A Rankings for 1/18/26

Post by ClassAGuy »

The Hawks soar back into the top spot this week, and the rest of the Top 10 solidified itself and don’t look now but here come the Defending Champs making their annual 2nd half push. Week #9 Rankings Below:

1. Hermantown (13-2-3)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 #2 Hibbing/Chisholm, L 1-2 OT Shakopee
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs Superior (Wis), 1/24 vs #5 Mahtomedi
The Hawks move back into their customary top spot in the Class A rankings after they were able to win a great game over Hibbing/Chisholm to begin the week in the big #1 vs #2 matchup. They did go on the road late in the week and fell in overtime to a high-quality Shakopee team, which has no bearing on these rankings. Now they are back home this week as they host a team from across the border before having a very intriguing matchup with a red-hot Zephyrs crew in what should be a great Class A game

2. Hibbing/Chisholm (14-2-1)
Past Week Results: L 1-2 #1 Hermantown, W 5-4 #21 Orono
Upcoming Schedule: 1/19 vs Duluth Marshall, 1/23 @ #11 East Grand Forks, 1/24 @ #4 Warroad
Hibbing dropped a tough one to the Hawks in the big #1 vs #2 matchup in a game that showed they and Hermantown are very even, but moving forward, keeping emotions in check will be key. It was a little concerning to see them give up the lead at home and find themselves in a scary spot vs Orono. To their credit, though they got the win and that is important to be able win games even on nights you don't have your A game. This week is one of their more challenging ones of the year, as they have a Monday game vs the talented Toppers and then a trip into Section 8A country. .

3. Sartell (13-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-0 St Cloud Public, W 7-2 River Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 @ Brainerd, 1/22 vs #22 Detroit Lakes, 1/23 vs Alexandria
The Sabres continued to just march along within their Conference schedule this week as they picked up two more wins over local rivals St Cloud Public and River Lakes without much difficulty. Sartell is now the lone remaining team without a loss vs Class A competition, and they have won four straight since the start of 2026. More CLC action this week with their more winnable games, but the Detroit Lakes game does offer some intrigue, as they look to close in on their fifth straight Conference title.

4. Warroad (12-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 7-4 #22 Detroit Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 @ Crookston, 1/22 vs Roseau, 1/24 vs #2 Hibbing/Chisholm
Warroad went on the road in their only action of the week and picked up a good section win as they handled their business over Detroit Lakes. The win is a big step toward locking up the #1 seed for the Warriors, who do still have 2nd round matchups with TRF and EGF yet. Looking ahead to next week, it's a busy and important one. A section matchup with Crookston, a rematch with their rival, the Rams, and a visit from Hibbing to give this group a chance to move up in the rankings.

5. Mahtomedi (10-6-2)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 Academy of Holy Angels, W 5-1 South St Paul
Upcoming Schedule: 1/22 vs St Thomas Academy, 1/24 @ #1 Hermantown
The Zephyrs had another strong week as they have now won five games in a row and seven of their last eight overall. They picked up an impressive road win over Holy Angels to start the week and then finished with a 4A section win over South St Paul. Mahtomedi looks every bit the part of a Class A Title contender, and this week they face two stiff tests as they get rematches with St Thomas Academy and before having another shot at Class A’s #1 team, Hermantown.

6. Delano (11-4-1)
Past Week Results: Idle
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 @ #20 Minneapolis, 1/22 @ Westonka
Delano ended up taking the week off as they had their only scheduled game of the week postponed due to weather. Might not be the worst thing in the world for the Tigers as they were able to reevaluate their goaltending situation in the wake of losing both their 1st and 2nd string goalies to injury. They have an important stretch coming up now, as they have three important Section 2A games in a row to lock down the #1 seed. This coming week, they will take on Minneapolis and Westonka.

7. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (10-8-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-4 Grand Rapids, W 7-2 #21 Orono
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs Rock Ridge, 1/22 @ Duluth Denfeld
The Lumberjacks had another good week overall as they did drop a tough one to Rapids to start the week, but they came back strong at the end of the week when they hosted Orono, as they just wore the Spartans down for another nice Top 25 Class A win. There is nothing fancy about Cloquet/Esko/Carlton as they won’t overwhelm you with speed and skill, but they will play a very physical brand of hockey and take away time and space as well as any team at the small school level. This week, they will take on two 7AA opponents when they battle Rock Ridge and Denfeld.

8. Northfield (13-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-0 Austin, W 9-1 Red Wing
Upcoming Schedule: 1/22 @ #10 Breck
Northfield just continued their dominant run in the southern half of the state this week as they took out two more Big 9 teams in Austin and Red Wing, and the Raiders appear to be well on their way to another Conference Title. Now they have another good test to get them out of their southern bubble, as they will head to resurgent Breck for a very intriguing Top 10 showdown this week that will tell us a lot about two teams in this portion of the rankings.

