Section 8A Outlook- Warroad is currently the #1 seed as they are unbeaten in Section 8A and on season so far still. East Grand Forks is also unbeaten in 8A with big wins over both Detroit Lakes & Thief River Falls. The Lakers and Prowlers tied so 3 and 4 seeds are gonna be curious. After that all bets are off Kittson County Central owns Sweeps over Red Lake Falls, Crookston & Lake of the Woods. The Bearcats have lost to both Park Rapids & Bagley/Fosston but they play both a second time and control their fate for the 5 seed. After that RLF swept B/F and won the second game over PR for the 6 seed. PR and B/F play this week for the 7 seed and the Pirates and LOW are the 9 and 10 seed.

Thief River Falls upset loss drops them but my gut says only to the #4 seed as 8A coaches will give them the benefit of the doubt. Red Lake Falls huge upset over Prowlers should be good enough to jump Kittson County Central for the #5 seed even though the Bearcats did sweep them. Bagley/Fosston has a win over the Bearcats but was swept by the Eagles but did beat Park Rapids the 2nd time of the spilt to stay at the #7 seed. Crookston beat and tied the Panthers but has lost to everyone else expect LOW to be at the #9 seed and Lake of the Woods is at the #10 seed having gone winless in 8A.

Section 8A Playoff Preview- Circle the calendar date of Thursday March 2nd, 2023 as the Section 8A Final will be taking place at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls and it looks to be one of the more highly anticipated Class A Section Finals we have seen in sometime. The Warroad Warriors have shown all winter they are the top team in the state probably regardless of class and yet I think most would agree if there was a team built to beat them it was their neighbors to the west East Grand Forks. In a delicious preview we got just a week ago we saw that the Greenwave are very capable of knocking off the high powered Warriors before they even are able to reach St Paul. If we do indeed get Warriors vs Greenwave part three in the 8A Final we are in for a treat.
The Favorite- Warroad the Warriors have been Class A’s elite teams all winter long. Warroad's true strength is their elite netminder D1 commit Senior Goaltender Hampton Slukynsky who played nearly every minute in net this season. He has two outstanding defenders in Senior Eric Comstock & Junior Ryan Lund on the blue line to play mega minutes in front of him. On offense they have the state’s top line as Star Senior Jayson Shaugabay & dynamic Juniors Murray Marvin-Cordes & Carson Pilgrim have been unstoppable all winter long. The Warriors appear to be locked and loaded and ready to roll through Section 8A to get back to St Paul and make up for falling just short of a state title a year ago.
The Challenger- East Grand Forks appears to be the one team standing in the way of Warroad’s return to St. Paul. The Greenwave have struggled with scoring this year but when they do it normally comes from their top line of Juniors Brock Schultz & Landon Jamieson and emerging Sophomore Jace Van Eps. Those three have really played well during the Greenwaves late season surge carrying a heavy load of the offense. They have two very good defenders in Junior Grady Magner & Sophomore Cole Bies who the Greenwave separate to try and keep at least one of them on the ice at all times. Junior Chase Mero who has won the starting job and has been solid in net for the Greenwave.
The Dark Horse- Detroit Lakes the Lakers again had a very good season this winter as they try to break through the Big 3’s strangle hold on 8A supremacy. They are led by their top overall player in Senior Defenseman Jacob Thomas who is a do it all 2-way threat from the blue line and he has gotten help from up and coming Sophomore Jace Fields who has had an impressive season of his own. Up front Seniors Cole Larson, Aiden Kennedy, Ben Hines, Carter Bellefeuille along with Juniors Cole Deraney & dynamite Freshman Easton Kennedy give the Lakers good offensive punch. Senior Goaltender Josh Mack has been very solid in net and this team could be one to pull a surprise and end up shaking up the hierarchy order of the traditional 8A Final.
Section Scaries- Thief River Falls the Prowlers have had a disappointing year. However, they still have Senior Tysen Loeffler along with a trio of Juniors Forwards Max Arlt, Braydin Lund & Defender Junior Jace Erickson who give Coach Bergland enough to pull off a playoff stunner or two. Red Lake Falls has shown they are capable of an upset when they took down TRF for the 1st time in school history earlier this year. The Eagles have four dynamic scorers in Senior Evan Girdler & Sophomore brother Gavin Girdler along with Junior Blake Brieland and Sophomore Brock Seeger who have all put up eye popping point totals this winter. Kittson County Central has the state leading goal scorer in standout Senior Tyler Hennen who can take over a game on any given night.
The Rest- Bagley Fosston the Flyers have had one of their best seasons ever and Seniors Markus Olson & Brecken Levin can be dangerous and want to finish their career on a good note. Park Rapids has had a good year as Senior Joey Hillukka & Junior Jeron Pinoniemi each had big years to carry Panthers this winter. Crookston has had another down year but Senior Jack Doda has been very productive all winter. Lake of the Woods is another team that has struggled throughout the winter but Senior Charlie Eck & Junior Randy Wood & Jordan Kvernen all have 30 plus points on the year.
1- Warroad (24-0-0)
2- East Grand Forks (14-10-0)
3- Detroit Lakes (16-6-1)
4- Thief River Falls (9-14-1)
5- Red Lake Falls (16-8-0)

