Coach Nitti was trying to get the team's shortcomings fixed by getting goalie Mike Scott from Hill-Murray. I am not sure what will happen now.

Hmmm....I thought it was against Minnesota State High School League rules to recruit? At least blatently. I know, I know....couldn't resist commenting.

Re: Nick
Kids transfer, Scott I'm sure was looking for a place to play and since Mounds View hasn't put out a decent goalie in ten years he probobally thought he could play 26 games.

New Buzzword "transparent items"

Good luck to the interim coach, might be fun right up to tryouts and then yuck. Kodiak,

Wasn't that Kevin Gorg (last MV coach)who Tom Osecki brought to St. Thomas Women's program as an assistant coach and got the head job when Tom went to UW-Madison. Kevin is very happy now that he left that school district, Nitti and Kevin are good friends. It is wrong that the school districts' policy allows parents to go directly to the AD's Office first as opposed to go to the coach. Go to coach 1st then if that doesn't work, 2nd have a meeting between the parents, AD and coach. How is it possibly to fire a coach when he has no oppurtunity to defend themselves. MV's district is weak, as they are afraid of the parents and would rather tarnish a coaches' image than to find the truth. That handful parents knew that if they band together they can lie and tell half truths to the AD and the AD will take their word as gospel and let the coach go without due process. The coaches union should get involved as MV is not the only district that I'm sure this happens.
MV better get ready to go back to the dark ages of their past.

Good point Kodiak, Bring back Hoiland so they can go 4-22 every year. I wonder if having a winning percentage in the low teens had anything to do with him being run out of town. He should be glad he got out before the parents scalped him too.

Any other coaches out there taking a beating?

Re: file not found
This bill has been dead for over two months. If you seach by "house file", using HF0068, you can get to the file, but here is how it reads...

Subd. 3. [NOTICE OF NONRENEWAL; OPPORTUNITY TO RESPOND.]
2.2 A school board that declines to renew the coaching contract of a
2.3 licensed or nonlicensed head varsity coach must give the coach
2.4 timely notice to that effect. If the coach requests reasons for
2.5 not renewing the coaching contract, the board must give the
2.6 coach its reasons in writing within ten days of receiving the
2.7 request. Upon request, the board must provide the coach with a
2.8 reasonable opportunity to respond to the reasons at a board
2.9 meeting; however, any portion of that meeting at which
2.10 educational data are discussed must be disclosed under section
2.11 13D.05, subdivision 2.
2.12 [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective October 1, 2005.

The house file passed in both the House and Senate fairly handily, but was veto'ed by the governor back in mid-May.

I can empathize with coaches who are fired under circumstances like these (small rabid group of parents + spineless administration), I've had it happen to me at the youth level. But unfortunately, everything isn't always "fair". That's what we tell players when things don't go the way they expect them to go. That's what we tell seniors who have spent 2 years in progams and are cut because there is a good sophomore class coming up. That's what we tell talented back up goalies who never get in a game. Coaches need to be able to live by the terms of "at-will" employment as well.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... lap>Reggie Dunlap at: 7/25/05 10:53 am

Thanks for posting the language of the proposed bill, Reggie. It's nice to read a post with a refreshing voice of reason. And I am saying that with sincerity, not in mockery.

Athletic Director
Reggie, excellant point regarding coaches.

I confess to not knowing about the Mounds View situation other than what has been presented on this thread. However, the issue does not appear to be about Coach's Rights. It appears to be about an Athletic Director/Administration that is less than competent.

Unfortunately, their Union will protect these people and their incompetency. A coach can be fired, these people are in place until they move on their own or retire.

This is a situation for open enrollment/transfer (not always about talented players to better teams). If parents/players are in an undesireable situation, they need the ability to move to a better situation without seeking permission from another bureaucrat, or moving from their neighborhood.

