and London Road. I'd stop in there and support the boys and Coach Randolph. My brother-in law was a baseball coach at the high school too.

I'm guessing it ramped up further in the late 80s/early 90s...Derek Plante's Jacks wrecked East in in the playoffs in Randolph's first year, and East beat Cloquet in OT in the 1991 section championship, which was East's first in a while. Cloquet won all the meetings the next two years behind Langenbrunner, but the games were close, and then there was the huge fight and the East playoff win in 94. Then, after a run of East dominance, Cloquet made things really interesting from 01-08.

Basically, it grows out of a history of playoff games since the 80s, most of which have been very tight.

Once they met in the 1975 Section 2 final, it heated up. Although as someone who went to East during that time, Denfeld was the team East fans most liked to detest.
