Warroad

It was said fairly often before last season started that it wouldn't matter who was coaching warroad, the kids would win it all anyway. they proved that because hasbargen and fermoyle are by no means coaches. if eades would've still been there they wouldn't have had those two ties. anyway, they won't be back next year. it will be interesting to see who they can lure in.

St. Paul Academy head job is open.

It's really been pretty quiet on the coaching front so far this spring. Not much turnover.

I see that you didn't pick up on the sarcasm, what I meant by this was that the arena board wasn't happy with an undefeated season by the current coaches so they need to find someone better suited for the job.

I wonder if they have ever heard of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

It ain't broke, but they will break it. Last year's coaches are history. Word is someone who was in the system wants to come back, but it's not Eades. We'll see what the hockey powers pull off.

Funny thing is though that it isn't the hockey powers that hire the hockey coach, it's the school board. Even though Conway and his group of yes men like to think they are in control they don't have the final say.

I would have to respectfully disagree. The School Board "rubber stamps" the choice of the powers that be! As to people in the system, that doesn't leave many options; and those that are left have no interest in returning.

After Eades left, rumor was that they were pursuing a Junior level coach, similar to when Cary was brought in. Did not have sufficient time to pursue that option, and let Fermoyle and Hasbargen have the reigns. How you even attempt to replace a coaching staff that led the team to a State Title is beyond me, but if it's going to be done, Warroad's the place.

Yes, the team was excellent, but give some credit where it is due. Coaches always have a role. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Well put Puckguy, they did have a great team but I also agree that the coaches played a role and as we can see they are very capable of the job. I think the two in place right now are a great combination and unless they do bring someone in that has outstanding credentials it would be a shame to see them go.

important quality for coaches

Post by hockeydad »

I've always felt one of the most important things a coach who has talent on the team needs to do is not screw up the talent you've got. By that standard, I'd say the coaches at Warroad did the job last year.

Couple changes coming in the ol' IRC for next season. As you know GHS is shopping for a new head coach and has posted in the papers for that position. Some say ex NHL'er Peluso has thrown his hat in the ringer, who knows if that is 100% certain or not only time will tell. As well rumor around the mill is that GR is making some changes to the coaching staff as well, supposedly a change to the assistant positions is forthcoming. I hope both clubs land some good coaches to help the boys out in 2005-2006.

Warroad11,
"If they Don't Improve". What kind of comment is that. They made the Final 4 and they probably were as good as in team in the country their last 15 or 16 Games. Hey I like Eades also and he will get a head job but don't pound on the current head coach.

Two questions, I saw in the paper that Coach O'Neill was hired at Cretin. Is he replacing Toomey? What happened to Coach Smith at SPA? I thought the players really liked him. I can't believe the parents had high expectations considering their circumstances.

ONeil is taking over for Toomey who left because of his job (reported by shooter) My question is wasn`t Oneil the coach before Toomey ? If so, Anyone know why Oneil took the job back or why they didn`t open it up ?

O'neill coached the varsity with Vanelli and Toomey coached JV. Vanelli left for STA.

When Vanelli left, Toomey coached varsity and O'neill coached JV. Now, Toomey leaves and O'neill will coach the varsity.

I think thats right.

I don't think Coach Smith wanted to coach at SPA anymore. Why? I don't know. Probably sick of getting smoked by Breck and Blake, plus it's tough for students to get into that school, succeed, and pay tuition, hockey player or not. Tough to be competitive in any sport, and the coaches have to work very hard.

At Cretin... I think they'll only be better with coach O'Neil. He's an alum, he's in the school, and he's a great coach... both baseball and hockey!

Hockeybutt, UR welcome.

Also, I agree with Kodiak. I think the reason it wasnt opened up.....and this is just a guess...is because they have had a "revolving door" at the position in recent years and they want the stability that Oneill will bring (also, he is and will be a fine coach).

Oneill is good guy, a loyal Cretin guy, and an employee. He isnt about to leave for St Thomas Academy or another job any time soon.

For whatever reason Warroad has posted the boy's hockey coaching position. Applications are due by the end of the week.

Either they are just going through a formal process, or something is afoot. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Believe it or not it's the Boy's position and yes TRFan incredible as it seems some people are never satisfied. The pressure for this is coming from the Warroad Arena board specifically Mike Marvin and his back pocket boys - Brian Johnston and Brian Erickson. The board is actually very divided on this issue. The problem comes from Albert being the Arena Manager thus they believe they can impose their will on this even though he is technically a City Employee when running the rink and is a HS employee when coaching. I know the three people on the search commitee and unlike SB24 said earlier it WON'T be a rubber stamp for the so-called hockey gods AND I believe they are good coaches - don't they get a chance to prove that? Anyone with any type of Mike or David Marvin connection have NO prayer, I've been told that by one of the committee members. An Arena Board member and the Youth Hockey Board President have been asked to sit in on the interview(s) and give feedback if there is any interviews with the actual "search" committee but they have no real say in the decision this is being done to placate the dissenting Arena Board members. Here's what I don't understand...Undefeated, State Title and we'll see you later bye - the excuse I got from one of the dissenters was they would have to look next year anyway because they won't let him do it if he wants to keep his Rink Manager job and the Arena Board wants more promotion of the Gardens to use for other events as it needs to bring in more dollars and they are looking for a Coach who will promote Warroad Youth Hockey - who better then the guy that's at the Rink everyday? I thought the Gardens was built for hockey not Home & Boat Shows. How about taking the ice out after 4 X 4 is complete until HS Baseball season is over; doing your Home & Boat shows in April and May put the ice back in June and have a tourney every weekend. If you do an 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93 and 94 aged tourney (that's just boys add the girls and you see where we're at) at big bucks that's 2 full months taken care of besides the icetime for the local kids during the week which doesn't have to be free in the summer months. I know there is a Hockey Board member just itching to do summer tourneys who would probably buy the icetime at the necessary cost and still come out way ahead. You'd probably have an easier time booking tourneys in the summer up here with the fishing and easier drive than winter. Plus you have a 2 week camp in mid- July. With coordination with the Youth Baseball coaches it could be done without major conflicts. Lastly, I think you'll see the status quo as there are rational people actually making the real decisions.
