True but you never know who will decide that a private school education is the way to go. With as screwed up as the school system in Duluth is I have a feeling that there are kids who would get out of it if they could. The surrounding schools must be about full or full with transfers so DM might become a hotter item.Jeffy95 wrote:They should have a decent team this year. Then I think they go back to mediocre for the next several years. They just won't ever have enough depth to compete.

The bigger issue is the whole transfer rule. From what I heard East cut 16 kids this year and have 41 for V and JV. Yet you have Duluth Denfeld that doesn't even have a JV team this year because numbers are so low. I also heard Hermantown was going to cut around 15. Marshall only had 37 kids this year and they kept everyone.
The High School League needs to figure this out as good kids now aren't playing hockey. We all know Marshall isn't in the cards for most due to the cost of the school, but Denfeld or even Proctor could have used some of these kids. Proctor pulled up 5 Bantams to make their JV team this year and now only have 1 Bantam B team.

A lot of the kids on the west side of Duluth have already left. Hockey players go to Hermantown, everyone else to Proctor or Esko. Marshall will always get the same number of kids. There just aren't enough Parents that are going to buy into sending their kids there for the myth that they're getting a better Education.Wet Paint wrote:True but you never know who will decide that a private school education is the way to go. I agree with you. If those cuts are for real then I think that Duluth Jr Gold could have a program this year which would be nice.Duluth_Topper wrote:The bigger issue is the whole transfer rule. That would be great to see. How many Jr. Gold programs are left in the State? You would think Duluth and Hermantown could each have a team or two. Hermantown has 63 PeeWees this year. If you're not on the AA team, you're not playing High School Hockey. I wonder how many parents even realize that?Wet Paint wrote:I agree with you. Jeffy95 - as someone that had there kid in one of the schools just last year you mentioned I do have to disagree. Having a classroom with 10-12 vs. 30 plus is a huge improvement. Having an average ACT score that is almost 6 points above the MN average also says a lot.
Also I know from talking to several other parents of various schools that "vaping" seems to be a real issue right now. Why we asked my son if that happens in Marshall he laughed at us and said no one does it.
Sounded like a few kids were looking at Denfeld, but with no JV team this what are even their options?

If vaping was the only thing to worry about in some of those schools it would be great. I have heard what you can buy and sell in the hallways of a couple of them and vape supplies was not on the list. The biggest issue that I can see is the cost of DM. Have to confess to not knowing what that is so it might not be as steep as I imagine it is.Duluth_Topper wrote:Jeffy95 - as someone that had there kid in one of the schools just last year you mentioned I do have to disagree. I think choice is a great thing and parents should choose what is best for their kids. I'm sure Marshall is a great school, but don't recycle the same talking points that have been disproven over and over.Duluth_Topper wrote:Jeffy95 - as someone that had there kid in one of the schools just last year you mentioned I do have to disagree. Of course the Average ACT scores are higher there. Have you ever heard of Demographics? Public schools have to take every kid. How many kids are in a grade at Marshall, 50? Take the top 50 ACT scores at East and guess what happens to that 6 points? Do some actual research and you will see that Private vs. Public school makes very little difference in Academic outcome. You can start here:

I don't know anything about the "vaping" thing but if a kid can't make his own choices then I don't think it matters what school he goes to.

From their website, it is $18,450 a year for grades 7-12. Some financial aid is available, based on need.Wet Paint wrote:If vaping was the only thing to worry about in some of those schools it would be great. Lee yes there is sticker shock for sure. But what most don't know is there is a ton of financial aid available. We were very skeptical at first about the idea of paying for school when they can go for free to public school.
All I can say is actually go on a tour and than tell me if you have the same impression of what everyone thinks of Marshall after that.
Heck I graduated from H-Town and thought is was silly that people would ever pay for high school back in the day.
And having the rink across the parking lot from the school is a huge bonus.

I have three kids at Marshall, easily the best academic choice for us. Public school was not working. Before you jump in with comments about how it is probably easier for me to afford this choice, I will stop you right now. I am working two jobs to make this work. It is a sacrifice, but it is worth it.....to my family. It is not necessarily the right choice for everyone.
That being said, I had one kid playing for the Toppers, but an injury ended his playing days before he could get on the Varsity squad. Another hopes he gets the chance when he is of age. We did not make our choice to send our kids to Marshall for hockey. It is purely academic, and it is only a plus that hockey is a part of the program.