9. Blake (12-5-2)
Past Week Results: W 11-0 St Paul Academy, W 6-3 Providence Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 1/24 @ #17 Waseca
The Bears continued their good stretch of play as they picked up two more conference wins this week over St Paul Academy and Providence Academy, which allowed them to lock up the IMAC Title again this year. Blake, it should be noted, still controls their destiny for the top seed in Section 2A, but they will have a shot at that next week. This coming week just offers an intriguing matchup vs a Top 20 Waseca crew who just beat Lourdes, whom the Bears tied earlier this year.

10. Breck (12-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 5-2 Southwest Christian/Richfield, W 3-2 Providence Academy, W 4-2 Gentry Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 @ St Paul Academy, 1/22 vs #8 Northfield
Breck just continues to pile up wins as they were able to solidify their Top 5 seed spot with section wins over Southwest Christian/Richfield and a sweep of Providence Academy. They rounded out a nice week overall by taking care of a sneaky good Gentry team, and the Mustangs are playing great hockey of late. Now they will have a chance to move up these rankings this week when they host Northfield in what should be a great barometer game for both crews.

11. East Grand Forks (8-8-1)
Past Week Results: W 8-2 Roseau, W 6-1 #12 St Cloud Cathedral
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs Thief River Falls, 1/23 vs #2 Hibbing/Chisholm
Here comes the Greenwave? Suddenly, after a dreadful (2-7-1) start, the Defending Champs are back to .500 and they had themselves an impressive week to climb back up just outside the Top Ten. They opened by routing the Rams, and the offensive explosion didn't stop there as they went down to Cathedral over the weekend and took out the Crusaders in the Title Game Rematch. Now they host a pair of good games with a section contest vs Thief River Falls before a rematch with Hibbing/Chisholm of the Tourney Classic from a year ago.

12. St Cloud Cathedral (8-9-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-1 #14 Northern Lakes, L 1-6 #11 East Grand Forks
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 @ Little Falls, 1/22 @ Princeton
The Crusaders had a decent week as they were able to take down a strong Northern Lakes team at home on their Senior Night. However, they were unable to get revenge against East Grand Forks as the Greenwave were able to overwhelm the young Crusaders to show there is still room for this team to grow. No shame in the loss, and they will look to be the heavy favorite this week with a conference game at Little Falls and a section game vs Princeton, both of which they should win.

13. Monticello (11-3-3)
Past Week Results: W 5-2 Pine City Area, T 4-4 OT #15 Chisago Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 @ Providence Academy, 1/23 vs River Lakes
The Moose did what they needed to do vs Pine City to begin the week as they picked up the Section 5A sweep of the Dragons. However, they were unable to hold a three-goal lead in the 2nd period to end the week and had to settle for a tie with Chisago Lakes for the second time this year. Overall, not a bad or great week, and they held steady at these parts of the rankings. This week, they have a dangerous trip to Providence Academy who is very good on their home ice, before hosting a section matchup with a gritty River Lakes crew.

14. Northern Lakes (9-6-1)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 OT Little Falls, L 1-3 #12 St Cloud Cathedral, W 6-5 #16 Proctor
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs Bemidji, 1/24 vs #24 International Falls
The Lightning continued to play an exciting brand of hockey for their fans this week. They got a scare from Little Falls, who they hammered early this year to begin the week. To their credit, they found a way to win, and they played right with Cathedral in a tight loss. They then went on the road and played with a shorthanded lineup and won a wild game over the hot Proctor crew to solidify their spot in the Top 15. Now they have a visit from Bemidji before a very interesting matchup with high-scoring Broncos from The Falls.

15. Chisago Lakes (10-4-3)
Past Week Results: W 5-1 Cambridge-Isanti, T 4-4 OT #13 Monticello
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs Simley, 1/22 vs Pine City Area, 1/24 @ Two Rivers
The Wildcats were able to avenge their worst loss of the season when they took care of business vs Cambridge-Isanti. They, however, had to settle for another tie vs Monticello, and while they did show some good character in battling back, the result, due to the aforementioned Cambridge blunder, most likely cost them a chance at the Conference title. This week is a busy one as they have three winnable games on tap, with the most important being the Section 4A matchup vs Simley.

16. Proctor (10-8-1)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 Superior (Wis.), L 0-3 Rock Ridge, L 5-6 #14 Northern Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs Ely, 1/22 vs Duluth Marshall
The Rails' recent momentum got derailed this week, after a nice win across the border, they lost two straight games, being shutout by Rock Ridge before losing a wild contest to a solid Northern Lakes crew. This is still a very young team, and the ups and downs of Varsity hockey, especially in late January, the dog days of the season, are totally expected. They will look to find their winning way again this week as they host a section opponent in Eley before a good test with Duluth Marshall.

