Mounds View is likely looking for a new coach
Re: Mounds View is likely looking for a new coach
My employer had to fire one of my co-workers a few weeks ago due to some inappropriate behavior and other issues. Were we supposed to hold a public meeting before letting him go and explain every reason and incident? I don't think so, so why is everyone so hot and bothered about this?

I do not know Nitti, nor anybody at MV, and have no ties what so ever to that community. I don't think I've ever been there. If Nitti feels he has been wronged in his being let go or not having his contract renewed, then he can take legal actions to get his job back.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... Kodiak, looks like your urging is bringing some people out from the confines of "readers" to "participants".....good. We all want information from those who have experienced EITHER side of this ongoing story.

i am a new poster to this stuff - couldnt take time to read 'em all - will later, maybe - dont know if i even want to come back to this subject - gotta be more to this mess than meets the eye - dont know whos right or whos wrong at this point - most of the posters are using tongue sharpeners, not skate sharpeners - see ya

Re: Sex Wax
Sex Wax: You may want to check your "understanding" there kiddo... "B. Stevens" does not have a girlfriend with a son, or for that matter - a girlfriend AT ALL, because he is MARRIED. And whether or not he has a son in the MVYHA has no bearing on his opinion on how the school board of the district in which he lives conducts its business. He is a member of the Mounds View community and I can pretty much guarantee that he knows more about hockey than "hockey parents" do. So before you go denouncing the opinion of a well-respected figure in the MN hockey community, you may want to get your facts straight.

nitti
why can't people understand that nitti wasn't a good coach.....it not that hard.....finding a better coach than nitti wont take very long....for example the jv coach at mv.....ill i hear is how great he was for the program....he did keep things clean on and off the ice.....but anyone can come in and do that to a team.....just takes some commitment.....to win games though is another story......nitti doesn't coach a winning game....he plays favorites with people that shouldn't even be on the jv team!! he also cut people this year that could have made an impact on the team....an example for people in the MV know......he cut bret deuschane (spelling?) and kept joe cox....if you know these players you will know that joe cox has heart but cant pass, skate, or shoot even with a 3rd line jv'er yet he was kept around in place of a player like bret deuschane, who i know from first hand experience is talented, and skilled....nitti cut him for god know what reasons over cox....it crazy in nittis world of bs....

and for him being a good guy.....my friend had 6 points taken from him his junior year and those points were given to justin or kent bostrom on the spot....my friend kept his mouth shut till nitti stopped playing him, then when he confronted nitti about it nitti denied taking the points....hes padding stats for his FAVORITES....the bostroms are great hockey players they didn't need that.....

Re: SB24
Whether the firing of Nitti was justified or not,, the whole things makes Moundsview look silly and out of control. Why should parents and or school board have any say in who's the coach, that should be left to the Superintendant and the AD, that's why they're there. Maybe my civics class is outdated but it seems that there's no seperation of power there. Parents always think they're right, the day Johnny graduates they could care less though. The AD has to think long term. I guess I'm lucky to be in a district where the AD runs the show, parents can complain all they want and believe me they do, but the AD sticks up for his coaches and the Schoolboard defers complaints to the AD. In the past few years I've seen both worlds, Rochester is run one way, Lourdes by the parents. Both are successful, but Lourdes athletics look out of control.

By the time a kid is in high school he either is a good hockey player or not, no high school coach can change that, put Trebil in Winona and I guarentee he won't win a state AA title. Putting the 5 best players in the state on the same team is no guarentee a title will follow, ask Moorhead or even the New York Rangers.

Nitti
This whole thing has taken on a life of its own. Schloppy, you need to jump behind the bench for awhile to get a true perspective on this. Opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one. This is particularly true when it comes to measuring ability in athletics. When I played this game, I questioned to myself why some guys played and some guys did not all the way through college. Now that I have coached sports at the varsity level for twelve years, I understand why coaches make the decisions they do even though they might not make sense to the players. This is where the MV mentality fails. It is not up to you who makes the team, that is the coaches responsibility.

Nick is not totally without blame in all of this. However, the way it was handled and the double standard that exists with MV coaches is ridiculous. Do you think Ziggy Kauls is shown the door for these things? No way! He has survived things worse than this. Just ask any of the basketball people about his freshmen coach.

Nick took the MV program from nearly laughable in the Hoiland era, to respectable and a team capable of competing every night in the SEC. Could they stay with Roseville or WBL every time? Nope, but that takes time and commitment from everyone players, coaches and parents. This constant in-fighting has done nothing but know the MV program back a few steps on its way to try and get to the top.

My words of wisdom for those who wanted Nitti out "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it"

What i'd like to see...
Just once, when parents run all over a coach and ad, I'd like to see an entire school's athletic staff resign because of a situation like this. Imagine the message if the legendary Ziggy Kauls would tender his resignation because of the way the Mounds View's administration and school board treated a colleague. That would surely send a message.

Quote:
Reggie - I don't think the "GOV" vetoed that bill that you referred to some time ago. I hope this link works... this is the bill's "History" as it worked it's way through the legislature. It shows a Governor's veto on 5/16/05. I did a quick search and did not find any other similar bills introduced last session.

HF0068 History

Interesting side note, one of the bill's original co-authors (Rep. Tom Emmer (R)-Delano) actually voted against the bill when it came up for a vote in the House.

I also know nothing about the specifics of the MV situation but this stuff keeps repeating itself just in a different community.

We just went thru this crap up in Duluth with Randolf, didnt we? Yes, the semester I spent interning at the MN House finally paid off.

The way that I read the bill, it wouldn't have protected Nitti's job, the school board would just have to state their reasons for not renewing his contract. The reasons could have been legit or bogus, they just had to give a reason and allow him to respond. In a perfect world, they would do that BEFORE deciding whether or not to renew his contract, but it isn't required.

