Andrew Kerr

Post by karl(east) »

Andrew Kerr, the former Duluth East defenseman most of you will probably remember for his big hits on Kyle Rau in the 2011 state championship game, suffered a brutal injury in a freak accident this past weekend. I'll share any updates here as they become public.

From today's Dubuque Telegraph Herald:

Andrew Kerr never hesitated to lend a hand to the various community outreach programs supported by the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

Now, the defenseman whose off-ice work made him a finalist for the USHL’s prestigious Curt Hammer Award could use a big assist from the same community he embraced so heartily the past two seasons.

Kerr, 21, broke a bone in his neck Saturday evening in a swimming accident on Island Lake near his home in Duluth, Minn. He underwent surgery Sunday and is in stable condition in the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, according to his family.

“He’s recovering well from the surgery (Sunday). He’s woken up a few times and recognized family and friends, so that’s really good news,” a Kerr family spokesperson said Monday afternoon. “Right now, we really don’t know the long-term prognosis. We’re just focused on the doctors telling us, ‘This is the next step, this is the next step, this is the next step.’

“But he’s where he needs to be and he’s been getting great medical care so far. Things are positive right now, but there’s not a lot of information. We’re just looking to get to the next step. He’s a great kid, and he’s fighting.”

Oh no. CEC community sending all the best to the Kerr family. Oh yes, I couldn't take my eyes off Andrew as he laid the big hits like over and over on Kylee in the state championship. Much respect here and hoping for the best.

Horrible accident...... remember, a broken bone in the neck is TOTALLY different than a severed spinal chord........
