Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
Another fun topic to discuss.....

Pre-Season Top 10 Ms. Hockey Finalists (in no particular order)

Jones....Stillwater
Thunstrom....NSP
Lee....Wayzata
Pezon....EP
Buganski.....Anoka
Frakie.....SLP
Maunu....Cloquet
Roberts....Warroad
B. Johnson.....Blake
Hogan.....NSP

I probably left off some definite possibilities.....any thoughts?

Ms. Hockey
That's an excellent list including some who are sure bets as candidates...maybe all of em. There is probably four on the list I would consider front runners. I think a great deal rides on how each fares in their senior season (and their team) and I pretty much anticipate strong performances from them...I think it's going to be a real battle between a few and another difficult choice when the time comes to make it.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 7/21/05 7:49 pm

Re: Ms. Hockey
Just wondering...how do they choose who becomes Ms. Hockey? Do they just look at their stats and overall hockey performance, or do they also look at their off-ice accomplishments?

Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
You throw these names out only based on performance. I know of at least one of these girls that do not belong
on the list due to her inability to keep her nose clean. Maybe someone should post the Washington county police report sometime.
Shouldn't the persons character be considered?
Good luck to all the deserving girls with their recognition of their accomplishments.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
From what I understand the Ms. Hockey Selection is made by Media sources (Let's Play Hockey, other news sources) and College Coaches. The published criteria includes hockey ability, academic achievements, and community involvement. Does the selection take into account all of these criteria.........doubt it. Let's face it, Ms. Hockey is selected solely on their achievements on the ice. People may agree or disagree...just one opinion.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
Primarily chosen based on on-ice ability. If catastrophic or amazing off-ice items occur - I think those are then taken into consideration - but rarely as alluded to above.

Athena is the award that looks more at the "whole athlete."

Also, and some will criticize me for this, I don't condone off-ice issues (law-breaking sorts of things) - but I want to remind everyone that people - and especially kids - will make mistakes. I used to be of the "zero-tolerance" mindset re: this stuff, but my eyes have been opened a little bit in the last year or so to how to deal with these things differently.

I'm not saying I condone bad behavior, but I think that it needs to be more about helping kids that need help, than banishing them w/out any chance of redemption. Obviously again, you can't just look the other way when things happen that are bad, but I think that many forget to look at the circumstances and situations.

I've turned in countless "violators" of various MSHSL rules, etc. to my AD's over the years knowing full well the consequences that they (and my teams) would face - but I think for the first time I understand that the punishment isn't the end to the situation - it's how you help the child move forward from the punishment and learn from that experience.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
I completely agree with GHS !!! Nobody condones an athlete who violates the rules, but if it is an isolated case - then they should own up to it, pay the penalty, and be allowed to move on. One mistake does not give anyone the right to label an athlete with poor character.

I know the kid you are talking about, and believe me she is full of good character. She is kind and respectful of her teammates (especially the younger kids), a great leader, and donates many hours to the local youth program.

With all due respect to hockeydad42, who among us is perfect?? What happens after the error in judgement has been made can also define a persons character.

By the way, the kid you are referring to is probably the best two-way player on the list. Come watch her this year, and you will see a kid who plays on both ends of the rink !!!

Rube is out

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
I fully understand what you are saying regarding this but there is a problem with the individual as well as the coach who appears to be looking the other way. There has been other instances of the same infraction regarding the individual.
No penalties have been handed down, only rewards for making the team what it is today.
So much for the list. Just wanted to let you all know that all is not what it appears to be when it comes to the elite characters or is that players.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
Someone needs to bring this to the coaches attention. Once it is, it will be addressed I'm sure. Coaches can't look the other way to my knowledge. That's why I'm always amazed when people think it's so "wonderful" that a coach has done their job by turning in their players. That's part of our job!

