2024-25 Section 6A Preseason Preview
Section 6A has been dominated by Alexandria the last three seasons after the MSHSL moved their primary contenders, St. Cloud Cathedral, Sartell & Little Falls, out of the section. The Cards have been notorious slow starters but they always seem to be playing their best hockey of the year come playoff time and they will look to win their 4th Straight 6A title this winter. However, on paper they are not the favorite as Northern Lakes has a new legendary coach and a roster loaded with talent and looks to be ready to break through. You can also never count out Fergus Falls who always puts competitive well coached teams on the ice. Morris Benson has also been building their program up in recent years and made the Section Semifinals two of the last three years, their only two appearances in program history, and they will look to continue that trend this year. However, with all that said, the question remains: can anyone knock off the 3 time defending champion this winter and get new blood in St Paul out of Section 6A.

BHS 2024-25 Section 6A Preseason Ranking
1- Northern Lakes Lightning
2- Alexandria Cardinals
3- Fergus Falls Otters
4- Morris/Benson Storm
5- Prairie Centre North Stars
6- Willmar Cardinals
7- Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades
8- Wadena Deer Creek Wolverines

1- Northern Lakes Lightning
Head Coach- Mike Randolph 36th year, (707-234-37)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (18-10-0) Lost in Section 6A Championship
Lightning Outlook- Northern Lakes look like a team primed for a huge year in Class A this coming season. First off, this group of seniors when they were 2nd year Bantams took 2nd place in A Bantam State and they have matured well over the past two seasons and now are full of varsity experience. Then add in the wave of depth they are bringing in as the group of sophomores this year who are coming off placing 3rd at the A Bantam State this past season. Finally, they now have coaching legend Mike Randolph and his 700 plus wins behind the bench to guide this young rising program to the next level. At forward they return a bunch of scoring from a year ago as Seniors Drew Paulback, Easton Anderson, Jerome Martin, Finnegan Fogarty & Jaden Marthalar along with Junior Jacob Peterson are all back having has double digit points last year and they make up over 60% of the teams total goals from last year’s Section Runner Up. Also, Senior Anthony Noyes returns after missing most of last year to injury and he should be ready to add to that production. Add to them a very talented and deep group of newcomers moving up in Sophomores Landen Cartie, Griffen Hannah, Parker Fulton, Josiah Reier & Waylon Katterhagen all who will be pushing for playing time coming off great bantam careers. On defense they have experience as well as Seniors Wyatt Balmer & Preston Verness along with Junior Leyton Cable & Sophomore Grant Vershey return with playing experience and should build off last years strong season and look for incoming Sophomores Wyatt Verville & Bodie Nybakken to push for playing time. In net Junior Hunter Moreland looked good in limited varsity action last year and he appears ready to take over the starting role but he will be pushed and challenged by Sophomore Sam Suja, a transfer from Colorado. The Lightning appear to have all the pieces in place, on paper, to make a serious push in not only Section 6A but also make noise at State like they did three years ago as 9th graders at the A Bantam State Tournament and this is a definite team to watch this year.

2- Alexandria Cardinals
Head Coach- Landon Olson 1st year, (0-0-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (18-11-1) Section 6A Champion and was Class A State Participant
Cardinals Outlook- Alexandria got off to its traditional slow start last year which has become an annual theme but another is that the Cardinals are always able to rebound in a big way, and for the third straight year they ended up playing excellent hockey down the stretch and ended the year in St Paul playing at State. This winter the Cards will be a team in transition as they were hit hard by graduation losing their 5 leading scorers and starting goalie and add to that they will have a new Head Coach this season which would leave many wondering why they are so high in my ranking. A deeper look though at the Cards roster would show there is a lot to like about Alexandria as up front they bring back Juniors Evan Klimek & Brody Berg and Sophomores Grady Olson,William Thornburg & Ehren Anderson who all saw time as underclassmen and were productive and made up over 30% of the team's offense last year to make a nice core to build with a year older. Also, look for Senior Cameron O'Shea who got some varsity action as well last season and look for 9th grader Owen Klimek to step in after a good Bantam AA season to give this team a good young offensive core. On Defense they return three varsity experienced players in Juniors Niklas Schultz & Aidan Schneiderhan along with Sophomore Grady Suchy who will be a good experienced trio and add in Sophomore Will Draper from the youth to build the defensive core around. They will need to find an answer in net which seems to be an annual question mark for them but there is a very good young nucleus here for Alexandria to mold into yet another State Tourney contender as they look to win Section 6A for the 4th straight year.

