A Rankings for 1/4/26

Post by ClassAGuy »

The holiday tourney chaos is over, and we head into 2026! The Moose have made a charge but otherwise the top tier continued to solidify itself, and this upcoming week is full of Top 20 Class A Matchups! Week #7 Rankings below:

1. Hermantown (11-0-2)
Past Week Results: W 5-3 Eden Prairie
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 @ #25 Proctor, 1/8 @ #13 St Cloud Cathedral, 1/10 vs #4 Warroad
The Hawks were able to stay unbeaten this week and continue their impressive start to the season when they hosted Eden Prairie for the first-ever game in the Northstar Ford Arena. They opened the new rink doing what they normally do, and that is winning hockey games. Now we get to see Hermantown in the Class A portion of their schedule as they will take on three Top 25 A teams this week, with the biggest matchup being the annual clash with Warroad, which will then lead into the highly anticipated game vs Hibbing the following week.

2. Hibbing/Chisholm (11-1-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 OT Wayzata
Upcoming Schedule: 1/8 @ #14 Northern Lakes, 1/9 vs #24 International Falls
Hibbing picked up one of their better wins of the year this week when they took down Wayzata in overtime. The Bluejackets were able to show they can grind with the likes of a Lake Conference team, which is a good win anytime, regardless of class, and will go a long way as they gear up for a playoff run. They were able to take some body blows from the Trojans and find a way in the extra session. Now they have two games they should win, but cannot overlook, as the big matchup with the Hawks looms.

3. Delano (9-3-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 #11 Breck
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 vs Hutchinson, 1/8 vs #9 Mahtomedi, 1/10 @ Holy Family
Delano continues to find a way to win big Class A games, as they were able to take down Breck at home this week for a critical Section 2A win. The Tigers only have one loss in Class A to date and that was against the top-ranked Hawks, and they have really taken care of business with everyone else. This week will be another challenging one, as after taking on winless Hutchinson, they have a huge match-up with Mahtomedi before traveling to Holy Family, a place they rarely win.

4. Warroad (10-3-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-4 Grand Forks Red River (ND), W 4-0 Grand Forks Central (ND), W 7-2 Notre Dame (Conn.)
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 @ Roseau, 1/9 @ #8 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, 1/10 @ #1 Hermantown
The Warriors looked like a team that had not played in nearly two weeks when they opened with a dud vs Grand Forks Red River. To their credit, they did rebound well as they shutout the better of the two Grand Forks schools the next night and then breezed past their friends from Connecticut. Now they have a huge week awaiting them as they have an annual battle with rival Roseau before a tough trip into 7A country, where they will take on Top Ten Cloquet/Esko/Carlton and top-ranked Hermantown.

5. Sartell (10-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-1 #10 Blake, W 4-1 Holy Family, L 2-3 Andover, W 2-1 Buffalo
Upcoming Schedule: 1/8 @ Alexandria
The Sabres won two good, close games with Blake and Holy Family before succumbing to Andover in the Holiday Classic in the Park; they were then able to go on the road and take down Buffalo to end a good week. Overall, there is a lot to like about Sartell. They are deep, and this past week saw them take their defensive effort up a notch. They and Warroad have identical resumes, but the Warriors beating Bemidji, whom the Sabres didn't, and staying competitive with the Spuds, which Sartell could not, will give the Black and Gold a very slim edge for now. Just one game this week vs CLC rival Alexandria.

6. Northfield (9-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-4 New Prague
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 @ #9 Mahtomedi, 1/8 vs Rochester Century/JM, 1/10 @ Owatonna
Northfield just continued their winning ways this week when they took down New Prague to continue their hot start to the year. The Raiders don't always make it look pretty, but they have found ways to win and move to the highest place they have in the Class A Rankings in a long time. They now have a significant challenge to begin this upcoming week as they travel to play a very good Mahtomedi team before finishing the week with some more Big Nine Conference games.

