State Tourney AA Seeding Predictions

Post by SpreadOut! »

With 7 of 8 AA teams having punched their tickets thus far—and whoever wins between Gentry and Hill sure to not be seeded—what are people thinking seeds will be? Here’s what I’m thinking…

1. Tonka
2. Edina
3. MG
4. Andover
5. Lakeville South
- CDH
- Moorhead
- Gentry/Hill

I could see MG and Edina flipping places, but don’t think it really matters much.

What do others think?

I have no issues with that. It seems that when it comes to state seedings, the overall body of work is looked at a little more than head to head results like the sections are. In the past, EP has sometimes gotten the benefit of the doubt getting a seed a lot thought was unwarranted. And most of the time, they backed it up.

If Hill Murray wins, that will mean 7 of the 8 teams from 2022 are back, with the exception being #1 Minnetonka. I'd be interested to know what the record is for number of teams returning the next year.

I don't see a lot of drama to the state seeding this year. I see the possibility of MG flipping with Andover more so than with Edina, and is more significant than a 2/3 flip. There may not be much drama on Thursday.

Given the savaging the coaches have gotten here this season, over their supposed inability to seed properly, I see absolutely no support for that contention in 2023, none what so ever. In sections in 2023, the coaches got it right, and they will get it right on Saturday, too.

They can't flip Andover/MG. Similar records, and MG has beaten Andover twice.

Only two of the number one seeds in sections has made state on the AA side. I'm going to go out there and say that's a record for fewest. I have to guess the winner will be between Tonka, MG and Andover. Maybe this is the year for a good Moorhead team...

Anyone know what rankings the committee uses as part of their criteria for determining state seedings. Pioneer, Trib, Hockey Hub etc?

There is no committee I believe the 8 coaches vote on seeds which is why usually it goes by the Coaches Poll in LPH.

LPH rankings would then be...

Tonka
Edina
MG
Andover
Cretin

I'm not really buying Cretin but alas.

I assume this is sarcasm? You don’t really think MG will or should not be seeded, right?

Agree with Nostalgic Nerd above

Good prime time Thursday night matchup between defending champ Andover and Cretin . 3 Mr Hockey finalists on the ice .

I think you nailed it. MG and Edina could flip. Also see LS and CDH flipping depending on how much weight is put on the h2h. Personally I like CDH as 5 but that doesn’t mean much.

I think Moorhead will get the 5 seed.
The top 3 will not want to meet them in the first round.
And Andover handled them pretty well early in the season and would like to get them.
LS Cretin and Gentry have not done anything great to get the 5 seed.
Take it to the bank.

The coaches can vote however they want to, they are bound by nothing.

Also, the coaches that vote in the LPH Coaches Poll are not necessarily the same coaches that make the tournament.

Having players and especially a coach who has been to the tournament a few times is something that often gets undervalued in making state tournament predictions. To me, seeding, especially at the state level, is about who is favored to win, who is playing hot now? I know I'm in the minority here on that, but I don't mind, since I'm right. Section seedings and play bore that out, as I thought MG and Tonka deserved the #1 seeds.

Also, I love the not so subtle slam against Hill, mentioning Gentry like they're already in. Only Hill can make y'all pull for Gentry. It's an even money game, but despite Gentry's 8 loses on a weak schedule, Hill shouldn't even bother to show up tonight.

What would be cool to see is a number along side each teams name showing how many kids transferred to that school within the past two/ three years

Anyone up for that task? Tracking the recruiting side of this tournament

I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like this on Thursday

11 am. Edina vs Moorhead

1.30 Maple Grove vs LVS

6 Minnetonka Vs Hill or Gentry

8.30 Andover vs Cretin
