All Time All Tournament Team
Willard Ikola - Coach
Greg Stuttgart - Goalie
Ryan McDonagh - Defense
Henry Boucha - Defense
Mike Antonovich - Forward
Dave Spehar - Forward
John Mayasich - Forward
Can’t argue with any of the picks except one, in my opinion. Did McDonagh’s parents have a vote? 1 tourney and 5 total points? Can’t see him having a bigger impact than Crowley, Olimb, to name a couple.

Agree I’d say Karl Gouhring of AV over Stutzwbmd wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 8:32 pmI'm assuming you mean Stutz.gopherpuck516 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 7:19 pm Willard Ikola - Coach

Typing on my phone... yeah, Stutz. 3 straight shutouts is very impressive. Also deserving are Goehring, Casey, the guy from Mpls SW in the late 60’s/early 70’s, and probably some others.wbmd wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 8:32 pmI'm assuming you mean Stutz.gopherpuck516 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 7:19 pm Willard Ikola - Coach

Just don’t understand with all the history of the tourney, how a defenseman who played in one tourney and scored 5 points is one of the two selected as the best ever. He’s had a great post HS career, but there’s got to be more deserving defenseman who played in (and won) multiple tournaments. I’ll start with Crowley.
Re: All Time All Tournament Team
Boucha only played in one tournament, also.

McDonagh Is definitely the name that stuck out to me as well. Crowley seems to be a better fit.

Agreed.gopherpuck516 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2019 1:39 pmFair point, but Boucha is like a living folk hero in MN HS hockey.
Re: All Time All Tournament Team
Agree as well. One because he was an unbelievable HS player and two he was the face of what is generally accepted as the best team of all time.
If they wanted a career award, at least Housley played in 2 tourneys, and played so well in it as a junior that the greatest NHL coach of all time watched it and drafted him 6th overall.
I’d also have to go with Goehring. He was awesome in 1996. Stutz was great too and his name gets associated with the 3 shutouts, but that 2004 Centennial team was the best defensive TEAM I’ve ever seen in the tourney.
No complaints with the forwards.
Re: All Time All Tournament Team
....and Housley went straight from HS to the NHL and had a Hall of Fame career.
He was terrific in that 81 tournament. South St. Paul doesn’t even make it to State without him, much less finish 3rd.
I’ll take Housley and Boucha on the blue line.

So is it more than tournament play? Being a legend outside the tournament counts?gopherpuck516 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2019 1:39 pmFair point, but Boucha is like a living folk hero in MN HS hockey.
I don't get it. What McDonough did outside the tournament doesn't count, but what Boucha means outside of the tournament does count?
Not arguing for McDonough, just curious what the standard is. To me, it should just be tournament play, if it's an all tournament team.

Re: All Time All Tournament Team
Boucha’s legend was made, or at least cemented, at the state tourney. Mike Crowley, as a 3x tourney champ with tons of great games in the tourney, is more deserving than both Boucha and McDonagh, IMO.East Side Pioneer Guy wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2019 8:50 amSo is it more than tournament play? John Mayasich
Eveleth
1951
Neal Broten
Roseau
1978
Phil Housley
South St. Paul
1982
Tim Sheehy
International Falls
1966
Henry Boucha
Warroad
1969
Mike Antonovich
Greenway
1969
Hard to argue these 6 players but if you were to measure toughness
you have to add, pound for pound the toughest high school player of all time, Pete Fichuk.

Re: All Time All Tournament Team
I know there are others you could name, but since winning a title doesn't seem to be a requirement how do they leave Spehar off the list...
Plus Aaron and Butsy both had more goals than Neal in the '78 tournament. Not trying to poop on Neal he's clearly a HS legend but...

Re: All Time All Tournament Team
Aaron Broten had 178 points in 86 games over two seasons for the U of M.
Neal Broten had 142 points in 76 games over two seasons.
It is curious to me that any discussion of great Minnesota HS players or great Gophers starts with mention of Neal and if Aaron is included it is an afterthought.
It doesn't take away from how good Neal was to mention that Aaron was incredible. I feel the same way about Mark and Gordie Howe.
Be kind. Rewind.
Re: All Time All Tournament Team
My list at goalie would be Stutz and Butters.
McDonagh would not make a top 10 or 20 list at defense for me. A great player but not great at the state tournament.

Re: All Time All Tournament Team
Agree on the McDonough thing. He doesn’t belong anywhere near an all time all tourney team conversation. Great player and great post high school career. Not taking anything away from that at all. But I don’t see the all tourney thing at all.
