I'd say that's pretty optimistic...holding SSP to 2 goals...nothing wrong with optimism and I wouldn't be at all upset if you were correct. i wouldn't be suprised to see ssp and roseville both lose simply because both teams traditionally tend to start the season a little slow and get better as the season progresses. however, i don't anticipate anyone scoring 5 goals against ssp this year unless we have a couple empty net goals at the end of the game..

but i will say:

roseville 4 wayzata 3
ssp 3 stillwater 2

I think we couls see a low scoring game with Way/RV, but I don't know what to make of the SSP/SW game... That could be a big scoring game with all that offense on those two teams, but then you look at the quality goaltending on both teams too. SSP has a solid D core on top of it - but I don't know SW that well D wise... Hmm...

Agree with Mr.Hubbaa. Think Roseville & SSP come out on top.

Stillwater has 5 strong D and 3 good lines. This should be a good game with SSP trying to get revenge for last years only defeat. I think the games is decided on which goalie comes up with the big saves when needed. My predictions:
Roseville 3 Wayzata 2
Stillwater 4 SSP 2

I don't know RV as well as I should, and same with SW D... Should be two great games - that's for certain...

SSP pays back its only loss of 2004 with a whuppin 6-2 over Stillwater. Stillwater is good, deep team - but badly outplayed in 3rd period. SSP destroyed them with 6 unanswered goals. Jones showed again is overrated - a one dimensional player. Albeit, the one dimension (scoring/shooting the puck) is quite good - had a cannon for a goal tonightm just a bullet. But doesnt play in own end and does not move the puck. Stillwater will be a factor at end of season - just ran into a buzzsaw tonight and their goalie hurt them also. A lot of good young quick talent who will be reckoned with in sections.

mnhockeygal,

jones has over flowing talent but i agree she could help her team a bit more. who knows, maybe she is playing as instructed? either way, i sure would like to have her.

stillwater didn't have its top goalie for the game and that certainly hurt them. but i think if they did ssp still gets 3-4 goals. the impressive stat for me is ssp held them to two goals. with the exception of ep i don't think there is a better offensive team in state. i don't know if there is a better d team in state than ssp, possibly ep?

I see Jones as a one way selfish player - but talented thats for sure. Possibly the hardest shot around. She had many opportunities to make plays to her linemates but does not move the puck. I have seen her now 6 games in last 3 years and I have maybe seen 10 passes come off her stick.

I couldnt agree more on your other assessments. SSP's D played very well, and killed penalties outstanding. Porter was outstanding in net. Stillwater far more deep than SSP, but SSP kept coming at them. I thought SSP holding them to 2 was more impressive than SSP scoring 6 (2 were very weak goals). However, even with 2 weak goals it also still could have been worse - SSP hit a pipe, had other chances. SSP clearly dominated the last half of the game and if you switch goalies SSP still wins 3-2 or so.

Bottom line is SSP played like a champion when they needed to. I am wondering if SSP may possibly give EP a game in Kaposia, whereas I came into season thinking EP 4 or 5 to 3 if SSP played them....

one thing ssp knows how to do is to win. they may not be the deepest or most talented team this year but beating them is going to take an enormous effort.

if ssp plays ep in kaposia it would be the championship game. if that happens the heavy favorite would go to ep simply because of playing 3 games in 3 days, which would favor the team with the best depth, which is ep. i would say a reversal of last years game, 4-2 ep. if they played each other the first game of the tourney i would say it would be a toss up..

Well said, and likely accurate. With SSP playing basically 2 lines and 4 D 94% iof the time, the 3rd game in 3 days will be tuff no matter who they play.

Look at Jones stats from last year and tell me she doesnt pass the puck? 44 goals and 34 assists. I have seen her play many more than 6 times in 3 years. Yes i agree at times she could move the puck more but with a shot like hers what coach in his right mind would be telling her to dish the puck off? As for goaltending i dont think you can say another goalie would have made it 3-2. It wouldnt have mattered who played goal for stillwater. Give SSP more credit than that, Stillwater just got outplayed the last half of the game.

