Top AA 15 - Strength of Schedule

Post by WestMetro »

Karl/Lee

Have you done any analysis as to how you’d rank the top 15 teams in terms of SOS this season?

Once I started, the data was easier to pluck than I thought. Keep in mind that this is based on schedules posted to The Hub as of last Thursday. Games against non-Minnesota opponents are not considered.

Top 15

1. Edina (20.19)
2. Wayzata (20.05)
3. Eden Prairie (19.92)
4. Minnetonka (19.64)
5. Moorhead (19.64)
6. Duluth East (19.56)
7. Grand Rapids (19.21)
8. Prior Lake (18.92)
9. Blaine (18.89)
10. Lakeville North (18.86)
11. Lakeville South (18.86)
12. Benilde-St Margaret's (18.76)
13. Maple Grove (18.66)
14. Holy Family (18.60)
15. Hill-Murray (18.58 )

Numbers, of course, are based on teams' final PageStat ratings at the end of the 2016-17 season.

I don't do anything formal, but my guess would've lined up with Lee's almost exactly: first the Lake teams, then the top northern teams with little to no conference scheduling constraints, then teams from big AA metro conferences with good nonconference schedules, then the teams in weaker metro conferences (mostly privates) with strong nonconference schedules.

There was a point in time in which I did try to do this preseason, but I've stopped doing that because I found that it all just ended up being wrong when I was wrong about how good certain teams were going to be. If you're going to start assigning numbers to SOS, you need some real results in hand to base it on.

Not surprised at Edina being first in SOS

I only count seven teams on their schedule that are not within Karl’s top 15

WBL by contrast, which is a lower top 10 team, has 18 or 19 opponents who are not within the top 15

Strength of schedule should not determine anything because in 2aa it is a fact that Eden Prairie and Minnetonka chose to not schedule Holy Family. Not the Fire's fault that 2 Lake teams don't want to play HF. MSHSL needs to demand that section teams play each other at least once during the year.

Although, 6 of 9 non conference games are against Karl's to 15 rankings (Cloq, DE, HM, Edina, Cent, and Blaine), and the other 3 aren't far after that (BJ, Hibb, GR). I guess the SEC just doesn't measure up well on the SOS.

Insert another S in place of the E. SSC sure ain't what it used to be. Advantage Lake conference and schools that don't let conference nonsense get in the way of scheduling who you want to play to best prepare a team for March like Coach Randolph. MSHSL remains a mess not just in hockey.

I have East playing 10 games against Karl's Top 15.
And 9 more that are on the Hon Mention list.
Add in Rapids there and that makes a competitive schedule.

And just because I like to take a dig at Hermantown when warranted.
I have 5 games against Top 15.
One vs. Hon Mention.
2 v. Rapids
You could say based on history, Thief River Falls, St. Cloud Cathedral and Greenway may be decent A games.
It's so baffling, my mind has frozen.

Time will tell but Rapids lost a lot....holding them up as a standard maybe a bit premature....

Southwest and John Marshall were great once :!:

Tezer- agree, I had looked at Hounds , and schedule is formidable , Lee already had them way up on his list

Lee- Centennial also plays a lot of top 15 teams , Historical SOS algorithm may not be indicative for them this year?

Centennial is 20th. Hurting their SOS is games against Irondale, Coon Rapids and Spring Lake Park, all with a PageStat under 15.75 last season.
