Section Changes
What is this group hearing about section changes? I am hearing there are big changes afoot, but don't know the reliability of sources. Big changes as in permissions being granted for teams to drop to A although they may not fit the attendance criteria (this is not in reference to Roseau); teams moving sections to make up for those drops, etc. Is anyone else hearing that there are some big changes coming?
Re: Section Changes
A lot of discussion in the Roseau to A thread:

Re: Section Changes
Just some a few things as we get closer to 4/3 when the official section new assignments are out from MSHSL-
Rumor
Heard the Appeals Committee was much tougher on appeals down this year they really looked at the recent success of programs as schools have voiced displeasure with some of the larger school co-opts coming down and having big success.
With that in mind the big one of late that has picked up steam hearing from more and more is that Minneapolis was denied their appeal this year because of their recent program success and they will have to stay in 6AA. (Not sure on truth)
Another one is that St Paul Highland was allowed to move down due to lack of program success (Not sure on truth)
Heard other schools been sent that appealed like St Cloud & Tartan to name a few not sure how true that is and what they found out
Hearing Alexandria will be in 8AA but that has not been confirmed
Facts
The move ups had to be in declared back on 1/24 so the line was set at 1188 (St Louis Park in last one in AA) the appeals down wont change that line ... Meaning lets say they approved the appeal down of Tartan example they wont change the attendance line then make the next biggest school Hastings at 1177 move up... The line is set made that line knowing all the schools who opted already back in the January. Hastings will be Class A next year regardless if they let some schools appeal down or not.
Blake, Sartell & Hastings will be Class A this has been confirmed by teams
Roseau will stay AA
All teams that appealed down have now been notified if they were accepted or not by MSHSL
This is year #5 & 6 of the current 6 year cycle meaning they dont want to make much change they want to keep sections as close to as the same as possible but they will need to add teams to sections with less than 8 teams (They always want minimum of eight) so 1AA, 6AA & 4A will need to add teams and will need to place the new teams coming up to AA or down to A based on geography
With this all in mind here is "Guess" on what we could see on 4/3 ... Again this just looking at the Map and the dots (Still never know in the computer map and dont know all the appeal status for all schools, there is always a few surprises)

Re: Section Changes
Tartan doesn’t even field A teams at youth level anymore (they play as “East Metro,” a co-op of Tartan, North St. Paul, Johnson and Como), let alone AA teams. B1 is there highest level at bantams, peewees and squirts. And they are only solid at B1, by no means very good. MSHSL gonna deny Tartan going down to A, but allow new St. Paul co-op to play A? Come on? The demographics of Highland Park High School alone (just one of the high schools of the new St. Paul co-op) are more hockey friendly than the demographics of Tartan and North St. Paul High Schools (the high school co-op for Tartan).ClassAGuy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 8:08 pm Just some a few things as we get closer to 4/3 when the official section new assignments are out from MSHSL-

And Minneapolis NEVER should have been allowed to play Class A. The demographics at Minneapolis Southwest High School (where most of the Minneapolis co-op players go to school) are WAY more hockey-friendly than countless schools playing Class AA now.
Re: Section Changes
Agree if there is truth to Tartan appealing down I hope the get approved. No idea how truthful that is but you could flip St Paul into 4AA and Tartan into 4A and the above would look good.SpreadOut! wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 9:11 pmTartan doesn’t even field A teams at youth level anymore (they play as “East Metro,” a co-op of Tartan, North St. Paul, Johnson and Como), let alone AA teams. When you mention the demographics of Highland, MPLS/Southwest, and Tartan, have you looked at hard data? Or are you just going by vibes?

And Minneapolis NEVER should have been allowed to play Class A. The demographics at Minneapolis Southwest High School (where most of the Minneapolis co-op players go to school) are WAY more hockey-friendly than countless schools playing Class AA now.
My initial thought on this is that I would have a bias that any co-op should be in class A if they want to be. But that may be too simplistic for a hard and fast rule.
What would be the most successful co-op in hockey for the past ten years? Anyone have an idea? I may not be talking about a co-op where one school can easily stand alone, and they co-op with another school where that school has no chance to field a team, and they only contribute a couple/three kids. That's more of a charity situation. I think of a true co-op as a situation where none of the schools involved could field a team by themselves. If Mahtomedi co-ops with Church of The Zion Academy For the Lefthanded, that's not really much of a co-op.
But at then end of the day, I really have little concern about this.
Hockey Is For Everyone

And BOOM... Make one guess post and get some good information with a loaded inbox on X this morning.
Here is some updates
MPLS was NOT DENIED they will be back in Class A. Source who reached is tied to the program and they had the confirmation from the MSHSL they were not denied.
Was told by another source they heard St Paul was allowed down to Class A under the MPLS rule but they didnt have the confirmation.
Also been told St Louis Park, Waconia, Tartan, Osseo & Irondale were approved to go to Class A
That shakes up the map in AA because someone has to fill the spot of 6AA left by Blake and someone needs to fill the spot in 1AA left when Northfield was able to drop the co-opt two years ago to get back in Class A after the map was made.
To fill gaps again i dont follow AA but this was rumor no one knows until the maps is done on 4/3 but below it what was sent.

