2024-25 Section 7A Preseason Preview
Section 7A since 2013-14 has been absolutely owned by Hermantown who since moving back into the section that year has now won 10 of the last 11 7A Titles. The Hawks have used superior talent and unmatched depth to bully the rest of Northeast Minnesota. However, many have been pointing to this year for a couple years now as a moment of potential change. A talented group of youngsters from Hibbing/Chisholm came up just short last year and they return the majority of their team looking to unseat the 7A giants. Also, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton looks like they have one of their best teams in the last few years and they will be looking to make a Title run of their own. Proctor wants to show they were not just a one year wonder and Section 7A looks like one of the more entertaining sections to watch in Class A this winter but ultimately in the end will anyone be able to actually take down the Hawks when it counts come playoff time as they are the #1 team until proven otherwise.

1- Hermantown Hawks
Head Coach- Pat Andrews 8th year, (152-31-11)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (20-9-2) Section 7A Champion and took 2nd Place in Class A
Hawks Outlook- The Hawks were hit hard again by graduation and for the third straight year a key early departure, Junior AJ Francisco to USNDTP, this offseason but as we learned by now this is a program that just reloads and should be a top team again in Class A. Hermantown returns a good core of forwards after struggling offensively last year as Senior River Freeman & Junior Ford Skytta return from the Hawks top line as the two leading scorers from last season and they bring with them 30% of the teams total offense which should only improve this year with both being a year older. They will have depth as always as Seniors Jack Slattengren & Charlie Marchand and Juniors Bode Madill & Henry Martinsen are back with varsity experience to allow them to build a nice offensive core. Also, help is on the way as Sophomores Beau Christy, Mick Martalock, Alex Nicklin & Kole Lendzyk are coming in from a AA Bantam team that took 2nd in State and they will add to what should be a much deeper offensive attack. The question mark of this team will be on the blueline and the overall backend. D1 commit Senior Henry Peterson, who had double digit goals and 20 plus points last year, will lead the rebuilding effort on defensive end. Also look for Juniors Cayden Manion & Kyler Berg to step up into bigger roles after seeing some varsity action as youngsters last year and incoming Sophomore Gabe Swenson, coming up from the AA Bantams, should be a player that can step in and add to the mix immediately to give them a promising defensive core. The goaltending role appears to belong to Junior Bryce Francisco who patiently waited last year as the back up to the best goalie in program history and he had an outstanding career in youth hockey before coming into the high school program and should be ready to take the net this year. There are more question marks than normal but looking at the wave of young talent coming up and what Hermantown returns they should still be as tough as ever under Coach Andrews as the Hawks will look to return to state for the 15th time in the last 16 years and win their school’s 5th overall state title this winter.

2- Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets
Head Coach- Aaron Jamnick 1st year, (0-0-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (19-9-0) Lost in Section 7A Championship
Bluejackets Outlook- The Bluejackets were an incredibly young team last year but by season’s end they had made a positive step forward as a program as they got back into the Section Final for the first time since 2016. Now this year, with a new Head Coach, Hibbing will again still be young this winter but they will have more experience and they look to be even more loaded coming into the season. They return a ton of experience up front as Senior Jace Kampsula and Juniors Tate Swanson, Kelin Elsner, Isaiah Hildenbrand, Benny Galli, Hunter Gustavsson and Sophomore Joey Gabardi, who made up 7 of the 12 leading scorers last season, all return up front and combined they made up nearly 70% of that teams total offense last year and they will be aided by the addition of a young gun in 9th grader Cole Swanson. who has put up ridiculous numbers in his youth hockey career, to add to that offensive depth. On the blueline they did get a setback when star Sophomore Jackson Strukel, who put up double digit goals and 30 points as 9th grader last year, suffered a lower body injury in Elite League that will keep him out for awhile but he should be back by the end of the year. While he is out, look for Juniors Ethan Sundvall & Mason McDonald who are back with experience and the addition of Sophomore Dylan Vesel & 9th Grader Whitaker Rewertz from the youth to still help make a very good blueline unit. In the net, Senior Rex Walli & Junior Gavin Lamphere split time during the season last year and both bring back plenty of big game experience there. Hibbing went through some growing pains early in the season last year but now they have had an offseason to train and return bigger and stronger and more experienced and they are going to be a very real problem for the Hawks in 7A as that section playoff will be a treat to watch play out up at Amsoil come playoff time as this young team is legit and ready to contend now.