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
Police records are public, and as such, are factual rather than allegations made based on heresay. Facts can be debated in a mutually respectful way on this board. However, I think we need to be careful with allegations made on this board that are not factual, particularly ones of this nature "other instances of the same infraction regarding the individual".
I know the coach you are referring to, and he has as much character as any HS coach - even GHS !!!!! He would not turn the other cheek, I know he would do the right thing because he cares about the players more as individuals than he does as hockey players.

As far as this player "making the team what it is today" - I say that the team is a hellavu team even without this particular player. Yes she is dominant, but she is not the whole team - they are loaded with other talent and getting better every year with old fashioned homegrown talent !!!

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
I agree - on all counts. (S)he also has a very good reputation. I belive that if there are some issues that may be percieved as not being addressed, that then they should be raised to the coach. I know that I don't like it when parents try to tell me how to run my team or what to do - but this is a case where I think a coach may appreciate some notice about potential issues if this concern is legit. then the coach can react as (s)he sees fit

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 8/13/05 11:27 pm

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
So you are aware of the infraction(s). What about the one that occurred last time. No names are being mentioned here so to keep the players' identity out of it.
Its not a secret to anyone associated with your community as well as others. The player in question did not sit out any time during the previous season as MSHSL states.
The point I wish to make is that the coach is aware of what did and has happened. He and the AD did nothing the first time. What will he or the AD do now that this has happened AGAIN? Its funny you see the coach mentioned on another post 'best coaches'. Someone needs to open their eyes.
So much for Ms. Hockey.

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
This is my last post on this subject - I do not like the direction it is heading.

First, while nobody has mentioned the name of this player - I think we all know who we are talking about - so they are certainly not being protected from your accusations.

Second, I am personally not aware of any other infractions with this player. Rumors are rumors, and I haven't heard any regarding this player and multiple infractions. I only know of the one infraction which happened this Spring, which is public record, and the player served their punishment (suspension) - that's right, the punishment has been served - so let's move on !!!

Third, How do you know that the coach/A.D. is aware of all these alleged infractions ???? These are some heavy allegations being brought against people of great personal character - with excellent reputations !!

I have no interest in continuing this - these types of posts are in my opinion underhanded and destructive - sounds like an alterior motive to me ???

Rube

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
No other motive here other than to point out that Ms. Hockey does not look at character, only achievements on the ice.
And there have been other infractions as a matter of fact.
No futher comments regarding this subject.
Amen

We don’t want to defame anyone here! - and I know that I for one have tried to keep this as positive and anonymous as possible (as always).

Kids will sometimes get a violation and serve it in another sport too.

Rube,

I for one do not know who this player is, but I do believe she represented herself, team and community poorly with the one infraction you yourself has claimed. I don't think she would represent our state in the best light and I most certainly believe she would not make a good role model for our younger kids.
The consequence is high when you are a good athlete and that is why people up for these awards need to think about this before they engage in wronge doing.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... seethem at: 7/27/05 7:53 am

Re: Pre-Season Ms. Hockey List
I do believe that the mGHCA has some criteria surrounding awards. I'v ealso seen conf. coaches not award AC, etc. for infractions, etc.

Re:pre season ms. hockey
I know the situation about this player and there is no previous violation that the coach or AD ignored. And to pass this type of allegation around is plain BULL. Stillwaters coach and previous AD are solid people and would never ignore such a thing. To say they did is slanderous and disgusting. I know the head coach and he has very strong convictions about his players and how he wants them to be good people in and out of hockey. This sounds like some of the BS I heard this coaching staff went through a couple years ago with one or two parents. This young lady is extremely well liked and respected by her teammates and community and to say one mistake makes her less deserving is just a ploy to take away all she has accomplished.

HockeyDad....

I have seen some and heard some of the things that people "need to open their eyes" to. Solid team, kid and community. Leadership that starts at the top... I question it as well.

Well as I personally know the situation and am not going by what I have "heard". Great kid, great coach, great program.
