Edina Classic
Have been attending the classic for years but am really looking forward to the games this year. Participating teams are like 16-1. My club is due for a win over Edina or EP at some point in my tenure you would think.

Yes, I need a schedule. Looks like an incredible group of teams this year.kniven wrote:Is there a website out there dedicated to this tournament?elliott70 wrote:Go ER!alcloseshaver wrote:Have been attending the classic for years but am really looking forward to the games this year. Edina Holiday Classic...better buckle up, folks!
4 of the teams competing are top 6 ranked in state!
EP -1, GR - 3, ER - 4 and Edina - 6...hard to beat.
EP is loaded and balanced. CM picking his spots, really distributing puck early this season...feels like he's waiting to unleash the heaters.
GR balanced and fun to watch...so well coached. Klatt back is the key...
ER same...Each year their better than the last. Perbix is no joke.
Edina lost a lot with departures/grads but Sammy Walker and Ben Brinkman are not to be missed. Both are underclassman. Not to mention nearly 1/2 the team are 10th graders...seem to be a bigger, tougher team than last 2 years.
If you enjoy hockey you will NOT find a better tourney than the Edina Classic.

Based on their results over the weekend, they don't appear to be very balanced - lots of scoring from a very high-end top line. Need to find a stronger 2nd line from the rest.CakeScout17 wrote: GR balanced and fun to watch...so well coached. Klatt back is the key...

GR has scored 31 goals this year and 21 of them have been scored by the 1st line. While it's always nice to have scoring throughout the lineup, I'm not sure having a line as talented as those guys scoring 2/3 of the goals is really not that far from acceptable.TheMayor wrote:Based on their results over the weekend, they don't appear to be very balanced - lots of scoring from a very high-end top line. I'm guessing though. Not sure what the ratio for team scoring by line is the norm. I would think it is typically heavy on the 1st line.
Not arguing- just thinking out loud.

Out of curiosity, I just looked through the box scores...they may not be scoring all the goals, and at least one of the big three has had a hand in all but 4 of their goals. All 4 of those came in the blowout over Virginia. Stampohar has a bunch of points, as you'd expect, and his D partner, Heitkamp, is also piling up the assists. No one else has more than 3 points.grindiangrad-80 wrote:GR has scored 31 goals this year and 21 of them have been scored by the 1st line. That's pretty lopsided, especially for AA. It happens, though...Roseau a couple years back with Strand and Yon got to state and nearly beat Lakeville North, though that 8AA was not as good as this 7AA. And we could talk about a team like Greenway in the Sertich/Guyer years. Blaine was much the same way last year and stayed top 5 most of the season, though of course that didn't exactly work out in the end. Rapids already has something on those teams in that they have 3 elite forwards, not 2.
As I said in the rankings, this week is the best possible test for their current approach. They might just have enough talent on that top line that they can't be stopped, and if the others can at least hold their own, there's a winning formula there. But if they lose to anyone other than Eden Prairie in this tournament, they may want to at least toy with spreading the love around a little more.

I wasn't thinking about the fact the defensemen have accounted for some of the extra goals. I imagine the 1st line was on the ice for most of those as well.karl(east) wrote:Out of curiosity, I just looked through the box scores...they may not be scoring all the goals, and at least one of the big three has had a hand in all but 4 of their goals. Hopefully they can keep up the pace. I'm sure there is a plan or two in the works to try and stop that.

Percentage-wise they can strike a better balance if the top line scores less.grindiangrad-80 wrote:GR has scored 31 goals this year and 21 of them have been scored by the 1st line.

And another will be how they handle the inevitable rough patches in the season.elliott70 wrote:And, of course, the BIG measuring stick is winning.grindiangrad-80 wrote:GR has scored 31 goals this year and 21 of them have been scored by the 1st line. Another comparable team to the current Rapids team would be the Hastings club that met up with mighty East in the '98 Quarters. Taffe, Welch, and Tharp gave East fits, before the Hounds machine-like depth took over. Taffe and Welch were undeniably as dynamic as any of the Rapids trio, and Tharp was at least equal to Stampohar. One line can work a lot of damage. Thursday thru Saturday will be fun.karl(east) wrote:Out of curiosity, I just looked through the box scores...they may not be scoring all the goals, and at least one of the big three has had a hand in all but 4 of their goals.