Nitti
I don't usually get into these sort of discussions , however I caught wind that Moundsview's coach got thrown out by a group of parents. I read all of the comments and agree with many of them and I wanted to vent. My first question/comment, why do HS coaches have to put up with this BS. HS coaches have a passion for what they do, get paid a few bucks, and try to help make men out of boys/women out of girls. The neat thing is when the horn sounds and the child becomes an adult they look back and are usually thankful for the life lessons their coach taught them. If they weren't a PP specialist, they have comes to grip that maybe coach was right, I never could hit the net. Let's call it an acceptance of reality. This leads me to my next question, I get the feeling some, not all parents who get worked up in these types of messes either never played an organized sport or their still pissed they didn't crack the 1st line, same person who blames the ref, etc. I think you catch my drift.
Don't get me wrong, coaches can make mistakes! If my little Johnny, is the best thing since Johnny(Pohl)Ha!, and the coach doesn't see the same player I do, well then I have options. Let's transfer my stud player over to WBL or Centennial. If I really want to test the water and can be away from my son for more than a day, let's send him the USHL. No wait, I can't do that. He might have to play tough and learn the game. I don't actually want him to progress and we find out if he's really a gem, I just can't face the reality that my kid just isn't that great! What are you teaching the kid? In a couple of years are you going to follow him to work and get his boss fired? It's about learning discipline, work ethic, team work, etc. We don't grow at the top of the mountain, we grow in the valleys. Usually if the kids a 3rd line player, he's a 3rd line player. What we would call a role player or a soph., not strong enough or learning. Why don't these parents send their kids to a different school? He's not good enough, not strong enough, or even better, not tough enough! Someday, Minnesota hockey parents will take the bottle out of little Johnny's mouth and tell him to grow a set. Until then, we will just blame the HS coach and the administration. I don't know this coach, but do you think he's out to screw these kids over? Give me a break!!
It's the quote my old man used to say "If you are good enough, they will find you. Don't bother the coach making a couple of grand enjoying his hobby. Don't bother the AD who has an agenda besides baby-sitting parents and have to legally defend a school because a parent actually supports the fact that it's okay their little Johnny streaks across the Football field at halftime. These "adults" need to get a clue! Also, don't bother the Supt. who is trying to educate tomorrow's future.
Does getting rid of the coach make your kid better?
Again if your kid is so good, send him to Flin Flon, oh and by the way, try having a conversation with that coach about your son's ice time!! This whole story could explain the mentality it takes to make it in hockey and why so many (not all) minnesotan bred hockey players where diapers instead of breezers.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... t>3offT at: 7/26/05 10:09 pm

Communication
Great point! I wonder how many of the Mounds View parents had the guts to call Nitti, or talk to him in person about their problems/questions. I have a lot of respect for parents who are able to sit down and talk about this stuff with the coach! If they're going strait to the AD with their grievances, well, it shows that they don't have any guts... not respectable. I don't know what the situation was here, whether or not Nitti made himself available and was receptive to, or at least listened to concerned parents, and I don't know that the parents went strait to administration, or if they tried to talk to the coach. Anybody else know?

Re: Mounds View is likely looking for a new coach
Is Nitti the best coach in the world? No. Is he the worst? Not even close. By my estimation, he has done a decent job.
Consider that M.V. hasn't seen a state tournament in about 3 decades and may have one section final game accomplishment in the past 30 years, I would say he done as expected. They haven't overachieved but I think they have made some positive strides.

The color of the sky above Shoreview and North Oaks is a different color to some of those parents than it is to the rest of us. Moundsviews drought may be one of the more embarrasing ones in Minnesota history considering their economic status and numbers. Maybe that is why the parents can be such bleeps. Seems like the have and the have nots don't get along over their. I would think more than ever that a kid would want to go to Totino Grace or Hill-Murray before entering into M.V.'s web of failure.

Re: shloppy
Yes I am friends with Nick, and if you want to debate coaching technique I guess I'm the wrong person to ask, since "I never played the game". What I DO know is that high school coaches have no protection from what happened to Nick and that is a shame. What I also know in 16 years of broadcasting and knowing the Mounds View situation very well is his 5 years for the Mustangs rate as a significant step up from any coach they have had in the past twenty.

re: shloppy
it appears you were not one of nitti's favorite. people here are upset about how nitti has been treated. every coach has his own philosophy on coaching and that is his right. to have parents dicate how a game should be play is not right, that is why you have a coach. if you (or your parents) do not like his style -- transfer. try to find a coach that fits your style of play, not getting coaches fired behind his back. the holy angels coach does not have the same style as jefferson, or apple valley and you do not see the AD firing them because parents complain.

Re: Comparing MV wtih AHA?
I certainly don't claim to know coaching styles and what works/what doesn't, but I don't think a comparison between Mounds View and Holy Angels, Apple Valley or Jefferson really helps the Nitti argument. The last 3 schools mentioned have pretty successful hockey programs. From what I understand, Mounds View does not. Not to say that complaints aren't lodged in the "successful" programs, but we don't hear about them until things begin going south.

Re: Comparing MV wtih AHA?
puck-- you are right comparing mv to aha. i was just trying to say they have a different style of play and yet successful. those schools also have some very good players, but they still need to play the style the coaches dicate, not the other way around. how long does it take to make a successful program under one coach? i do not know.

Nitti to WB
Look for Nick Nitti, 36, whose boys hockey coaching contract after five years at alma mater Mounds View was not renewed amid a hot, still-active controversy involving supporters and non-supporters, to be hired by White Bear Lake as a hockey-football assistant.

-Tuesday's Pioneer Press, Shooter's column

<a href="http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincitie ...