3- Fergus Falls Otters
Head Coach- Mike Donaghue 21st year, (250-232-36)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (9-18-0) Lost in Section 6A Semifinals
Otters Outlook- Fergus Falls had a tough season a year ago as after winning double digit games and reaching the Section Final in the previous 3 seasons neither of those things happened last winter in what was a difficult season that saw the Otters only muster 9 wins. Looking ahead to this season it looks like a rebuild as they graduated nearly all of their scoring from last year but they do appear to have help on the way as strong groups of Sophomores will be coming into the program to help this team remain a contender in 6A again this year. They do return Senior Jack Welde, who had double digit goals last year, and Seniors Michael Schmidt, Aiden Schake & Adam Kennedy return having had double digit points to build around but that's about it as far as production that is returning goes. On the blueline they return Seniors Braden Albert & Brock Scheueman who are back with some experience. They also have a dynamic duo in Freshman Tanner Donaghue & Luke Johnson who if they are brought up should find immediate ice time and contribute upfront and on the back end this winter. The Otters will need to find a new goalie for how competitive this team will be this winter but history tell us we should not count them out.

4- Morris/Benson Storm
Head Coach- Jeremiah Day 12th year, (114-148-3)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (15-12-0) Lost in Section 6A Semifinals
Storm Outlook- Morris/Benson has been building a very nice program and they have benefited from the newly designed Section 6A and been able to make the Section Semifinals in 2 of the last 3 seasons. They were hit hard in the offseason by graduation but they do return some experience in key areas and will also bring up some talent from their Bantam group that went to the B State Tournament last year to make them a good threat to make the semis again this winter. Up front Senior Zach Wrobleski, who had 18 goals last season, and Junior Kye Suess who had double digit points return to lead the offense. On defense, Junior Bryce Lehman, the team's 5th leading scorer last year, and Senior Alex Claussen are back with experience. They have Sophomores Gavin Meyer, Charlie Blume, Jacob Blume & Chase Baker coming up and may bring up scoring sensation 9th grader Connor Hadfeild from their youth program. In net, Junior Gavin Schmidt came on strong and won the starting job late in the year and Morris/Benson, if their younger kids coming in can play well, should again have good year this season.

5- Prairie Centre North Stars
Head Coach- Chad Wehrman 9th year, (78-118-2)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (10-15-1) Lost in Section 6A Quarterfinals
North Stars Outlook- Prairie Centre will look to continue to build off a good year for them last season as they were able to get double digit wins and earn a 5 seed last winter. This year they should have another strong team as they return scoring and experience in all three phases as they look to advance to the Section Semifinals this season which would be only the 2nd time they have done so in program history. Offensively Junior James Rieland & Sophomore Leyton Fuchs return as 2 of the teams 3 leading scorers last year. Senior Aiken Lambrecht and Juniors Hagen Brunkhorst & Derek Lopez also all return coming off of good varsity seasons offensively as well. On defense 9th grader Eli Warring, who had double digit points as an 8th grader, and Senior Caiden Frerichs are both back with good experience. They also have experience in net as Senior Carter Holman returns after being the starter last year. Looking at all they experience that Prairie Centre will be returning in key areas it should point to the North Stars having a big season this year and contending hard for top 4 seed in Section 6A.