7. Monticello (8-2-2)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 Mankato East, W 7-3 #16 Luverne, W 1-0 #8 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, W 3-2 OT Cambridge/Isanti
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 @ #12 Orono, 1/8 vs Becker/Big Lake, 1/10 vs #13 St Cloud Cathedral
The Moose were one of the big risers in Holiday Tourney play with three wins. Two coming against teams in the Top 15 range when they took down Luverne and CEC. They then won their 7th straight game to end the week, but it was not a great showing as they had to survive a serious scare from Cambridge. Regardless, they are stacking wins at the moment, and they jump back into the Top 10. This week will test their new ranking as they have games with Orono, who is much better than their record, and also a big matchup with 5A rival Cathedral, with the #1 seed on the line.

8. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (7-7-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-2 #16 Luverne, W 7-0 St Cloud Public, L 0-1 #7 Monticello
Upcoming Schedule: 1/8 @ Duluth Marshall, 1/9 vs #4 Warroad
The Lumberjacks had a good start to their holiday tournament week with wins over Luverne and St. Cloud Public, but they couldn’t find a goal in the finale vs Monticello and dropped back to .500. As with so many teams around this part of the rankings, that just seems to hold the line, based on overall Class A resumes. They have a very tough week ahead as they go on the road to take on a talented Toppers team before hosting Class A power Warroad.

9. Mahtomedi (5-6-2)
Past Week Results: W 7-4 #12 Orono, L 0-4 Minnetonka
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 vs #6 Northfield, 1/8 @ #3 Delano, 1/10 @ Tartan/North
The Zephyrs won the most important game of the week, as these rankings are concerned, as they blitzed Orono on the road and built a big lead early, and cruised to a good Class A win. They did drop their other game of the week, but this is no shame in losing to an excellent Skippers squad, and the result really doesn't impact their standing here. This week, though, will give Mahtomedi a big chance to move up as they play two Top 10 teams in Northfield & Delano before finishing with a Section 4A game at Tartan/North. We will see how much the difficult schedule they have been playing will pay off in some critical ranking games this upcoming week.

10. Blake (8-5-1)
Past Week Results: L 1-3 #5 Sartell, L 2-4 Chanhassen, L 2-4 Holy Family
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 vs #19 Minneapolis, 1/8 @ Providence Academy, 1/10 @ #11 Breck
The Bears fought well against Sartell, Chanhassen and Holy Family, but could not come away with a win. Their only Class A loss on the year is to the Sabres, and this group doesn’t feel like a team that is far off from making a run in Class A, but close losses only go so far in the rankings, and they are on a four game winless streak which drops them down this week. Huge week ahead as they get back into Section 2A play if they get the three game sweep they will lock up a top two seed.

11. Breck (8-4-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-1 Hutchinson, L 3-4 #3 Delano
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 vs Providence Academy, 1/10 vs #10 Blake
Breck took care of business to begin the week when they knocked off winless Hutchinson for a section win with ease. They then put up a valiant effort vs Delano to end the week, as they were missing one of the leading scorers due to the flu, and they battled the Tigers but came up just short. They still lack that big win and have the head-to-head loss to Blake to keep them just outside the Top 10 for now, but that can change this week as they get the rematch with their arch-rival Bears at home.

12. Orono (3-6-3)
Past Week Results: L 4-7 #9 Mahtomedi, T 2-2 OT Providence Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 vs #11 Monticello, 1/10 @ Westonka
The Spartans continued their inconsistent play this week as they got ambushed early at home vs Mahotmedi and were never able to get into the game in a loss to begin the week. They followed that up with a slow start vs Providence Academy and had to settle for a tie, which doesn't kill their section standing but doesn't really help it either. They still own wins over Cathedral & Breck and ties with Chisago Lakes & EGF, but they need to get going here soon. Big opportunity vs Top 10 Monticello this week and then a must-win section game vs Westonka.

13. St Cloud Cathedral (6-7-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-1 Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, W 5-0 Sauk Rapids-Rice, L 3-4 St Cloud Public
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 vs #14 Northern Lakes, 1/8 vs #1 Hermantown , 1/10 @ #7 Monticello
The Crusaders eased past 5A opponents Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato and Sauk Rapids-Rice to open their holiday tourney play, but they let a win slip out of their fingers against rival St Cloud Public, which is their first loss to them in years, and left the week on a sour note. It won't get any easier for Cathedral this week as they have three ranked Class A games hosting Northern Lakes and top-ranked Hermantown before the big trip to Monticello for the #1 seed in Section 5A.