3- Cloquet/Esko/Carlton Lumberjacks
Head Coach- Shea Walters 7th year, (73-72-4)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (13-14-0) Lost in Section 7A Semifinals
Jacks Outlook- Cloquet/Esko/Carlton had an up and down season last year, as while they were in Class A for the 1st time ever, they kept their mainly AA schedule and fluttered around .500 all year. They did earn a #2 seed despite the mediocre record but they ultimately fell in the 7A Semifinal round. Despite last year’s disappointments this year's team should be a major contender as when their deep Senior core was in Bantams they took 6th place in State and add to them an incoming Sophomore and Freshman crew that took home 5th place as State this past year and there should be plenty of talent on the Lumberjack roster to build a very good team. Up front, they return their three leading scorers in Seniors Bobby Thornton, Niko Gentilini & Grady Knutson who combined scored 50% of the teams goals last year. Add to them hard nosed physical players Seniors Brody Dushkin & Preston Strang along with Juniors Connor Sullivan & Neil Elsmore and the building blocks of an experienced offense are there. Add in Sophomore Daxton Collins and 9th graders Brahm Snesrud & Jordan Sewell coming in from the Bantams looking for ice time and they should be deep up front. On defense Senior Karson Young is one of the best elite defenseman returning in Class A and he along with Senior Hudson Snesrud & Junior Cole Painovich bring good experience back. Look for Sophomores Kaden Willis coming up from the youth to also contend for minutes on the blueline to add to their depth on the backend. They have their main two goalies back in Senior Jamis Halverson & Junior Jacob Iallonardo for experience in net. Looking up and down the roster for CEC you see tons of depth and skill in all three phases and this looks like a very experienced team that should have a big regular season and add to a deep top end pool of 7A teams that will be Top 10 contenders in Class A all winter long.

4- Proctor Rails
Head Coach: Jeff Laspi, 5th year, (51-46-2)
Last Year’s Record and Finish: (19-8-0) Lost in Section 7A Semifinals
Rails Outlook- The Rails are coming off one their best season in recent history for their program and they are hoping to build on that momentum coming into this season. Proctor did graduate an excellent Senior class in the offseason that included their elite goaltender but there are still some really good pieces returning to have them excited about coming into this winter. At forward they return their two leading scorers in Seniors Tanner Ross & Austin Bryant who along with Junior Breckin Ross, who can also play defense, combined to make up 47% of the total offense from last year. They also bring back Senior Blaine Boysen & Avery Lee along with Juniors Wynn Giswold & Dylan Denzler return after contributing to the varsity last year to build offensive depth around and look for Sophomore Owen Baker to come in and contribute immediately from youth hockey. On defense they will have question marks as they return Senior Cooper Annala and look for a bigger role out of Junior Gavin Davidson who both are back with varsity experience to build around. Also, look for depth blueline help to come from upcoming Sophomore Wesley Paulson from the Bantam team. The biggest thing this Rails team will need to answer is filling in the hole in the net but look for either Senior Brayden Mclean or Junior Will Pocrnich to try and fill in that role. Overall this should be another solid Proctor team that will look to compete and contend in a very good Section 7A this year and show that they are taking the next step as a program that can always be looked at as a Top 20 Team in Class A.

5- North Shore Storm
Head Coach: Shawn Lundgren 4th year, (25-48-4)
Last Year’s Record and Finish: (12-11-3) Lost in Section 7A Quarterfinals
Storm Outlook- North Shore had one of their better seasons in program history having their first season above the .500 marker in the past 6 years and earning a 5 seed their highest ever since the co-op was created back in 2012-13. Looking at what they bring back they should be able to have similar success this year if they can find goaltending as they return a ton of scoring from their 12 win team a season ago. Up front Seniors Aydon Althaus, Cole Anderson & Ethan Meeks along with 9th grader Kade Norman all return as 4 of the team's 6 leading scorers from last year. On defense they have experience as well as Seniors Jacob Carpenter, Cam Peterson & Hunter Tikkanen return as the teams top defenders and they will be needed as the biggest question will be in net. They graduated their 3 year starter in net and it appears 9th grader Dax Krech may get the nod this year but he struggled in his limited action last year and they will hope another year of growth can help him physically be more ready for Varsity action this year. If North Shore can find an answer in the net there is no reason why they cannot have another big year with all the experience they are returning and push to make the program's first ever Section Semifinal.

