As we hit the Holiday Break, the Top 5 hold steady, and after that it's anyone's guess, as this past week only made ranking the rest more hazy, but this coming week will offer more good Class A Hockey! Week #5 Class A Rankings below:
1. Hermantown (7-0-2)
Past Week Results: W 9-2 Duluth Denfeld, W 7-4 Maple Grove
Upcoming Schedule: 12/23 @ #8 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, 12/26 vs #3 Delano, 12/27 vs White Bear Lake
The Hawks had another strong week; they handled AA Denfeld and Maple Grove to stay steady at the top, and there isn’t much else new to say here; they are just going about their business at the moment. They will now dip their toe back into the Class A pool as they have two good teams vs Cloquet/Esko/Carlton and Delano before wrapping up a busy holiday week by hosting AA White Bear Lake.
2. Hibbing/Chisholm (9-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 10-3 Cambridge-Isanti, W 7-4 #9 Mahtomedi
Upcoming Schedule: 12/23 vs Gentry Academy, 12/27 vs #3 Delano
Hibbing won the “Battle of the Bluejackets” game with ease to start the week. They did get pushed by Mahtomedi but passed that test in a key Class A Top 10 game, keeping pace with Hermantown. Their two opponents this week will offer different challenges, as while they should beat Gentry if they are not careful, an upset could loom. They then finish the week with a big showdown with the team right beneath them in these rankings when they host Delano.
3. Delano (7-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-1 #10 Orono, W 5-2 #12 St Cloud Cathedral
Upcoming Schedule: 12/23 @ Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, 12/26 @ #1 Hermantown, 12/27 @ #2 Hibbing Chisholm
Delano had another great week as they were able to pick up two more Top 15 Class A wins. They started by claiming an important Section 2A win over Orono and then closed with a solid effort vs a rising Cathedral team. Right now, the Tigers are (7-0-0) vs Class A teams, which includes a head-to-head victory over Warroad and five overall Top 15 A wins. They sit solidly at #3 and will now head north to face the two teams above them in Hermantown and Hibbing/Chisholm this week.
4. Warroad (8-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-0 Thief River Falls
Upcoming Schedule: Idle
The Warriors are firing on all cylinders, as they have now won seven games in a row since their (1-2-0) start. They were able to blast a struggling Thief River Falls group for a Section 8A in their only action of the week. Now, in an interesting schedule quirk, they will take next week off as they await hosting their Holiday Tourney. There is a lot to like about this team, and they will look to fine-tune things in practice as they prepare to make a run in the 2nd half of the year.
5. Sartell (7-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 Gentry Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 12/23 @ Moorhead
The Sabres were able to get back into the win column this week in their only action as they were able to dig out of an early hole to pick the season sweep of AA Gentry who has beaten many teams below in this ranking for a quality data point. This week they will get to test themselves against one of State’s best as they make a trip up to Spud Country to face mighty Moorhead for a great test before the Holiday break as this team continues their strong start to the season.
6. Blake (8-2-1)
Past Week Results: W 8-3 Rochester Century/JM, T 2-2 OT #16 Rochester Lourdes
Upcoming Schedule: Idle
The Bears went south this week, and they had some mixed results as they were able to dispatch of AA Rochester Century/JM with ease, but they ran into some trouble the following day with an underrated Lourdes team. They ultimately had to settle for a tie, which was not a great result, but when you think about the muddled mess of teams below them and factor in that Blake still does not have a Class A loss on the season vs a fairly decent schedule, they hold on to their spot in the rankings week. Now will be idle next week before they head into the Holiday Classic in the Park.
7. Northfield (6-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 1-0 OT #20 Waseca
Upcoming Schedule: 12/26 @ #19 Northern Lakes, 12/27 @ #17 Detroit Lakes
Northfield survived a serious scare when they ventured to 1A foe Waseca this week. In a game that felt like it was tailor-made for a big section upset, the Raiders showed some character, finding a way to win in overtime on the road. This is not a team right now that has the scoring we are used to, and they are going to play tight games. There will be nothing easy about this coming week as they head north to take on two tough, structured, ranked teams in Northern Lakes & Detroit Lakes, which will be a great post-Christmas challenge.
8. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (5-5-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-2 #12 St Cloud Cathedral, W 4-2 #9 Mahtomedi
Upcoming Schedule: 12/23 vs # 1 Hermantown
The Lumberjacks couldn’t hold a third period lead against St Cloud Cathedral to begin the week, but they followed that up with a big upset win over a good Mahtomedi clue which reinforces their status as a top ten team and a threat in Class A. How big of threat they are is yet to be determined due to having the State's top two teams in their section but they will get a shot at the Hawks at home this week and they will look for another upset win.
9. Mahtomedi (3-5-2)
Past Week Results: T 2-2 OT St Thomas Academy, L 2-4 #8 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, L 4-7 #2 Hibbing/Chisholm
Upcoming Schedule: 12/27 vs East Ridge
The Zephyrs are officially one of the toughest teams to rank at the moment. They have shown they can play with high-end teams, like when they tied AA Hill Murray and STA. They have also been very competitive when playing the likes of #2 Hibbing and #4 Warroad. However, the loss to CEC this week does put their stock in some doubt, and their best win to date is against a struggling EGF crew. Will keep them just inside the Top 10 for now, and they will play AA East Ridge this week in a game where they could badly use a win.
10. Orono (3-4-2)
Past Week Results: L 1-3 #3 Delano, W 4-3 #12 St Cloud Cathedral
Upcoming Schedule: 12/23 vs #22 Minneapolis
The Spartans continued to push through their gauntlet of a schedule as they fell in their big section rivalry match-up vs. Delano, but to their credit, they turned around the next night and went into Cathedral and for the first time this year put together a third-period comeback win, which is a big step in the right direction for this group. Just one game this upcoming week vs section foe Minneapolis, which is a game they definitely want to win to help their case for a Top three seed.
11. Breck (6-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 Westonka
Upcoming Schedule: 12/27 vs Two Rivers
Breck took care of Westonka in their only action of the week, which is a good section win as they work to try get a top 4 seed to have home ice in the Quarterfinal Round. They still have the head to head win over Cathedral, and two tight losses in overtime to Orono & Blake keep them slotted in this portion of the rankings. This week, they take on AA Two Rivers, which really won't have an impact on their section standing or overall ranking within Class A, but is still a game they want to win.
12. St Cloud Cathedral (4-6-0)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 #8 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, L 3-4 #10 Orono, L 2-5 #3 Delano
Upcoming Schedule: Idle
The Crusaders beat Cloquest/Esko/Carlton to start the week, which was another positive step in the right direction for this young and improving team, though the losses to Orono and Delano to end the week, along with Breck shutout loss previously, show they still have some work to do to break into the Top Ten of Class A. Will leave them here for now based on their overall resume, and they will take the week off before hosting their annual holiday classic.
13. Monticello (3-2-2)
Past Week Results: W 8-1 Princeton, W 3-0 Buffalo
Upcoming Schedule: 12/23 @ Little Falls
The Moose had a positive week, beating up a section team in Princeton before collecting a quality win over AA Buffalo, which was coming off beating Benilde. This team isn’t going to run with high-end, talented teams like Hibbing or Warroad, but they can give just about anyone else a pretty good game because of the structure they play. They will look to continue their recent stretch of good play this week when they travel to Little Falls to take on a struggling Flyers crew.
14. Chisago Lakes (6-2-2)
Past Week Results: W 3-0 Hastings, W 7-4 Becker/Big Lake
Upcoming Schedule: Idle
The Wildcats took care of 4A Hastings and then outscored Becker/Big Lake this past week, which keeps them inside the Top 15. They’ve got a full week off now to prepare for battles with AA Totino-Grace, and then a Northern Lakes game, which will offer some intrigue for these rankings. Besides the Cambridge debacle, they have taken care of business so far, and the ties vs Orono and Monticello show they can play with Top 15 teams in Class A.
15. Luverne (10-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-1 Windom, W 8-4 New Ulm, W 4-3 OT Dodge County
Upcoming Schedule: 12/22 @ Albert Lea
Roll Cards Roll just continues to win hockey games at the moment. While this week was not their most impressive one, they were able to pick up two Section 3A wins over Windom and New Ulm, and they found a way to avoid the upset when they came back on Dodge County to end the week. They move into the Top 15 for the first time this week, and they will look to stay unbeaten when they take on Albert Lea in their only action of the week.
