Replay System

Post by twincitiespuckmind »

It's as if a kid has a new to play with. I agreed that the replay should be utilized but was confused on a review of Grand Rapids 5th goal that was reviewed. After the goal was scored a minute of play resumed and then after a stoppage of play the announcer at the Excel then went on to say that the "goal is under review". Did anyone else catch that?

I did hear that too! They were checking to see if Moorhead scored prior to the whistle being blown in that scrum in front. Guess he should have said that the play was under review, since there was no goal called on the play.

Exactly right. They reviewed the play in front of Stejskal not the Rapids goal.

If replay isn't used during the regular season or sectionals I don't see why it should be used in the finals. Even if the technology is there to do it, the games are being played under a different rule system than the one used throughout the entire season.

It's one of those questions of how much is too much, especially at the high school level. This year, offsides was added to replay situations in the state tournament, mimicking the NHL system since the technology is already in place. Delano was on the wrong end of a goal disallowed against MAML due to the play being determined as offsides on replay.

The MSHSL treats the playoffs game differently because of importance. Goal judges are added to sectional play (may have factored into Holy Family's disallowed goal against Eden Prairie in last year's sectional semifinal on a hand pass), and an additional official (linesman) is used for the state tourney.

It stemmed from the blown high stick call that incorrectly negated a Moorhead goal in the 2005 championship game vs Holy Angels. The goal would have resulted in a tied game, instead of a one goal Holy Angels win.

The difference between the Tourney and the regular games you are describing is the instant review technology is present for the tourney. Get the calls right. There's too much at stake not to.

Totally disagree: if the technology is there, use it. Getting the call right is the most important thing.

Just look at the A Championship. Hermantown ended up winning anyway, but it was a good thing we had replay so they over-turn what initially looked like the game winner.

Well, I guess I am a traditionalist and I don't like replay on any level in any sport, high school to pros. Mistakes are a part of the game, including officials making mistakes.

I've never understood the logic behind......."we could get it right.......but let's get it wrong and cost a group of kids a state championship they've worked their entire lives for Because it's part of the game and so I can get home three minutes sooner"

Dial phones used to be part of life too. I haven't seen one of those in a while.