14. Northern Lakes (6-4-1)
Past Week Results: L 1-4 Hudson (Wis), W 6-5 #15 Chisago Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 @ #13 St Cloud Cathedral, 1/8 vs #2 Hibbing/Chisholm, 1/10 @ Fergus Falls
The Lightning started the week by falling to Wisconsin power Hudson, where their penalty issues showed up again. It looked like more penalty issues would cost them vs Chisago Lakes, but to their credit, they dug out of a two-goal third-period deficit on the road for their best win of the season so far. They will hope to ride that momentum into this week as it's a tough one with games vs ranked Cathedral and Hibbing before an end-of-the-weekend showdown at 6A rival Fergus Falls.

15. Chisago Lakes (6-4-2)
Past Week Results: L 1-3 Totino-Grace, L 5-6 #14 Northern Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/5 @ Pine City Area, 1/8 vs Princeton, 1/10 @ St Paul
The Wildcats had a tough holiday break as they went winless in two contests, dropping a tough one on the road to Totino Grace before losing a wild one at home to Northern Lakes in a game that saw them squander a two-goal third-period lead. Will still slot them here for now, as they do have ties with Monticello and Orono, but they need to get back on track this week, as they have three winnable games, with the important being the section match-up with St Paul at the end of the week.

16. Luverne (13-2-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-6 #8 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, L 3-7 #7 Monticello. W 3-1 LDC, W 5-2 Mankato East
Upcoming Schedule: 1/10 vs Minnesota River
Roll Cards Roll fell from the unbeaten ranks when they were served a bit of a reality check as they were dispatched by two Top 10 teams in Cloquet/Esko/Carlton & Monticello to begin their busy week. Luverne responded well, as they were able to beat a decent Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato crew and then picked up the most important win of the week, a Section 3A victory over Mankato East. They are now in full control of the #1 seed and will have a chance to go unbeaten with the remainder of their schedule. However, one of the toughest teams left they face this week when they host Minnesota River.

17. Rochester Lourdes (9-3-1)
Past Week Results: W 6-0 Red Lake Falls, W 4 -3 OT Somerset (Wis.), L 2-3 #25 Proctor, W 5-0 Southwest Christian/Richfield
Upcoming Schedule: 1/8 @ Owatonna, 1/10 @ Dodge County
Just when it felt like time to start singing Lourdes’s praises, they went and lost to Proctor. To their credit, they did rebound and shut out Southwest Christian/Richfield. The competition hasn’t been world-class, but there is a good tie with Blake in there. I’m not going to whack them too hard, and I love their team defense as they are only giving up 1.38 goals a game. The key for the Eagles will be finding more scoring as they look ahead, and they have winnable games with Owatonna and Dodge County this coming week.

18. East Grand Forks (5-7-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-4 Fargo Davies (ND), W 5-1 #21 Detroit Lakes, W 5-3 Grand Forks Red River
Upcoming Schedule: 1/8 @ Crookston, 1/9 @ Bemidji
The Greenwave appears to be right on track to make their annual second-half push after another dreadful start this year. East Side was able to pick up three wins this week by taking down Fargo Davies and then getting the critical second 8A win of the season split with Detroit Lakes, which was also their first Minnesota win. They capped off a great week by getting the season sweep of Grand Forks Red River, which will give them a chance at the Gambucci Cup. They will look to continue their push this week when they hit the road to take on 8A Crookston, and then will look for revenge against Bemidji.

19. Minneapolis (6-5-1)
Past Week Results: L 4-7 Armstrong/Cooper
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 @ #10 Blake, 1/8 @ Dodge County, 1/10 @ Southwest Christian/Richfield
The 612 crew dropped an ugly one against Armstrong/Cooper, which again raises questions about this team. However, they are currently (6-1-1) still vs Class A competition, and their head-to-head win over Orono and tie with Waseca will leave them here for now. We should find out more about this team this week, as they have two Section 2A games vs Blake & Southwest Christian/Richfield, and also a matchup with an improving Dodge County team.