No, I'm not wholeheartedly taking either side. I feel that he should have been treated better and given a chance to respond to allegations made against him, but I feel coaches in general don't deserve greater protection than is available to any other 'at-will' worker. I feel that Nitti has done a good job bringing MV to a higher level of respectability on and off the ice, but the stat padding that was going on was beyond obvious (even to an outsider like me and I like the players that benefited from it) and it was irritating to me. I can respect that the job must be tough living in an affluent community that is located right about in the middle of TG, Hill & Cretin, but others on the West end of town have to deal with this as well. Schloppy talks about how good MV was as youth, but for example, losing quality players like Kaufman (Hill), Schneider (Roseville), Palmeri & Reiss (TG) out of one group of players make you at least one line and a half worse than had those players stayed.

MV Hockey
I agree with the fact that the AD and principal need to do their job, BUT they need the support of the school board too. At MV it seems that if parents don't get the right answer at the AD or principal level, they just keep going until someone validates their complaint. It is sad but true. If you want to coach you just have accept it is part of the job, just like people bitching at your wife in the stands or interupting your dinner at a restaurant to share their "expertise".

Has anyone heard anything concrete on the replacement? I have had my ear to the ground but have not heard anything.

Re: Stat padding
Reggie - I was just starting to respect you - and then the stat padding stuff - I don't see it - if any coach padded stats for his star player(s) - there would be mutiny after 2 games, both by the players and parents - and most of the coaches don't turn in the numbers anyway - and most hockey players won't take points that belong to someone else - we police ourselves - in terms of Schneider leaving for RV - MV was down - can't remember, was that just when Nick started coaching there - Schneider left for a better opportunity to be showcased - same old, same old, if your kid is just pretty good and is on the bubble for a scholarship - you send him to a better program - or a program that has a shot of being seen by a larger audience (of scouts) - "Great Players don't need the extra audience (They have already been discovered) - I don't think Mr. Nitti nor Mr. Goldsmith are of the ilk to pad statistics -

As I said before, I'm a new to these threads.

I am more than disappointed in this guy(?) SEXWAX.

If I were BSIII - I would be looking for SEXWAX in a dark alley - SEXWAX reminds me of a radio talk show host - callers don't have a chance because the host has the "Mike" and the off/on button. The old run and hide trick. I really thought that this thread might be above stuff like that - BSIII, I think most of brighter minds are behind you - guys like SEXWAX would throw their own mother to the curb -

Re: Mounds View is likely looking for a new coach
Reg - unfortunately your semester interning at the state let you down - that bill on coaches contracts came up again and passed during special session as part of a larger education funding bill (yes, the Gov had vetoed it earlier - no clue why he was amenable to it the second time around, probably wasn't something he really cared about that much). It's in HF141, article 2 if anyone cares, passed and signed into law in July and became effective August 1st. It really doesn't give a ton of protection, basically guarantees you a hearing though which is at least something.

Just wanted to clarify.

Re: Stat padding
Dusey - my point about players transfering was for those whose arguement was that they had really good youth teams that faultered at the HS level. My point was you can't expect the exact same results when you lose a bunch of good players for whatever reason.

edit - removed response to stat padding. I didn't bring it up originally and shouldn't have continued it. I don't want to continue down that road and it's not my intention to embarrass any specific players on any team, . It happens WAY more than the general public thinks, I'll leave it at that.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... lap>Reggie Dunlap at: 8/16/05 2:41 pm

Raider hockey - you are right, my mistake.

Like I said, I just did a quick search, the original was under the "Athletics" search and I didn't see anything under 'Athletics' or 'Education' for the Special Session. The bill that was passed was buried as an amendment in the Omnibus Education bill.

Thanks for clarifying!

Re: Stat padding
Reggie is accurate that stat padding occurs and that it occurs way more than the general public knows. I have no idea if Nitti did this or not because I don't know the MV situation.

Dusey, to say that there would be mutiny by players and parents in a program that would do this....well that would be great, but no, that doesn't happen. I agree with you in that I would like to believe that most programs and most coaches prefer to go by real statistics. There are others, however, whether it is because of their inexperience or their own desire to achieve success through an athlete, whose morals are not so high. Sometimes they also get caught up in trying to help a kid get the "edge" to get looked at by scouts and/or schools. Whatever the reasons, they are never good enough to cheat on anyone's stats. Perhaps a solution would be to require stats be reported, rather than it being an option.

Reggie and Puckhead - you guys are alright - I think we're on the right track here. I'd serve on any hockey association board with you two.

Sorry if I offended anybody, just trying to clarify my thoughts.

I think this thread can be educational to many. Dusey - I know you meant that Mr. Nitti's contract was simply not renewed - not "canned". There's not a whole lot of differnce in the pay stub though.

I surmise that there is still a lot of turmoil surrounding this non-renewal issue. How long before this simmers down?
Will his supporters lose some momentum?

I guess if it's more than the Nitti issue (School Board & Admin wasn't exactly above board), the people will continue to argue on principle. Little bit like "Miranda", Roe Vs Wade, NRA, etc.

NITTI
Heard from a pretty good source that the AD, Principal and Superintendent are in plenty of hot water for their handling of this. I guess mistakes were made all across the board. Pressure is being applied to hold them accountable for this. Sexwax your post was a joke right? No seriously it was a joke right? I'm sure they'll have the new Coach over there check with you to make sure you're ok with how he determines what the best way to use ice time is for HIS team is. Sounds like a good idea to have the parents be involved in this. Maybe you could draw up the practice plans and pre game warm ups too? Shloppy I had you pegged as an ankle skater from your first post- admit it I'm dead right aren't I?