Jones is a great player. I don't see her play much, so I can't comment on how she handles her D responsibilities. I also am not on her team, or her coach, not on her bench, nor do I know their team stratagies/systems and so I don't know what's asked of her. Hard for me to be ctitical of her even if I saw her playing less D than I thought was right for this reason as well. I believe at one point in time she was a D. An Orr like D I suppose, but a D none-the-less. I assume she must know how to play D, but again I don't know the specifics of the situation. This all being said, sounds like SSP is on a roll again, should be great to see if they can meet EP at kaposia, That may be the "State Championship" game as EP is likely the best team in AA and SSP the best in A as of now anyway... I also agree with the thought that EP is deeper than SSP this year - mainly due to losses to graduation by SSP (3 of the gretest players ever in G HS Hockey) and also the additions by EP from transfer (2 of the best players in G HS Hockey)... Note though that it's great to see the remaining SSP roster getting a chance to step into the spotlight, and it makes it that much sweeter to see them do so well too when some doubted them... I should note that EP will have to get through a tough bracket though to get to SSP at Kaposia (assuming SSP makes it through their side too... this is a great tourney field as always), including the AHA squad that many don't give enough credit to. If anyone takes them lightly, they'll make the opponent pay and pay dearly. AHA may be one of the deepest most true "teams" that I've seen in G HS Hockey. They all play both ways, have depth at D & G that's amazing, and the F's are great too. I should note that all four of these teams are well coached too... In a nutshell, they have no weakness... I'd say they are the top 4 in G HS Hockey right now - SSP, AHA, EP, and Stillwater... In no particular order...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 11/27/05 8:05 pm

Jones is a great player! A true goal scorer! She knows how to put the puck in the net! Defense is something that can be taught, scoring is something that takes a lot of work! Jones and Stillwater will bounce back from this... They may not get their shot at SSP again but someone will get run over by them.

SSP is a well seasoned and and well coached team. They should run 2 lines and 4 defenders. They know how to win and they have their best goalie in 6 or 7 years!
Between them and Hibbing it will be a good state tourney. At this point they are my pick to win.

Hockeyhead

Hibbing doesn't get enough credit either. Are they in the Kaposia this year??? I forget...

I would imagine that SSP holds the all-time record for least goals allowed in a season - 19 - in 97-98 or thereabouts??? that was in 28 games???

Chelsey Jones in 2004/2005 played 27 games, scored 44 goals, 34 assists, 78 points, was a +45 and had 9 game winning goals. What was that about defense?

From the Northeastern U website, women's hockey page NLI announcement...

"Chelsey Jones will join NU in 2005-06 after being one of the top forwards in Minnesota high school hockey. The Lake Elmo, Minn., native won six letters from Stillwater High School and served as the team’s captain each of the last three seasons. She was named team MVP in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and is a three-time All-State, All-Metro and All-Conference selection. In 2004-05 she totalled more than 70 points for Stillwater."

“Chelsey is a natural goal scorer,” Schuler said. “She’s fast, she’s strong and she’s a clutch player. She opened up her season in Minnesota scoring a hat trick this past weekend. She is regarded by her peers as one of the top players in Minnesota.”

...ah, but what do Schuler & her staff know, right.

Edit: Word is NU was just one of 9 D-I programs to make that call on July 1st.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 11/29/05 3:31 pm

I do belive it would have changed the momentum of this past game with her in nets. I don't belive the team was ready for the change. I will give SSP the credit they deserve, I belive they are a good team. But had Stillwater had Sobczak in nets it would have been a whole different game! MHO!

Jones

Post by hockeygymnast »

Another factor regarding Jones is that her effectiveness (especially on the def. side) is sometimes limited by the amount of icetime she gets every night. Her coach sometimes appears to have her on the ice when she is out of gas. However, it would be tough not to have her on the ice as much as possible with her talent.
