And you think BV has it bad #'s wise right now...

Post by ghshockeyfan »

So, I have only 13 experienced skaters that are available to play JV&V through Dec 1 due to inj/etc.

If you ever want to see a program using the 4-Period rule to its fullest, I can give you some good examples so far this year and through the 1st...

We had 3 skaters on our bench (same number of coaches) to end the 1st period of our first game. 2nd game was a little better, but not by much. From now until Dec 1 it will be even worse.

All but 5 players that are able will be skating at least 1 JV period to keep the team afloat and make the game & team viable.

Third period of JV will have only 4 skaters that have played organized hockey before now. Couldn't be more proud of these kids as they're all really giving it all they have.

Should be an interesting stretch. I'm praying for no more injuries, coincidental penalties, OT, etc.!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 11/17/05 1:51 pm

My favorite situation is when you have to tell your JV coaches to not play players (that are only playing a specific period) at the end of that period as if they take a penalty in last 2 min they will have to count the next period as well against their 4.

Of course, if they do get a penalty in last 2 min, you can just pull your G and allow the opponent to score so that the penalty expires...

And, thankfully OT is an extension of the 3rd period, so any player eligible for 3rd period can play OT w/o that counting as another period...

I think I have this right... I will be good at this by Dec. 1 - that's for sure...

GHS - you might double check that end/start-of-period penalty thing with MSHSL or somebody (sorry but I don't know who else you'd ask).

I recall a JV game Braemar a few years back where a kid just sat in the box (at the start of the next period) until the next whistle after the 2 minutes were up. She then skated off the ice and that partial period was not counted as one of her 4 for the day.

Maybe I'm recalling it wrong, but it's worth a look. Unless it's a LONG stretch to that whistle I think it would be better than giving up a goal on purpose.

Good point - and I also think sad for JV to have to give one up for that reason.

Also - I think that it comes down to opposing coach. If they want to push it, it could cost you the V game, as that's where you'd go over your 4...

Most coaches when you approach them will understand these situations.

Sometimes other players/fans/parents/etc. intervene and their complaints become the issue, not the understanding of the two coaches...

4 period rule almost caught up with me tonight...

Had to call a TO to get a kid off the ice at end of 2nd period (ref wouldn't allow me to make the change) as had she taken a penalty I would have had to forfeit the game - or pull the pull move to allow a goal at the varsity level...

Our JV lost 7-0 with new G making 30 of 37 saves. They had only 3 skaters in third period that had played organized hockey before this year.

Our V lost 5-0 and Eagan has a solid team. I was impresed with what Darwitz has done with this club over the past year as they have improved a lot (now ranked #20 AA in LPH today). Also nice to see AJ Jacka starting to hit on all cylinders these past two games. Strong hardworking player that has always impressed me:

<a href="http://www.esportsdesk.com/leagues/rost ...

Next up is Woodbury on Sat and Hopkins on Tue...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 11/18/05 12:08 am

Sat Woodbury Game

Post by ARM »

Is your Saturday game at home at 3? (if I read the schedule correctly) I've got a pretty full weekend already, but I'm going to make an attempt to catch your skeleton crew in action.

Tough One

ghs, Didn't see your JV game, but your kids seemed to lose a little steam as the game went along. Gave a good effort though. Had some nice flurries down the stretch, but the puck didn't go in for them -- that one shot looked like it hit the goalie's mask, or you would've been spared OT.

Amen, amen - I lost another senior Asst C. today to concussion. 12 experienced skaters now for JV/V on Tue.

Best part of the game was that a Woodbury player forgot her gloves, so I gave her a pair of ours, told my staff before the game "watch her score the game winner," and she did in OT...

Hmm...

Lucky Gloves

Post by ARM »

Well, I hope you got the gloves back. Put them on a some raw kid, and maybe they'll have a "magic slippers" type of effect.

I didn't like your jerseys -- impossible to read the numbers on the sleeves. I spent considerable time waiting for various players to turn around so I could read the number on her back and figure out who she was.

Good call on the gloves - and new jerseys on order. New set should have easier to read #'s I believe...

THANKS! The kids are still in good spirits, which is important. Between injury/illness/doing what's right academically/etc. we're very short.

We should be back to full strength by Mid-dec. Many 3-6 week inj right now, etc.

Giving that player the gloves was good karma, when you put out good things, good things come back to you! Keep giving gh, you are a great coach, it will come!

Post by hubbaa »

i think what is most important is that they don't get down and believe in themselves and the team. if they can continue to do this you will be more than a handful when the season begins to wind down...

keep them positive, regardless what happens next.

Thanks to both of you!!! And I agree on both counts (good things come back to you) and (keeping things positive)...

I have to say, I'm down to 10 experienced skaters for tomorrow - another just went down illness wise...

So, we've had to reschedule JV for tomorrow... - as just can't play JV & V with so few numbers...

My kids played their hearts out tonight, and lost 4-2 EN. they got down 2 PP G's early, but came back to tie.

It got even worse #'s wise. A player forgot her skates... Not good in rush hour traffic in Minnetonka when you're from Inver Grove Heights... She had them by the third thankfully.

A couple neat moments tonight. 8th grader scored first goal (Bree Battis) & a Sr. that never played organized hockey pulled some shifts in the V game.

Also had first start for a couple kids - one Sr. that has played a lot of JV, and another 8th grader.

The story of the night though was our G Mel Gerten. 35 of 38 shots saved. I do hope that people vote her into NDP Phase 1 just so she can get a shot at a tryout. She was deserving last year, but we had three G's so she didn't get enough time to get her noticed. Watch this kid the next couple years. She's very solid...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 11/23/05 12:19 am
