Shots on goal or winning the game

Post by kniven »

If your team is in the state championship game, would you rather outshoot your opponent by 35 shots or win the big game?

I would much rather out shoot the opponent! Who cares about winning the state tournament?

Cmon, Knivsy. The name of the champion goes on the trophy and in the record books. Nobody, except the losing club, remembers that they outshot the state champs. Hell, even FSN North failed to mention the controversial non-goal call by East when they did the feature on the classic 5 OT thriller from '96.

I get a kick out of fans that post on twitter or elsewhere that we lost but we outshot them! Blah, blah, blah. CEC got their asses kicked by Superior.....who recently beat Proctor 1-0. Cloquet still has a long way to go, but the season is young. Outshot by 45 against East but ended in a tie game.

I totally agree mnmouth. But there are many fans out there who think.....”we’ll we lost the game, but we outshot them by 50”.

What does this have to do with Cloquet?

Of course. Shots are a proxy for whether or not a team could get out of their own end and apply pressure. It is possible to win a game now and then when outshot badly, but hardly a recipe for success to win long term against good teams.

The Top 10 teams entering Section play will not routinely get outshot. Their task in the postseason is making sure they don't lose a game to a team that needs a magical night to pull the upset.

You win as a team and loose as a team. Isn’t that what we tell the kids. Quality scoring chances vs. random shots towards the net. Is it the goalies job only to win the game or the entire teams. You loose a game but your SOG advantage was 40 in the game? That’s a big team problem not a goalie problem.

O-townClown‘s logic and explanation are excellent. At its core, hockey can be a very random game with weird puck bounces, variable goalie play, penalties, and odd-man rushes. In a single game situation, a team can dominate play completely, yet still lose due to random factors. But throughout a full season, this randomness should even out, and teams that consistently outshoot their opponents by a wide margin should win more often than not.

Sure, quality scoring chances and other metrics like Corsi may be better stats in many respects, but we don’t really have this information at the high school level. So shot differential is typically the best proxy we have for estimating game flow.

I will be making the trek over to Duluth for semi final Saturday. Could be the best one ever. My team probably wont be in it but it should be a memorable day.