Holy Angels to 3AA

Re: Section Changes
To your question, you gotta look at data (demographics and enrollment of schools) and youth numbers. I’m gonna do that in a response to Class A guy’s latest post saying Minneapolis is getting to stay Class A—which I theoretically don’t have a problem with UNLESS the MSHSL continues to demand schools like Tartan and others in much tougher situations than Minneapolis have to play Class AA.East Side Pioneer Guy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 21, 2025 5:52 amWhen you mention the demographics of Highland, MPLS/Southwest, and Tartan, have you looked at hard data? Why? US News & World Report publishes a lot of data on every high school in the country for rankings it does. Let’s compare Minneapolis and Tartan.
Minneapolis is a co-op of all Minneapolis public high schools. It goes without saying that the enrollment of the schools far exceeds the enrollment needed to be classified AA. So let’s look at other data the MSHSL uses to make their decision.
While all Minneapolis public high schools make up the Minneapolis co-op hockey program, the vast majority of the players on the team attend Southwest or Washburn.
Here’s data on Southwest from US News & World Report…
Enrollment: 1,484
% of students who are non-white: 36.3%
% of students who are economically disadvantaged: 29%
And here’s Washburn’s data…
Enrollment: 1,582
% of students who are non-white: 41.8%
% of students who are economically disadvantaged: 37%
Now, let’s look at the data for Tartan and North St. Paul, the two high schools that make up the Tartan co-op hockey program.
Tartan
Enrollment: 1,683
% of students who are non-white: 67.8%
% of students who are economically disadvantaged: 57%
North St. Paul
Enrollment: 1,594
% of students who are non-white: 73.1%
% of students who are economically disadvantaged: 65%
So, objectively, clearly the two main Minneapolis schools have hockey-friendlier demographics than Tartan and North St. Paul.
Okay, but what about the youth programs that feed the high school programs? Here again, Minneapolis dominates.
Minneapolis Storm Hockey 2024-25 Season
Bantam teams (7): A (made state tourney), two B1, two B2, two C
Peewee teams (8): A, two B1, three B2, two C
Squirt teams (7): A, B1, three B2, two C
East Metro Stars Hockey 2024-25 Season (note this is a co-op between Tartan, North St. Paul AND St. Paul Johnson & St. Paul Como)
Bantam teams (2): B1 and C
Peewee teams (3): B1, B2, C
Squirt teams (3): B1, B2, C
I think it’s a a big stretch to allow the Minneapolis co-op team—given their enrollment, hockey-friendly demographics, large and successful youth program and high school success (Minneapolis made state tourney a couple years ago and was #1 seed in section this year, falling to Orono in section championship)—but I assume the MSHSL continues to allow it because of the romantic idea of revitalizing urban hockey. But here’s the deal: in Minneapolis, it’s already revitalized. I can live with it, though, IF they allow programs with more challenging situations—like Tartan—also to play Class A.
Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk!
Re: Section Changes
Waconia and St. Louis Park now A - going to be a ton of movement in sections in both classes.
Re: Section Changes
I guess Alexandria should have filed an appeal.....
Re: Section Changes
Final Update
Sartell, Hastings, Blake down to A on Enrollment or not opting up
MPLS, St Paul Highland Park, Osseo, St Louis Park, Waconia & Tartan down to A on appeals granted
Also hearing Irondale now may have been approved for Class A
Roseau, Alexandria, St Cloud, New Prague, Two Rivers AA
There may be some more outliers but this feels pretty confident
AA Sections are gonna have to make so big movements

Re: Section Changes
Again, as is the case with Tartan, I don’t know how MSHSL can justify with a straight face allowing Minneapolis to stay Class A while forcing Armstrong-Cooper to stay AA. Like I did above comparing Southwest & Washburn to Tartan & North St. Paul, here’s the data for Armstrong-Cooper…
Armstrong
Enrollment: 1,832
% of students who are non-white: 51.6%
% of students who are economically disadvantaged: 45%
Cooper
Enrollment: 1,630
% of students who are non-white: 82.2%
% of students who are economically disadvantaged: 75%
Armstrong-Cooper Youth Hockey 2024-25 Season:
Bantam teams (3): A (made state tourney), B1, C
Peewee teams (4): A, B1, B2, C
Squirt teams (4): A (went 1-7 in their league), B2, two C
Again, Minneapolis beats Armstrong-Cooper in every single category. There is ZERO justification for allowing Minneapolis to play Class A while forcing Armstrong-Cooper to play Class AA. ZERO.
Does MSHSL ever publicly justify their decisions?

Re: Section Changes
I think it's weird that since the MSHSL got into the business of deciding who "belongs" in A or AA, why it doesn't go both ways? If a program is too economically disadvantaged and unsuccessful to be in AA, then why can't they decide an A program is too economically advantaged and successful to stay in A?

Re: Section Changes
Good point. Under that criteria, Mahtomedi (crazy high end demographics; fields AA youth teams; tons of success at Class A), Orono (crazy high end demographics; lots of success at Class A) and Hermantown (recruits from all over northern MN; fields AA teams at youth level; tons of success at Class A) would be forced up. Could also argue same for East Grand Forks (fields AA youth teams; draws transfers from Grand Forks across River; tons of success at Class A) and Warroad (recruits from all over northern MN; tons of success at Class A).rainier2 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 21, 2025 5:26 pm I think it's weird that since the MSHSL got into the business of deciding who "belongs" in A or AA, why it doesn't go both ways? Re: Section Changes
Just a question -- if they do a pin drop for placement, and if St Louis Park moves from AA to A, is there any chance Tonka moves to 6AA and Jefferson goes to 2AA?
If so, what a loaded section that would be with Tonka, Edina, Benilde and Wayzata.

Re: Section Changes
You have Waconia in both A and AA, which I assume is an oversight. You really think they’ll move Andover to 5AA? Really dilutes 7AA, but I guess it makes sense geographically.ClassAGuy wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 12:08 am With the news of all the A appeals allowed it leaves AA with only 64 teams (8 teams per section)
