Class A Rankings Week #3 (12/11/2022)
The Top 4 all get tested this week but are able to come away without a loss. The Flyers soar back into the Top 10 after a good week. Meanwhile the Greenwave put together back to back shutouts in preparation for the Warriors. 8-20 is filled with lots parity and the most confusing team in A to rank Hutchinson who does have three goal loss to Willmar comes storming into the Top 20 fresh off a great week and big upset over Providence Academy. Did my best and again its early things are bound to settle in more next week.... right?
1- Hermantown (7A) (2-0-1)
Past Week Results: T 3-3 Centennial
Upcoming Schedule: 12/13 vs Duluth Marshall, 12/16 @ Rosemount
The Hawks received some tough news after the Champions Cup that leading returning scorer Senior Kade Kohanski sustained a serious wrist injury and will miss the next 4-6 weeks. Hermanrtown’s depth will now be tested even more and it was this past weekend as the Hawks went into AA Centennial without Kohanski and without goalie Dane Callaway in net and found themselves down 3-1 in the third period. They were able to show character and tie the game with just 8 seconds left in regulation but overall the result was not overly impressive. This week they will breeze by Duluth Marshall but the game at Rosemont is scary especially after the vulnerability they showed vs Centennial this weekend.
2- Warroad (8A) (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-0 Rock Ridge, W 3-2 OT Grand Rapids

They followed up their 7 goal output by struggling to score with Section 4A South St Paul in their home opener but they were able to come away with a 3-1 win. This week there's just one game and it will be a good early season test as the Zephyrs, who continue to prepare to be ready to take out the top two at state, take on AA Conference opponent Hill Murray.
4- Orono (2A) (4-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-0 Bloomington Jefferson, W 4-3 OT #12 New Prague

Backup goalie Johnny DeLong continued his good play in the net picking up the shutout in Brock Peyton’s absence to build the confidence of this group early in the season. The Spartans then traveled to ranked New Prague and found themselves in a 2-0 deficit after 1 period. Orono showed a lot from that point on as they dominated the rest of the way and were able to claw back and win a good overtime game in the West Metro Conference. This week is full of challenges for the Spartans. A Top 10 showdown with Northfield highlights the week but the more important games are the two Section 2A games that follow the big game on Tuesday.

The Lions behind the scoring prowess of Louie Wehmann and John Hendrickson Providence scored six 2nd period goals to put the game vs Minneapolis out of reach and picked up another key Section 2A win. However, the week did not finish as planned as the Lions dropped a crucial section game and were upset on the road by Hutchinson. One game does not define a team but this loss does raise serious questions about this team's ability to win a low scoring tight physical games. We will see if they can stay in the rankings after a very tough upcoming week.

After that though they suffered their first two losses of the year as they got off to a slow start and were blown out by 7AA Cloquet. They followed that with a ugly 5-4 loss to Superior. The Wildcats then traveled to Top 10 Little Falls and took on the Flyers and while they did take an early lead they were unable to deal with Flyer Forecheck and ended up dropping a tough game 3-6. New Ulm (3A) (5-0-0)- The Eagles won their 50th consecutive Big South Conference game. We know they can win in their weak conference but can they beat anyone else? Big test vs #15 LDC this week.
Mankato East (3A) (1-4-0)- The Cougars finally picks up a win but they badly need to start to get on a roll as they are still the favorite to win Section 3A.
Albert Lea (1A) (2-2-0)- Got routed by Rochester Century and the Rock Ridge game win looks less impressive a week later. Still keep an eye on this veteran 1A team.
Monticello (5A) (1-3-1)- The Moose showed they are a tough team this week with tie vs #18 Chisago Lakes and win over a good Cambridge Isanti team.

Chisago Lakes was able to tie the game in the third period but had to settle for tie even after controlling good portions of the overtime. The Wildcats then traveled to Top 10 Little Falls and took on the Flyers and while they did take an early lead they were unable to deal with Flyer Forecheck and ended up dropping a tough game 3-6. Tying and losing to those teams will get them prepared for the 4A Playoffs. This week two winnable Mississippi 8 Conference games against Pine City and Princeton.
19- Alexandria (6A) (0-3-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-7 #7 Little Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 12/15 @ River Lakes, 12/17 vs #5 East Grand Forks
The Cardinals go crashing down in the rankings this week as they lost to ranked Little Falls at home for the first team in almost a decade. While Alexandria has lost to three high quality teams the concern here is the way they are losing giving up 19 goals in three games. They will need to fix their back end issues fast as this week they play a sneaky tough River Lakes team on the road before hosting highly rated and tough East Grand Forks at home.
20- Fergus Falls (6A) (2-2-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-4 Sartell, W 5-2 Sauk Rapids
Upcoming Schedule: 12/13 @ Brainerd, 12/15 vs Willmar
The Otters had an up and down week as they dropped one to a solid AA Sartell on the road. The game turned on a controversial goal where the net appeared to be off but the goal still stood and the Otters were unable to provide much more offensive resistance after that. The Otters did rebound to pick up a road win at Sauk Rapids to end their week after falling behind early Fergus Falls rallied and finished their week with a win. This week they continue their CLC schedule with the bigger of the two games being against 6A hot starting Willmar at the end of the week.
The Next 5 in Class A Week #3-
Two Rivers (4A) (6-0-1)- The Warriors haven't played anyone yet but they are unbeaten and if they keep winning at some point they are going to work their way into the top 20.