20. Waseca (6-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-2 Southwest Christian/Richfield
Upcoming Schedule: 1/6 @ New Ulm, 1/8 @ Redwood Valley
The Bluejays were able to get back into the Top 20 this week as they broke their four-game winless streak and took down Southwest Christian/Richfield at home. Waseca has loads of potential and talent; they just have not quite put it together yet, but looking at their next stretch of games, it feels like this team could get on a run. They will hope that starts this week when they hit the road for a pair of Big South Conference Games against New Ulm and Redwood Valley.

Next Five Notable Teams
Detroit Lakes (6-7-0)

The Lakers had a tough start to the week as the offensive struggles returned when they fell to West Fargo Sheyenne (N.D.) in a game where they could not find the tying goal late. Then they went on the road and dropped the critical second end-of-the-season split with East Grand Forks, which will likely cost them the higher seed come playoffs. They were able to break their North Dakota curse at the end of the week by beating Fargo Davies on the road. Things lighten up a bit this week as they have two winnable CLC games on the docket.

St Louis Park (6-7-0)
The Orioles had an interesting week as they took fourth place in the SSP Premier, where they lost to both Farmington and Woodbury to begin the week. They then had way more of a struggle than they should have with a winless Hutchinson team, but they did pull out the Section 2A win, literally scoring the game-winning goal at the buzzer. Still not totally sure on this group, but the talent is there, and they will look for another win when they take on a section opponent, Waconia, and before finishing the week with Hopkins.

Mankato West (6-4-1)
The Scarlets had a much more enjoyable trip to Duluth this time around, as a year after having their sticks stolen and being unable to play in the 7th-place game, they had an impressive showing up north. They were able to win a tight contest over previously ranked Irondale, their best Class A win to date, and then went on to win the Heritage Holiday Classic. Now they have a very manageable stretch of games. We could see this young team go on a run.

International Falls (8-0-2)
The Broncos started the week on a great note as they were able to win the Winternational Falls Holiday Classic to remain unbeaten on the year. However, they were unable to pull out the needed win vs Proctor at home to end the week. While a tie is not a terrible result, any hope at a top-three seed seems out the window now, and the vote for who will get the 4 or 5 seed in 7A is going to be interesting, as home ice will be big in the Quarterfinal round. This week, they will get to test themselves against one of Class A’s best teams when they travel to Hibbing on Friday night.

Proctor (7-6-1)
The Rails were another big Holiday week winner as this young team enters the Top 25 conversation for the first time this winter. Proctor is now on a 5-game unbeaten streak, and they were able to win their Bill McGann Holiday Classic, which included a nice upset over Top 20 Rochester Lourdes. They followed that up with a very important tie vs International Falls, which will make the seeding for the 4 vs 5 game in 7A an intriguing one for home ice. This week, they have the mighty Hawks and a struggling Little Falls as they look to continue to improve.

Some Notes from (1/8/26) in Class A
- #9 Mahtomedi beats #3 Delano 5-3 Final... Physical game throughout Zephs trailed heading into the 3rd period but found a way for a big road win

- #1 Hemantown holds off #13 St Cloud Cathedral 2-1 Final... It was not an inspiring performance by the Hawks again... Something is a bit off

- #2 Hibbing/Chisholm takes down #14 Northern Lakes 4-1 Final... Was surprising to see this game tied 1-1 in the 3rd period but the Bluejackets found a way to pull away late.

Illness? It is that time of year where all the "bugs" are making their way around the locker rooms. I know my son's youth team has finally gotten back to a full squad after about four weeks of stuff making the rounds.

Some Notes from (1/10/26) in Class A
- #2 Hibbing/Chisholm hands #24 International Falls their 1st loss with a 4-2 win... Hibbing controlled the pace all night but the Broncos battled to hang around. We will have a new #1 on Sunday in Class A.

- #8 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton upsets Warroad 1-0 Final.... The Jacks are a nightmare team to face phsyical and structured. Man, it's 7A fun!
