Great video - featuring one of my favorite goals in Edina history. Marshall Everson jamming the puck through the goalie’s pads as he’s getting pummeled by basically the entire Benilde roster to win in overtime. That was an unreal game. I believe it was the 2008 semis when Edina’s “Fab 5” were juniors. Edina would go on to be shutout by Hill 3-0 in the title game. I think I have selectively blocked out the name of that Hill goaltender. ESPG, Sparlimb, etc. feel free to help me fill in the blanks.

While that Edina group never won the title (you could argue things would’ve been different if Budish hadn’t been injured his entire senior season.) I believe Giles learned many lessons. Most notably, to use his depth. He rode the top two lines hard for that class’ junior and senior seasons. The next year he had a deep team with 4 lines of role players that won it all and the rest is history.

Damn. We really need STP hockey to come back from the ashes. I know the ship has sailed but how much better would this be to see STP vs. Minneapolis, North vs. Metro, Public vs. Private, etc.

I miss these opens and the music videos the schools did in the 80s. Added a little more pizazz to the tourney.

Joe Phillippi was the goalie. I think it was bookend 3-0 shutouts of Lakeville South and Edina and a well played 6-2 win over defending champ Roseau in the semi’s.