6- International Falls Broncos
Head Coach: Chad Baldwin, 5th year, (33-62-3)
Last Year’s Record and Finish: (6-19-2) Lost in Section 7A Quarterfinals
Broncos Outlook- International Falls will look to have a big bounce back season this year after a difficult campaign last year that saw them just muster 6 wins. There are lots of reasons to believe this could be the surprise team of 7A as they bring back their top end scoring from last year and welcome in the beginnings of what are some solid youth program prospects over the next few winters. Offensively they return their three leading scorers in Seniors Cooper Crandall & Asher Keep & Junior Zach Youso all who had 20 plus points last year to give them good scoring experience returning up front. Defensively they return Seniors Aidan McFarland & Kaden Korpi, both who are above 6 '2 in size, and Junior Lachlan Reiners who are all back with good experience. The reason to like this team to make a jump is year is the depth help incoming from a good A Bantam group of Sophomores Anthony Yerxa, Will Yerxa, Carter Thompson, Charles Phillips IV, Grae Shikowsky, Andrew Eide & Carson Crandell all who will compete for minutes and add to the top end the Broncos have returning. Add to the incoming depth that they return big Junior Kane Thompson in net who will be much better after a year of varsity as the sophomore starter and everything appears to be setting up well for this historic and tradition rich program to have a big year and contend for a top 5 seed in Section 7A this winter.

7- Greenway Raiders
Head Coach- Andy Sertich 5th year, (33-57-6)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (5-18-3) Lost in Section 7A Quarterfinals
Raider Outlook- Greenway only 6 seasons ago had progressed to the pinnacle of the Class A hockey world when they advanced to State Title Game on their magical 2019 run. However, the state of the current program is one that is in a major rebuilding phase in recent years. Greenway is coming off a year that was a struggle in general as they won just five games this past offseason and off of that team, they are returning almost nothing as they were hit hard by graduation. They will look to Juniors Bryce & Brayden Nielsen to grow off of good sophomore seasons as they return as the main forwards with experience and production from a season ago. Defensively, Senior Max Gangl is back with some experience on what will be a very young blueline. In net, Junior Zane Schad is returning with very little experience and there appears to be a ton of questions for this crew as they look to be in store for another tough season this winter.

8- Ely Timberwolves
Head Coach- Jake Myers 4th year, (24-49-1)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (14-12-0) Lost in Section 7A Quarterfinal
Timberwolves Outlook- Ely is coming off one of its better seasons in recent memory as they were able to win double digit games and have a very nice season last winter. While the end result in the playoffs was not one that they would have hoped for, they are still optimistic that last season's success during the year can be used to build some momentum off of this year. They did get hit hard by graduation but they do return Senior Garrett Rohr and Sophomore Owen Marolt who are both coming off double digit point seasons last year and will be expected to carry more of the offense this season. On defense Junior Jayden Zemke is back having double digit points as well to build the blueline around. They also have good experience back in net as their main starter returns in Senior Ben Leeson and the pieces are here for Ely to have another solid campaign. They big question mark as it always will be for this small program is depth but they should be looking for double digit wins again this winter.

9- Moose Lake Rebels
Head Coach- Chris Gamst 3rd year, (11-38-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (6-19-0) Lost in Section 7A Play In Game
Rebels Outlook- Moose Lake had another tough single digit win winter campaign last season that ended with them losing in the Play In round again in the Section 7A Playoffs. This is another small community program that has struggled mightily with numbers over the years. Looking at what they lost to graduation on paper this would appear to be setting up for another tough winter this coming season. However, while they did lose a punch of points from last year they do return Senior Joey Olson who had 20 plus points last year and they will need a big senior season from him. On blueline Senior Henry Wyandt is back with some good experience to try and build a new defensive core around. In net they have Senior Eli Gilbertson who played every single minute for them last season. They will look for good contributions for those big three seniors as they try to put a line up together with limited numbers again this winter.

Just logged in to catch up and saw this. Thanks, Rainier for the correction. I feel better now in spite of the fact Waconia shut us out 5-0 tonight. But the goalie is a 9th grader who looked pretty good nonetheless with the sog being something like 50-11. We'll be taking in 2 girls games before heading back Sunday.

Have my eyes on Ifalls so great to see the Broncos looking solid again. The Yerxa Brothers are for real! Handling Proctor's Ross & Bryant will be the key for them. Section 7A is very very very top heavy ... Hawks tying Duluth Marshall and struggling with Denfeld makes this feel more open and very much a fun Semi final and Title Playoff game

Oh, boy, Moose Lake beat Greenway? I can't remember that ever happening. Class A is right, gonna be another long, rebuilding year for the Raiders, but we'll be up there this week-end just the same.
I retired yesterday so I'll be able to get around more to some of these weekday games.
