Tough Weekend for 8A

Post by greenwayraider »

Section 8A teams had a record of 1-6-1 this past weekend.

Crookston lost to Johnson, beat Tartan
Thief River Falls lost to Cathedral, tied Tartan
Warroad lost to Rapids, Virginia
Red Lake Falls lost to Morris/Benson
EGF lost to Greenway

Warroad is a real mytery to me. The last 3-4 years their bantam teams have gone to state and were very competitive. I thought that would start to pay off this season. Lot of the season is left so they could very well turn it around but at this point in time they are 0-6.

I watched Warroad play Grand Rapids this weekend and was surprised at how much they dominated play. I know Grand Rapids has struggled early this year so I can't say if it was Warroad playing strong, or GR being down that much. Final shots were around 45-10 in Warroad's favor.

The GR goalie came up with some huge stops which was the difference maker, but Warroad clearly controlled play for much of the game. If they can keep up that intensity going forward and start finding the back of the net, they should be able to compete most nights.

In my opinion their defense is what may end up holding them back. I'll give the goalie a break because he went long stretches without seeing a shot, followed by a high quality opportunity. Not an easy scenario for him to get any kind of rhythm going. Still, they are not as strong defensively as they were a few years ago, and I do not see them stealing many games that way.
