Hermantown-Rapids was probably the most entertaining game I've seen this year. In the first period, the Hawks' passing and puck control was as good as anything I've seen in a while, but Stejskal withstood the barrage and Rapids managed to pop one and hang in there. Hermantown's top line (Sandelin-Jacques-Herter/Kolquist...they rotated that wing some) basically contained the Rapids top line.
The chess match really got going in the 2nd. Klatt momentarily broke up his big line, but threw them back together when he could get them out there against a Hermantown lower line. It was effective, but Plante caught on quickly and line-matched from there on out. On the one instance the refs didn't let him make a late change, Rapids got its second goal. Fun back-and-forth battle, and while the Rapids top line slowly gained steam as Hermantown's wore down--the Rapids kids are probably a lot more used to the big minutes they got--Hermantown's advantage in the battle of the 2nd lines more than neutralized that. Judnick's goal wound up being the game winner there.
Rapids threw everything they had at the Hawks in the last few minutes, but Hermantown did just enough to hang on. I'll say this about Rapids, it's not terribly hard to get under their skin. There were a couple avoidable penalties in this one (a certain player was a common theme), and with a big section game looming on Thursday, getting in that fight at the end was...not wise. They only played 4 D tonight, and if two of them are out against East...well, we're going to see an awful lot of Stampohar.
After watching Plante out-maneuver Klatt thanks to that last line change (despite Klatt's best efforts), I'd say getting the highest seed possible is important for Rapids in the playoffs. If they can get that top line some good matchups, they're in so much better shape than if an opponent can match a strong top line to at least make things somewhat even. (That said, who knows how many teams have a line that can do that.)
Thursday will be interesting, as neither East nor Rapids really come in playing their best hockey of the year. Both have a lot to gain from a win.