16. Rochester Lourdes (6-2-1)
Past Week Results: T 2-2 OT #6 Blake
Upcoming Schedule: Idle
Lourdes showed again this week that this is a team that should be taken seriously down South. The Eagles play great team defense as they have not allowed more than two goals in a game this year since the opening loss to Luverne. They followed that similar formula when they took on Blake this week, as they held the high-scoring Bears in check en route to a good tie. Now they will take a week off before they make the long trek up north to play in the Bill McGann Holiday Classic in Proctor.
17. Detroit Lakes (5-4-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 Alexandria, W 8-4 St Cloud Public, W 3-2 OT #18 East Grand Forks
Upcoming Schedule: 12/26 vs #7 Northfield
The Lakers make their way back into the Top 20 of these rankings. It was a slower start to the week as they lost their first Minnesota game to Alexandria. However, they responded in a big way as they went on the road and torched a decent AA St Cloud Public team before returning home for a huge win over 8A East Grand Forks in overtime. They will look to continue to rise this week as they have a big game vs Northfield, which will be important for these rankings.
18. East Grand Forks (2-6-1)
Past Week Results: L 0-2 Bemidji, L 2-3 OT #17 Detroit Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 12/22 @ Grand Forks Central
The Greenwave continued their nosedive in the rankings this week as they continue to have a brutal start to the year. The loss to Bemidji hurts, but to follow that up by dropping a Section game to Detroit Lakes in overtime could come back to haunt them come seeding time. Luckily, they will get a rematch with the Lakers later in the year, and they will get to play a North Dakota team this week as they remain winless against Minnesota competition.
19. Northern Lakes (5-2-1)
Past Week Results: W 9-0 Little Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 12/27 vs #7 Northfield
The Lightning’s thrashing of Little Falls is another encouraging sign for Northern Lakes during their recent hot streak, putting the section on notice and suggesting that this team is not only finding its structure again but this year's team will have some more explosive scoring to go with the great goaltending. Next week’s matchup with top ten Northfield is looking juicy now for Class A positioning, as it gives this group their first real chance to make a serious jump up in the rankings.
20. Waseca (5-4-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-0 #7 Northfield, L 4-6 Farmington
Upcoming Schedule: 12/27 vs #22 Minneapolis
Waseca had a tough week, as while they played very competitively in losses to Northfield and Farmington, there were still losses nonetheless, and they are mounting of late as they have now lost three games in a row. Still going to leave them in the Top 20 for now, as they showed vs the Raiders and Tigers this week, they can play with tough competition. To stick here, though, they will need a win the coming week as they play the team just below them in the rankings in Minneapolis.
Next Five Notable Teams
St Louis Park (4-5-0)
The Orioles had a .500 week that saw them get blitzed by AA Holy Angels before recovering to take down AA Chaska to end the week. Very hard at the moment to get a true read on this team, as they have literally only played one Class A team, a game they got routed by Blake. The big concern here is team defense, as they are giving on average more than six goals a game. They will need to fix that as the calendar turns to the new year, and this week is a must-win vs. 2A Providence Academy.
Minneapolis (5-4-0)
The 612 crew suffered their first bad loss of the year as they dropped one to AA Two Rivers, which raises some red flags here. They did rebound to take care of Osseo to end the week, but they really don't have any good wins, and this ranking is more built on their previous season's prestige. Will leave them in the Top 25 for now and see how they do vs two Top 20 teams in Orono and Waseca this upcoming week.
International Falls (6-0-1)
The Broncos had their first slip up of the year as they were unable to beat their Canadian rivals Fort Frances in the battle for “The Fish” as they had to settle for a tie in a game they heavily outshot the Muskies. Due to some scheduling changes they wont get a rematch as they dropped the second game with them in their holiday classic and added a good one vs Northern Lakes. Now this week they will rest as they wait to host their annual Winternational Falls Holiday Classic.
Crookston (6-0-1)
The Pirates continue to win hockey games up north as they dispatched of a struggling Princeton group this week to stay unbeaten for now. This coming week is a busy one, and they start it with a huge Section 8A game vs Thief River Falls. If they can win that one, they would put themselves in the driving seat for a Section Quarterfinal home playoff game. They then finish the week playing in the Ralph Engelstad Hockey Classic.
Irondale (5-0-1)
The Knights get some love this week as they are one of only five teams that remain unbeaten within Class A. They were able to pick up two more Section 4A wins this past week over Osseo and St Paul as they work their way up the section standings. Nothing flashy here, just winning the game they should, and this week they take on Two River club, which is probably their best test of the year to date.