The Next 5 in Class A Week #3-
Two Rivers (4A) (6-0-1)- The Warriors haven't played anyone yet but they are unbeaten and if they keep winning at some point they are going to work their way into the top 20.
ITS NICE TO RECOGNIZE THEIR NICE START TO THE SEASON BUT HAR D TO MENTION THEM AND NOT MENTION RED LAKE FALLS AND KITTSON.

The three teams in question are about equal and not top 20 teams.
It is nice to recognize them early (fairly early) in the season but understand that they need to prove a lot more than they have to maintain this position.

Red Lake Falls is 2-1- Beat up on Bagley/Fosston but took a barn burner OT 8-7 to beat Crookston, a team Two Rivers beat 3-1, and then gave up 7 additional goals in a loss to WDC this weekend. What about their resume says they should mentioned...
Kittson County Central- is .500 at 3-3 with two of those wins over a struggling Ely program and a 6-4 win over Crookston. They did put a good scare into Detroit Lakes I have my eye on them but again what have they done to be worth mentioning.
My honorable mention list includes-
Teams off to great starts like Two Rivers & New Ulm while the schedules are soft they are both undefeated.
Mankato and Monticello both have ugly records but are both Top 25 programs I believe and Mankato East most likely wins 3A.
Albert Lea was in the Section 1A Final last year and brings everyone back in their win over Rock Ridge is just well better than the two mid range 8A teams you are mentioning.
I would Include WDC before both KCC and RLF right now but they have their warts too because Proctor could say hey what about us but they have a loss to Greenway who lost to South St Paul etc....
I try to mention the next 5 off of either good team playing a tougher schedule with not so great record or hey look at this great start.
KCC and RLF dont fall into those categories right now. Again maybe down the road but neither has done much for me at least to be in that next 5 team discussion.
Re: A Rankings for 12/11/22
I don't think we are disagreeing at all.
You are showing something for a team that has not proven themselves but not disproven themselves.
I did the same thing a week ago, just telling the 'bored' hey we have other teams out here that are not great but are doing well with what they have.
What I am saying is that you are doing exactly what I did.
Nothing wrong with it at all.

Sounds Good, love your opinion just wanted to point out WDC deserves love too they took it to your RLF squad on Saturday. Honestly, right now after the Top 7 or 8 you could go a lot of different ways.elliott70 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 12, 2022 11:22 am I don't think we are disagreeing at all.

We should Mention Becker Big Lake they average around 5 wins a year most years and they are (4-1-0) right now the list can go on.
I just believe a team sitting at (6-0-1) deserves some mention over two .500 mid range 8A clubs at this time. And for sure on RLF they just got beat pretty good by WDC over the weekend.

Agree have seen this Poll and it reminds me of what the Let's Play Hockey Poll became not much time invested and I think just trying to give programs across the state coverage so good for them but not an accurate poll.stateofhawkey wrote: ↑Tue Dec 13, 2022 1:13 pm Kare 11's Top 11 posted yesterday on the MNHockeyTV Twitter page

Hermantown missing their leading scorer and not starting their top goalie tying a Solid "AA" Centennial on the road does not mean they move down in my opinion. Top 5 are pretty solid across most polls. Northfield can make some noise tonight with a big time matchup with Orono and Little Falls not being mentioned by this poll is just showing the lack of homework being done.

KCC wins a Barn Burner over RLF 8-7 in OT. The Bearcats play a defense optional style they have giving up an alarming 32 goals in only 7 games against not a very strong schedule, however they can score Senior Star Tyler Hennen has 37 points in just 7 games.lakescountrylife wrote: ↑Tue Dec 13, 2022 10:33 pmKittson beat Crookston 6-4, while Two Rivers defeated Crookston 3-1 (w/empty net goal).
FYI: Crookston is ranked 7th out of 10 teams in Section 8A, and Two Rivers barely beat them.
With their win over RLF they are the 5 seed in 8A, they should win easily this weekend twice and be (6-3-0) and they will most likely play DL in the Section 8A 4/5 Quarterfinal Game. They had the Lakers on the ropes this year earlier but their Defense issue gave in and they blew a 2 goal third period lead. They would have to like their chances in a rematch,
Keeping my eye on the Bearcats nice season for the boys up in Hallock!

DL was up 3-1 and 5-3 and you have them as the #4 now? But then DL doesn't have the history of TRF - still earning their stripes. If EGF beats TRF and then DL beats Bemidji, it will make things clearer or more murky.ClassAGuy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 6:08 amKCC wins a Barn Burner over RLF 8-7 in OT. Re: A Rankings for 12/11/22
I put DL higher in my rankings then TRF this week because of the game. I know DL had a 2 goal lead twice I included that as a reason I put them over the Prowlers this week in the rankings.lakescountrylife wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 9:14 pmDL was up 3-1 and 5-3 and you have them as the #4 now? However, in 8A seeding it is done by 8A coaches vote and we are still in early December but as of today with only a tie as the result DL gets the 4 and TRF 3 due to the Big 3 (Only three teams to ever win 8A) the nod. Lots can happen till then.
Again, Lots can happen yet though. RLF could easily beat KCC the second time and then they will get seeded over KCC as usually coaches give the second meeting the nod if you spilt during the year. Fun to talk about as still so many scenarios to play out. My statements above were off of the results we have as of today with only a Tie yes DL most likely gets handed the 4 seed by coaches in 8A