17. Waseca (11-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-2 Minnesota River, W 5-2 #19 Rochester Lourdes, W 5-4 OT #18 Luverne
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs Dodge County, 1/23 vs Windom, 1/24 vs #9 Blake
The Bluejays finally broke through this week and picked up not only one but two big wins in a row. Taking down Lourdes should give them the #2 seed in Section 1A, assuming they take care of Dodge County this week, and they then get some revenge over Luverne to put them in line for the Conference Title Game. Now they move back up in these rankings, and they will look to stay hot this week, which is a busy one as the matchup vs Blake at the end of the week presents more opportunities to continue their climb.

18. Luverne (15-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 9-1 Windom, L 4-5 OT #17 Waseca
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 @ Fairmont, 1/22 vs Redwood Valley
Roll Cards Roll were able to wax Windom on the road to start the week, but they then took their first Conference loss in two years when they fell on the road at Waseca in overtime. They will get one more shot at the Bluejays, as it was revealed this week that the Big South Conference will be having a Championship League game, allowing Luverne to play a 26th game. This week will be an easy one, as they have two struggling Section 3A teams that they should put big numbers on.

19. Rochester Lourdes (11-4-1)
Past Week Results: L 2-5 #17 Waseca
Upcoming Schedule: 1/22 @ Winona
Lourdes stumbled in their only matchup of the week as they went on the road and lost their defensive structure when they fell to Section 1A rival Waseca. The loss most likely locks the Eagles into a #3 seed, and they will more than likely get another swing at the Bluejays come playoff time. They will look to get back on track this week as they have just one game, not shockingly on the road, as they take on Winona.

20. Minneapolis (8-6-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 Austin
Upcoming Schedule: 1/20 vs #6 Delano, 1/22 @ Eagan, 1/24 @ Westonka
The 612 crew was able to push aside any outside distractions of non-hockey-related things happening and get back on the ice at home to pick up a win in their only game of the week vs Austin. As noted, this is a tough team to read, but they currently hold their fate for the #3 seed in Section 2A. They can make a push beyond that week as they get a matchup with Delano, a section opponent whom they have had plenty of recent success over.

Next Five Notable Teams
Orono (5-9-3)

Orono is one of the toughest Class A teams in the state to rank. They are currently (3-7-1) in their 11 games, but they do play one of the toughest Class A Schedules in the state. They showed the good and bad this weekend as they got blown out by CEC, but then nearly upset Hibbing the following day. The talent is still here, but for now, I am going to place them just outside the Top 20 and honor the head-to-head loss to Minneapolis. They continue their gauntlet of a schedule as they enter Metro West Conference play with a game vs Benilde as their only action of the week.

Detroit Lakes (9-8-0)
The Lakers were able to get an important section win over Red Lake Falls on the road to begin the week, though it was not easy, as they had to scrap and claw for the win. They then hosted the section top team in Warroad to end the week, and they dug themselves an early hole. They were able to battle back, but the game serves as some important lessons learned if they get the opportunity to play them again, come section time. This week is full of CLC action, with the game against highly ranked Sartell being the highlight.

Mankato West (11-4-2)
The Scarlets continued their win streak as they have now won eight straight games, dispatching two Big Nine Conference teams this week. The win over inner-city rival Mankato East was the bigger of the two wins as they look to position themselves for a top seed in Section 3A. This is a young and growing team that continues to push upwards, and they have a great test with Farmington before a big section game vs Minnesota River on the docket this week.

International Falls (12-1-2)
The Broncos took care of two Section 7A Opponents in Ely and Greenway, beating them both with ease, which locks them into their #5 seed position. The Falls is a tough group to rank, as while the story is great and they have a tie with #16 Proctor and a tight loss to #2 Hibbing, they just don't have any quality wins. Their best chance to get one of those sought-after big wins is this week as they make a trip to ranked Northern Lakes at the end of the week, offering them a chance to make a statement.

St Louis Park (8-9-0)
The Orioles had themselves a tough week, as there is no shame in losing to Chanhassen, but the one-sided loss to New Prague is not inspiring any kind of confidence in this group. They hold the final spot in the rankings due to the team right beneath them, stumbling as well this week. However, St Louis Park won't have an easy path to get back on track as they have more Metro West Conference action this week vs Jefferson and a rematch against Chanhassen.

Some Notes from (1/20/26) in Class A
- #6 Delano takes out #20 MPLS tonight 6-1 Final.. Big news here is that starter Evan Geyen is back after missing every game since the opener due to injury.

-#17 Waseca ties Dodge County 3-3 OT/Final... Just when I am ready to buy stock in the Bluejays they blow a 3-0 lead at hoem and tie the Wildcats.

Upset of the Night
Providence Academy drilled #13 Monticello 7-2 Final... Lions are a #8 or #9 seed in 2A... That section is crazy deep!
