1AA is the biggest and longest running joke in HS hockey.

The oldtimers here remember a day when the section final loser in certain sections got sent to play the winner of Section 1 for a chance at state.

Enjoy the rankings every week. I think Maple Grove deserved to drop after the last week, but 5 spots is a bit much. I don’t see how they can be behind Wayzata, who they’ve beaten twice and have a better record than playing the same tough schedule. Also, Wayzata has zero signature wins. Maple Grove has a couple. Throw out their win over Edina in Turkey Trot, and MG still has win over STA. There is also no way Holy Angels, which plays a soft schedule and has beaten absolutely nobody, should be ranked higher than Maple Grove. I don’t think Maple Grove is super strong and I agree they’ll have hurdles to jump over to win their section. But there’s no way Wayzata and Holy Angels should be ranked higher than them.

100% Accurate. The obsession with Holy Angels for the last 4-5 years is ridiculous much less just this year. They've had maybe 3 wins of consequence in the last 4 seasons, all which ended with a 2nd round drubbing in sections. Their high rankings year in year out shows clear bias and after this season, the cupboard goes bare.

Some might shrug it off but they just beat Wayzata last night so maybe they heard you....

We had a good ten years of quality representatives from 1AA, only ending fairly recently.

1AA is a joke and has been for quite some time. Can't remember the last truly quality, top 10 rated team came from section 1. A revamp has been needed for quite some time. The cupboard is bare for many years to come at both Lakeville's, Farmington, etc.

Yes, Holy Angels first quality win of the season was last night over Wayzata (who is now just a .500% team). Maple Grove has beaten Wayzata twice this season and just beat Hill Murray today. Again, there is no way Holy Angels should be ranked higher than Maple Grove.

I suppose the format changed over the years, but that's not my understanding. There was a time when regions 1 and 3 did not have any schools with teams. I gather that the regions were the same for all sports. So the region 7 & 8 2nd place would playoff for region 3, and region 4 and 5 2nd place would play for region 1. Fun fact: The highest ever finish for St Paul Harding was when they lost the state final after having lost the region 4 final and coming in through the back door.

Maybe that is how it worked. It was even before my time, so I don't remember it happening, just that I was told it happened. My wife is a Harding grad, so I'm sure knowing they have a 2nd place finish will make her sleep better tonight.

HM and MG was a good game yesterday and my take away was those teams are pretty even. Doesn't move the bar much either way.

I agree EP, having swept MG, should be ranked ahead of MG. But Wayzata (who MG swept and has no signature win) and Holy Angels, who hasn’t beaten anyone, should not be ranked ahead of MG.

Holy Angels has one win against all the teams in Karl’s top 25 this week: 5-2 last night against Elk River. Holy Angels is 0-5 against the rest of the teams they’ve played who are in Karl’s top 25 this week, getting outscored 29-9 in those games. They also lost to Class A Mahtomedi.

Maple Grove is 12-6-2 overall. Their record against teams in Karl’s top 25 this week is 6-5-1. All five of their losses against Karl’s top 25 are to teams Karl has ranked in his top 12 teams this week (their other loss is to Class A #1 Hermantown). MG beat Karl’s #3, STA, and split with Karl’s #4, Edina, losing to Edina 5-4 and beating them 4-3 (yes, this is the Turkey Trot win, so I’m okay discounting it if people want to argue with that). MG beat Wayzata, Karl’s #11 team this week, both times they played them this season.

My argument here is that there is no way Holy Angels should be ranked higher than Maple Grove.

And, given that Wayzata is 10-9-2, Maple Grove is 12-6-2, these two teams play basically the exact same schedule, Wayzata has no signature wins, and Maple Grove won both MG vs Wayzata games this season, there also is no way Wayzata should be ranked higher than MG.

Karl is the GOAT and I agree with his rankings almost all the time. He’s wrong this week, though, on his Maple Grove ranking, given what I’ve outlined above.

Yep, Maple Grove is the first team out of the top 10 in my composite rankings. The top 10 are actually in agreement with Karl's rankings. Wayzata and Farmington are the only other teams receiving top 10 votes (Wayzata #9 in PageStat and Farmington #10 in QRF).
