MSHSL Oct 1st Meeting (Boys Hockey Season Fate)

They also canceled playoffs for fall sports, they were careful
To say this doesn’t necessarily mean playoffs for winter sports are canceled, but it does set a precedent

Re: MSHSL Oct 1st Meeting (Boys Hockey Season Fate)
Wouldn’t surprise me to see different entities start thinking about a quasi sectional and state tournament

Re: MSHSL Oct 1st Meeting (Boys Hockey Season Fate)
They only cancelled the "super regional" 1-game event for Fall sports, along with state tournaments. Motion was presented by Stein and failed 10-8. Means Fall sports will end with sectional events. Discussion after the fact was in regard to winter/spring sports. Main comment was the Board wanted to remain consistent from season to season unless there "is a drastic change in the COVID climate in the coming months", which is hard to see the way the pandemic has been politicized.
Big talking point during the entire meeting was to keep everything as regional as possible and to not bring multiple communities together for large events (holiday tournaments, state tournaments). That's why Stein brought up the motion for a 1-game "super regional" after the sections, where the champ from section 1 plays section 2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8. After some discussion, that failed 10-8.

Re: MSHSL Oct 1st Meeting (Boys Hockey Season Fate)
In regard to hockey, what is going to cause much of the hand-wringing over the next several weeks, is the fact that we've seen our kids play pretty much all summer. At least personally, I have watched Emma play against teams from MN, Illinois, Wisconsin, etc, etc and she will be playing against teams from Colorado, California, Washington, etc in the NIT and those events have run relatively smoothly with some adjustments for spectators, masks, etc.
The problem is the unbelievable inconsistency we've seen when it comes to hockey. Most rinks you go to have their own rules (locker rooms, when you can enter, fans allowed). There has been any sort of blanket policy that everyone has had to work with.
The inconsistency is what is driving a lot of the angst IMO.

Has there been any impact to your daughter or her teammates through these experiences?Thoen88 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 2:13 pm In regard to hockey, what is going to cause much of the hand-wringing over the next several weeks, is the fact that we've seen our kids play pretty much all summer. This would have been the best decision they could have made, had they made it today.
Re: MSHSL Oct 1st Meeting (Boys Hockey Season Fate)
The only impact has been making adjustments in regard to masks, who can be in the building and when they can be in the building. One problem is, and I've heard it at more than one rink this Fall, is that how "inclined" are people going to be to say "yes, my son/daughter is sick. he/she got a COVID test and it came back positive." Knowing that a positive COVID test on a team is an automatic 14-day quarantine for that team and recommended testing for any team that has played against them up until the particular player was diagnosed.InThePipes wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 2:28 pmHas there been any impact to your daughter or her teammates through these experiences?Thoen88 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 2:13 pm In regard to hockey, what is going to cause much of the hand-wringing over the next several weeks, is the fact that we've seen our kids play pretty much all summer. So now you start looking at it from a MSHSL perspective, once the hockey seasons, or basketball or wrestling seasons get underway, how quickly will everything get shut down when a player or six from the same team get sick?
Like was posted a little earlier, imagine where we could be as a country if the entire country took this more seriously 8 months ago.

Hear a JRG AA might be in the works... 40+ games with playoffs... few teams seriously considering it...

Re: MSHSL Oct 1st Meeting (Boys Hockey Season Fate)
Let's do the comparison:
JGA - 40+ games with at least a few fans including playoffs and a state champion
MSHSL - 18 local conference/section games with perhaps no fans allowed and a section tournament
Did I get that right?

Can someone refresh my memory...are the current high school coaches allowed to coach JG?

Glad you brought up Jr Gold. If HS Tryouts for the boys start November 23rd (Thanksgiving week), Will there be enough time for HS Tryouts and then Jr Gold tryouts to field teams for the Dec 4-6 Tournament (Spirit of Duluth)?

Good question. Talked to a relative in Duluth yesterday. They said that another question is, will Covid cause a temporary shutdown in that area. With positive case numbers and rates of infection rising very steeply in that area the last three weeks — some of it coming from northeastern Wisconsin — there’s at least a chance they might have to close things up for a bit in the next 30-45 days.

My son will be a senior this year. We're okay with the MSHSL plan and the chance for him to play his final year for his school and with his teammates and at the same time minimizing risk to vulnerable family members. I cannot understand why people are insisting we act as though we are not in the midst of a pandemic. Hockey will be played, fun times will be had, high school kids will be fine. That is all.

It’s not a pandemic anymore. Been downgraded, hasn’t it?dlow wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 5:35 pm My son will be a senior this year. And schools will be online in my area for the rest of the season. Things are trending badly (23 out of 1000 in Waltz formula for schools). Was 13 out of 1000 three weeks ago). But don’t worry you’ll get your season, right!

From school site
High schools students will transition from distance learning to the hybrid model on Monday, Sept. 28. Staff have been working hard to make sure we have everything in place to bring students back into the buildings safely.
As a reminder, in a hybrid model, high school students will return to school buildings two days per week with enhanced health, cleaning, and distancing protocol at 50% capacity. Students will learn remotely on the other days. Limited capacity in the schools will allow for maximum physical distancing. Students can find their “Hybrid A” or “Hybrid B” group assignments in Campus Portal. More information will be shared with high school families before Sept. 28. At this time, no changes will be made in the elementary and middle school learning models, or to the Online Learning Academy.
Give it a month or two and wait for the move back to online. We can play the game all day naming schools going one way or another.

That is just in last week. Give it time.

Hunter, we all know you are concerned for your children and others.
BUT, some of us are trying not to live in fear. Some of us are trying to find ways to make it work and provide some degree of normalcy for the young people in our communities. Is there a risk? Of course. But hiding is not an appropriate answer for me. I will (am) doing things to try and make it work with an ear to the ground for adaption.
I have one fear in life and covid-19 is not it.