#3 Detroit Lakes 6 #6 Kittson County Central 4
Section 8A Playoffs Recap
#1 seed Warroad 8 #8 seed Park Rapids 0
#1 seed Warroad wasted little time as they jumped out to a quick lead over #8 seed Park Rapids in their last game at the Gardens this winter. Four first period goals put the Warriors in cruise control as they put the game into running time vs an outmanned Panthers team. Warroad’s defenseman Junior Ryan Lund led the way as he had a big 4 point night (3 goals & 1 assist) and goaltender Senior Hampton Slukynsky picked up the shutout and Warroad moved on to the 8A Semifinals. In a weird twist the Warriors as the #1 seed will play on #4 seed Thief River Falls home ice Saturday evening at 4 pm.
#4 seed Thief River Falls 6 #5 seed Red Lake Falls 1
The Prowlers got some revenge for their shocking loss just recently to #5 seed Red Lake Falls in the regular season when they blew out the Eagles in the 8A Quarterfinals. #4 seed Thief Rivers Falls was tied at 1-1 after 1 period but a huge four goal second period put the game out of reach. The Prowlers Junior Braydin Lund scored the game winning goal at the beginning of the second period shorthanded, part of his big 4 point night (2 goals & 2 assists), which proved to be the momentum turner as TRF would score 5 unanswered goals. With the win the #4 seeded Prowlers will host the #1 seed Warroad Warriors in the first of the two 8A Semifinal Games this Saturday on their home ice.
#2 seed East Grand Forks 7 #7 seed Bagley/Fosston 0
The Greenwave put together three very sound periods as they took care of #7 seed Bagley/Fosston to move on to the 8A Semifinals. #2 seed East Grand Forks got 2 goals a piece from Juniors Brock Schultz & Chase Moe and Sophomore Cooper Hills who picked a great time for his first two varsity goals in his career. East Grand Forks will now head to Ralph Engelstad Arena Saturday night to take on the #3 seed Detroit Lakes.
#3 seed Detroit Lakes 6 #6 seed Kittson County Central 4
In the most entertaining game of the night #6 seed Kittson County Central put a serious upset scare into the Lakers. #3 seed Detroit Lakes was able to hold the State’s leading goal scorer Senior Tyler Hennen scoreless but that did not stop the Bobcats from finding ways to get on the scoreboard and hold the lead at different points throughout the game. However, the Lakers got great efforts from the Kennedy brothers as Senior Aiden Kennedy & 9th grader Easton Kennedy each had 2 goals in the winning effort. Detroit Lakes will now head to the 8A Semifinals where they will take on #2 seed East Grand Forks who they lost to in overtime earlier this year.

Section 8A Semifinals
#1 Warroad 6 #4 Thief River Falls 1
#2 East Grand Forks 6 #3 Detroit Lakes 2
Section 8A- #1 seed Warroad did not want to give #4 seed Thief River Falls any idea of section upset playing on their home ice as they jumped out to quick 3-0 lead only minutes into the game. After that Warriors just slowly added to their lead as they outshot the Prowlers 49-12 and behind the hat trick of Junior Murray Marvin-Cordes Warroad moved into the 8A FInals with ease. They will take on #2 seed East Grand Forks who was able to take care of #3 seed Detroit Lakes with a 6-2 win. In a game that saw the Greenwave jump out to 3-0 lead only to have it cut to 3-2 by the Lakers. However, the EGF offense was too much as Junior Chase Moe added 2 more goals to his strong playoff so far and the Greenwave advanced to the highly anticipated third round match up with the Warriors in the Section 8A Final.
