That Eden Prairie/Armstrong playoff game from 2011-12 was one of the bigger upsets I've witnessed in-person live in recent memory. It was a 2 vs 7 matchup. At the final buzzer, the Eden Prairie section in the stands just sat there and didn't move as they stared at the ice in shock watching Armstrong celebrate. Pretty surreal moment.

I've never been in the arena for a 2-7 or 3-6 upset. However, back in 2003 #4 Grand Rapids upset #1 Cloquet in the semifinals at the DECC. I think Cloquet had only lost 3 games that year and was ranked in the top 5 in the state. Alex Goligoski had 4 assists in that game. That year was another one where Rapids narrowly escaped the Forest Lake trap game winning 3-2 in OT.

I don't think I have been to a 3-6 or 2-7 either mainly because it takes a lot of dedication to one team to see them play a 7 or a 6 seed because those games have a high likelihood of running time.

What game are U attending tonight? Think I’m going to EP vs Chaska (haven’t yet seen Chaska play this year) 😉 Was originally planning on Cloquet vs DM, but need to stay in town tonight. Pulling for DM mostly because I want to see their “best” road jersey Saturday night ...and a bit due to lingering bitterness from 2008 Section final at the DECC 😉 🤬 Ops...That’s Thursday night for EP
vs Chaska 😳

Ummmm tonight will have to depend on how bad the roads are after work as I am debating going over to Elk as that is the best game closest to me. I will be in Duluth for Friday so I didn't want to drive back and forth twice in one week.

Thursday I am still torn between Blake-Wayzata and Chaska-EP.

I’ll be surprised if ER doesn’t have an easy time with FL. ER is very good in their own building, but maybe I’m underestimating FL. And while Tony’s cavalier attitude regarding the CP vs Anoka game was expected...if they somehow get by the Tornadoes (who beat CP in OT Feb 8th) playing in their HOME rink in the semifinals against Centennial...has the makings for an upset (as you indicated on the podcast) 😉

I will kick it old school with a weird year for section playoffs upsets: 1990, when #8 CDH knocked off #1 Hastings in Section 4, and #7 Willmar defeated #2 Edison in Section 5. While neither qualified as a monumental upset, nearly everyone was rooting for Edison in Dziedzic‘s senior year. (And Willmar had some decent teams back then, which may be hard to believe now.) As Tony mentioned during the podcast, seeding was often scattershot during the single class era, since the sections were huge and the teams didn’t play one another as frequently.

1993.....
#7 Albert Lea beat #2 Mayo in overtime on flyball from the far blue line that dropped over the goalies outstretched arm as he back peddled like a center fielder.
The very next game
#6 Austin beat #3 John Marshall, the 3rd period saw 2 Rockets in an on ice fist fight in the corner.....we learned it is not a penalty to fight your own team mate.

Austin ended up winning the section and actually won a game at state.

Squirt C '00 game to attend...

Post by CakeScout17 »

be cool if you went to Wayzata/Blake to provide some scouting for us in Sec 2 - as I can't make any Thurs games due to prior commitment.
Does Wyz turn it up a notch? Does Blake play spoiler?
Maybe most interesting would be a take on Aaron Frankel (and Jack Sabre) for Blake - two former Edina kids - Frankel can light it up here and there.
I also think this will be better game overall than EP/CH matchup.

 Now there's something I have yet to see. Interesting to have two of those in one season, though I'm guessing the teams were a bit closer together in talent during the Tier I years than they are now.

Back in the one-class era I wouldn't be surprised to hear these sorts of upsets were more common, just because the sections were so much deeper. But some strange seeding methods also prevented such games from ever happening in a few cases, too. For example, Section 2 had separate brackets of Duluth, St. Cloud, and 8 metro teams, and I don't think there were more than 5 or 6 teams in the Duluth/St. Cloud brackets. So, on paper, you couldn't even have a huge upset there since the seeding only went so deep. A few other sections have done things like that over the years.