6- Willmar Cardinals
Head Coach- Jamie Hagen 11th year, (50-200-6)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (7-18-1) Lost in Section 6A Quarterfinals
Cardinals Outlook- Willmar is coming off another tough season as this once proud program has really struggled over the last decade now in finding the success on the ice they once had. However, they do return some young talent this season and the numbers in the youth programs have been trending back up for a possible surge of success on the horizon at the high school level. This year though looks like a rebuild but they do return Junior Gibson Horyza & Sophomore Eli Hagen who both had good productive years as youngsters to build their offensive core around. Seniors Griffin Heid, Isaac Skindelien & Evan Ims also return with some limited varsity production in the previous season and Sophomore Max Garberding could add the offense from the A Bantam team. Defensively Sophomore Aden Jacobson is back as the team's 4th leading scorer from last year to lead the way and Sophomore Evan Jones could step in for minutes coming up from the youth program. There is a lot of promise in the younger grades but a key question mark in net will be a big one for Willmar to answer as they will need a new goalie this winter and that could determine the success they have this coming year.

7- Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades
Head Coach- Adam Wiertzema 3rd year, (5-41-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (5-20-0) Lost in Section 6A Quarterfinal
Blades Outlook- Breckenridge/Wahpeton has a lot to be excited about this year as last year they played a team of mainly 9th & 10th graders and found a way to win 5 games. That may not seem like much but when you factor in they had won just 2 games total over the previous 3 seasons combined it makes last year a big step forward for a very young team. Now the Blades return a team that is still young, but all have varsity experience now, and they return over 90% of their scoring from last winter. At forward Juniors Kai McDonald, Isaiah Bruechert, Michael Petersen & Josh Hofman along with Sophomores Jaxson Lopez & Easton Neppl are all back with double digit points from last year. Defensively Sophomore Matt Petersen is back to lead the defense and they have their starter in net back as Sophomore Cale Gilbertson returns with a ton of experience after playing major minutes as 9th grader last year. This is a team that is one to watch as they will look to now get double digit wins for the first time since 2020 as the Blades continue to build a contender up on the North Dakota border this winter.

8- Wadena Deer Creek Wolverines
Head Coach- Robby Grendahl 2nd Year, (7-16-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (7-16-0) Lost in Section 6A Quarterfinals
Wolverines Outlook- Wadena Deer Creek did a wonderful job of keeping their program alive last year and going into this season they will have some nice talent returning but will again have limited roster depth. A quick glance at the youth programs does show that numbers are getting healthier for stability down the road which really makes the dedication of these young men playing with a short bench very awesome to see to keep this long time Class A small school program going. Up front they do return their two leading scorers in Seniors Carson Davis & Cooper Ness as both return with double digit goals and plus 30 points to build a potent punch around. Seniors Milo Rinio, Peyton Mithun & Aden Krell also return with good offensive experience. On defense Seniors Sawyer Ferdon & Owen Hendershot along with Sophomore Austin Lucht are back with plenty experience. They will have a big hole to fill in the net as they graduated their 4 year starter there and they will also have a big question as far as depth is concerned but it's great to see these young men make the sacrifice needed to keep this program a float into the future.

With Wadena-Deer Creek's pairing agreement with Staples-Motley, the Wolverines are rescheduling their first two games with Moose Lake and International Falls due to players from Staples-Motley participating in the Prep Bowl.

Alexandria has made a couple of tweaks to their schedule.

12/12/2024 game at Sauk Rapids-Rice has been removed
02/08/2025 game added at Champlin Park

The two games with Fergus Falls have flip/flopped sites.

All changes have been made to the schedule in the first post.

PageStat again showing its a much better computer model than QRF ... yikes... But QRF does tend to get better as the year goes but just not the best model for hockey.

Couple notes the Computer Model doesnt take into account that Coaches generally do-
BW Blades beat Willmar head to head in only meeting gives Blades the nod over them for now
Morris Benson is (3-6-0) but at the moment own head to head wins over BW Blades & WDC

I dont see a world where Alexandria is not the 1, 2 or 3 seed depending on how their second game goes with Northern Lakes and their season series vs Fergus. Otters have been a nice surprise this year so far.

The Top 3 feel locked in some order but man will the battle for the 4 through 8 seeds be wild- BW Blades, Willmar, PC, MBA & WDC are all dead even every time they play its like a 1 goal or OT game.

Fun side story BW Blades could get the 4 seed and win the 4 vs 5 game if that happens would be first time ever in program history they make the semifinals pretty awesome story for a program that is coming off going (7-79-0) in the last 4 years combined.
