White Bear Lake and Duluth East is on http://TheHornWBL.com tonight and Karl will be an intermission guest if he shows up and is brave enough to handle the tough questions we're gonna throw at him.

Tonka and GR after one was tied at 0

Not a lot of flow so far, real sloppy. Both teams had their best scoring chance probably within the first 15 seconds of the game, after that, it has not been quite as exciting.

Tonka had 1 penalty, GR had 2, though how the one on Mcglouglin didn't produce a penalty for Tonka also is quite impressive.

GR has to get better at breaking the puck out, a few times some of their D have just thrown it up the middle for turnovers.

Tonka looks to have a lot of small, young kids on the team this year.

1-0 GR early in the 2nd McLaughlin with a snipe off the crossbar and in from a tight angle to take the lead.

GR having a much better period so far

1-1 tonka scores. Holum had the puck between his legs but came out aggressively for the save and got turned around which then caused him to lose the puck. Loheit had an open net to put the lose puxk away

2-1 Tonka after 2. Shots are 21-17 for GR.

Better pace and play that period, but still pretty sloppy, passing has been poor for both teams, just seems like everyone is trying to get rid of the puck before something opens up.

Early part of the period GR was in control, which was when Mclaughlin had his goal, came in on the left wing side, shot over the goalies shoulder as he went down. Tight angle, great shot, he has probably been GR's best player tonight, though he had another chance where he had everyone but the goalie beat and got too fancy and just went behind the net before trying to pass it over the net.

Tonka was really standing around at the start of the period and then towards the middle they started to work hard and they got a grinder goal by Loheit. Holum had it and got spun around, lost track of the puck and found himself outside the net. Loheit picked up the puck and did like a wrap around move around holum's back (cause Holum was facing the wrong way) and put the puck into an open net.

The last goal came with maybe a minute or two left, Van Sant caught a cross ice pass that was meant for someone else, but found it;s way to him. He was on the right wing side, defender went to block shot, he passed to Andes alone in the slot for a goal that I believe was 5 hole.

GR dominated the start of that period, while the middle and end was more in favor of Tonka, but slightly I would say, not as wide of a margin as GR had at the start of the period.

GR has their 3 big guns on the top line, after that, their second line is okay, I think #16 Stefen has played well, but his linemates aren't quite up to par. Rapids is really struggling in their own zone I think, even with their top line. Breakout has not been great.

I'll probably have to leave my house for something right after the game ends, so I won't be able to write up my thoughts for the game, at least until much later, if that even warrants it at that point.

Hain scores 25 seconds in to make it 2-2

Tonka with a bad breakout causes a turnover, puck goes back into zone, finds it way to Hain in the slot for a snapper

11 seconds into OT, tonka D makes a mistake at his own blue line, Hain poke checks it from him, goes in alone shots it high Over the blocker

3-2 final for GR I believe the shots were 33-27 in their favor too

White Bear Lake 1, Duluth East 0, Final.

East came out rolling in the first period, took a penalty, killed it, and then gave up the goal shortly thereafter. They were largely in control for most of this one, though WBL's top line did enough to keep them honest and the Bears mucked things up pretty well. Very impressive night for Bob Parenteau in goal. Shots were in the neighborhood of 28-18 East, and the Hounds missed the net a lot.

East looked like a team in experimental mode, rolling 4 lines and 6 D. Randolph pulled a Randolph and started a sophomore in net, who looked fine; he couldn't do much on the lone goal. Ian Mageau was out hurt--hopefully back next weekend--which seemed to foul up the lines. Both units had some nice looks on the power play, but no dice, and they seemed to get frustrated as things went along, with a lot of unforced errors. Obviously not a happy way to start the season, and Wayzata tomorrow could be rough, but no glaring causes for concern, either. The young D looked pretty good and the zone time was fine, but this team is thin enough in scoring talent that it needs Mageau to click, and they also need to work to get Worth some better shooting angles.

WBL isn't going to blow anyone away this year (well, other than Forest Lake), but with Parenteau and a decent top line and team D, they could cause a few teams some trouble as things go along. They're well-built to be pesky.

I thought 5 on 5 the teams were pretty evenly matched, most of Easts 28 shots came on power plays, as WBL took to many penalties. (A little home cooking by the refs helped, expecially the last one with 45 seconds left.) Overall, pretty good game. WBL was missing one of their better offensive players also.
