2025-2026 Schedules

Hill-Murray (Interestingly it looks like Hill and Edina are forgoing a Christmas tournament this year and playing their back to back right after Christmas).

First time Hill and Duluth East have done a regular season game in at least 15 years. They used to play every year when Lee and I were young.

I'd be in favor of Shakopee replacing PL on our schedule, too.

I believe the holiday tournaments are a week later than usual since Christmas Eve/Day fall on a Wednesday/Thursday, preventing a three day tournament from being played that week. So that’s why the Edina/Hill back to back is that Friday and Saturday immediately following Christmas.

Will be interesting to see how the Wayzata Turkey Trot looks next year with Maple Grove entering the historic Lake Conference. Have to imagine MG gets the boot, maybe in favor of Rogers or Andover?

That was last year. Shakopee graduated everyone and PL should be improved. We'll see though.

I heard that the PL tourney was planning to be over New Years or New Years Eve next season.

I believe EP has pulled out , as they typically face a northern team (Hermantown) the first Saturday of January, and the timing of Xmas/New Years (Thursday) interfered with also playing up north.

Almost all of Shakopee's best players are juniors or younger. Prior Lake had a very good Bantam team last year and those players showed promise as sophomores. You're right; they'll be decent.

Are you sure you aren't conflating two separate things? It would be possible for Hill to play in a holiday tournament showcase and still have the Edina home & home another week.

I'm not all that jazzed about these holiday tournaments in any case. There was a time when the idea was to allow teams to play more games, so MSHSL allowed 3 tournament games to count as one game. I want to say 20 games were allowed then, so this effectively made it 22. That's long gone by the wayside, so it's really just 3 scheduled non-conference games. I just don't see a big advantage to it.

  • Why is the White Bear away game at Aldrich? If it's White Bear's call, good on them. They may sell more tickets, and the more they play at Aldrich the better for them.
  • Prior to this, the Rapids game had mid afternoon puck drop, now like the Moorhead game it's an evening start. Is this the way Lex prefers it? I guess I'm going to have to become a Valued Member of the Hilton Rewards Club.
Now that I look at it, the Stillwater game is the only matinee.

There can’t be a holiday tournament the week of Christmas since there would have to be games on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Presumably Edina and Hill moved their back to back to this week to allow for more flexibility in their schedule later in the year. I have no clue if Edina will still play in the Casino tournament and haven’t heard anything suggesting they won’t.

Eh, there's a lot of speculation going on here. We humans like things to make sense, and in the absence of solid information, we're more than willing to make assumptions. This is far from the first time the calendar has lined up this way, and in previous years holiday showcases have been held. Just because the rooster crowed immediately before sunrise does not mean the crowing of the rooster caused the sun to rise. I'm willing to be proven wrong (my kids do it frequently, and with glee), but I prefer hard data to presumption. No post hoc ergo propter hoc for me, thank you.

Tournament: A series of contests in which a number of contestants compete and the one that prevails through the final round or that finishes with the best record is declared the winner.

These are not holiday tournaments, they are mite-style jamborees.

Why can't there be holiday tournaments/showcases this year? (ESPG is correct. If you're not playing down to a champion, it is not a tournament). Christmas Eve is Wednesday, Christmas Day is Thursday. You could play Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There's no law that says games have to be played on three consecutive days. The level of play might even be beetter on the final day after the players have two days of rest.

The last time the calendar lined up this way (2014-15) the Schwann’s Cup was held Monday-Wednesday the week following Christmas. I’ll agree with you that these are mire invitationals rather than tournament, and I believe they even call themselves such (at least the Casino one does), but they’re “tournaments” as a vestige of yesteryear.

Better question is when and why did these things stop being a bracket style tournament type event? Haven't been paying that close of attention to know when the switch was made but I do know that at some point relatively recently that switch was made.

I suspect that this had something to do with having more control over who your opponents will be. On Rink of Fire Tony said that (at least for the Casino showcase this year) that teams could pick two opponents, block one, and had one assigned. I have no clue if that is typical for other events.

What i don't understand is that if you just schedule 3 non-conference opponents, guess what? Yean, you get to pick all 3! Imagine that. So, to me, the only benefit of participating in a holiday showcase is to play 3 games in 3 days. And that's not a bad idea. But then I'm massively confused by Lex choosing 2 of the 3 opponents he did this season. Why bother hauling the team to Casino for 3 days in a row if you're scheduling middling teams?

I liked the format of 4 teams playing a round robin format. If someone wants to keep score, and determine a champion, knock yourself out. It may come down to who had more shots on goal by left handers in the first period, so don't expect me to care about that. But that format allows for all evening games & better attendance, and you know who your team is playing when, and if it's worth staying for both games.

In other years there were games played on Mon, Tue, and on Wed, even though that's NYE. Shocking news to some here I'm sure, but I'm not the party animal I once was; still, I find it very strange to think of a high school hockey game on NYE starting after 3:00 or so. But this is another point in favor of having 4 teams in a round robin format, you can get in those games on the last day early, like 11:00 and 1:00.

That would be a great format for White Bear to get primed for those years when they play late at the Fuse Box on Thursday and then early Friday at MAR-i-UCC-i.

The YHH tourney at Prior Lake is Dec 30-Jan 1. Hill-Murray and one other team pulled out this year - Shakopee and Holy Angels are now in.
