As you read through the presentation; there are no facts that claim not wearing a helmet is a safety issue.

I was not at the meeting but as you read through the presentation, this is an emotional stroll to look at what happens in a few instances. Yes, a terrible accident.

People want to see numbers that justify that this is a serious concern. Unfortunately, MNHOCKEY and the "Helmet gang" can not provide research into the potential problem. On the youth forum, I did some hypothetical numbers. The percentage is so low and ridiculus ( I believe .002% per on ice occurance) that I can not believe MNHOCKEY is delaing with the issue.

Insurance issue? It would not matter, USA Hockeys' insurance carrier does not process or pay out claims from on ice injuries in a USA Hockey event.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... troll21 at: 2/8/06 3:15 pm

If that is true, I wonder what the USA Hockey insurance covers? Over the years, I have heard so many rule changes being made and forms being filled out -- all based upon some unknown insurance coverage that USA Hockey provides. I assumed all the money collected at the least paid for a very generous insurance policy. Sounds like it goes to administrators to administrate, create forms to fill out and change rules.

I was on the District 6 Board for MN Hockey and we had a gentleman in D-6 who was a Don Quixote against the windmill of insurance for MN & USA Hockey. It was determined that insurance could be purchased at a lower cost separately from USA Hockey, so Edina's mite program became independent of MN & USA Hockey. I've been off that board but I would not be surprised if other large mite programs have dropped out of MN Hockey because of this.

When has the insurance, that every member of USA Hockey is required to buy as part of the registration fee, ever paid out? Did any of the MN/USA coaches or players who sustained injuries on ice ever get a benefit from this insurance? What is this insurance covering anyhow?

I don't have any records, but I'd be happy to change my tune about it if the money that has been paid over the years for this insurance has been worth it. So I wonder about this move for helmets. Will the insurance rate go down because the family of 1 coach every 3 years will not be making a huge claim? Let us see some facts please.

The USA hockey insurance coverage is probably used more than you think. We took our daughter in to the hospital recently because she was hit in the head by a puck while on the ice with her team (with helmet on) and had concussion symptoms. She had enough symptoms that they did a CT scan, so we will get a hefty bill for that visit.

I have checked with our association as to what USA hockey covers and below is what I found out. Since our family's medical insurance is 80/20% coverage, when we file the USA Hockey claim it will pay the 20% that is our co-pay. So we will have a small claim, but anytime a kid breaks a leg, collarbone, wrist, whatever (I've seen/heard of all of these this season alone) and they have a co-pay, the USA hockey insurance can kick in.

There are two parts to coverage -the small claims like we will have and the catastrophic ones. If our bills total $2,000 or so from the hospital visit/tests, we will have a co-pay of maybe $400. I won't mind filing that claim with USA Hockey.

From the www.usahockey.com site:

2. What kind of coverage does USAH offer to players if they get hurt? Does this include dental coverage?
USA Hockey offers two (2) kinds of insurance coverage to players who may become injured, while participating in a USAH "sanctioned event". First, we offer a policy of excess medical insurance, subject to policy deductibles, to pay for medical care up to $25,000; this coverage does include limited dental coverage. Second, for those members who are seriously injured, USA Hockey provides a $2,000,000 catastrophic injury medical plan; the "cat med" plan has a $25,000 deductible, which is usually covered by a player's primary insurance, by USAH's excess medical, or by some combination of the two (2) insurance plans.

The "excess medical" coverage is designed to supplement your primary (any other insurance) coverage that you have, and it only pays for treatments AFTER the primary has been used. Once you turn your claim into your primary insurance, you will have no additional deductible [other than whatever the primary charges] from USA Hockey. If you have NO PRIMARY INSURANCE, USA Hockey's coverage can become primary. However, when used as a primary USA Hockey's policy has a $1,000 deductible, which must be satisfied BEFORE it will pay bills.

Here is the link:

<a href="http://www.usahockey.com/usa_hockey/mai ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ihockey at: 2/8/06 9:01 pm

I did not read this entire topic, but I have read everything in the Lets Play Hockey. I believe the rule is for youth hockey, MSHSL and only for "on-ice" activities. Otherwise known as practice and when controlling a scrimmage.

What is the big deal. So you have to wear a helmet, oh well. When you do fall, and everybodies does, your chances of hitting your head on the ice will be higher and you will be safer. I know, you will end up with helmet hair and your date may not like the hair, so what.

I also read where it will cost the associations lots of money. For Gods sake pay for it yourself, most adults work. The associations don't pay for your skates, sharpening or sticks and gloves, do they?

lastly, if a coach refuses and that coach quits. Too bad, find another coach that will abide by the rules and to lead by example....

Sorry or the length....
________________________________
Academy of Holy Angels
2005 GIRLS STATE CHAMPS!
2002 & 2005 BOYS STATE CHAMPS!!
GO STARS!!

It costs $30 per player and $25 per coach. Covers not only players and coaches but also can cover things like spectators hit by pucks too.........

Last time I looked this post was about "coaches" wearing helmets. I'm sure there are other forums for figure skating, fan protection and other issues.

No good ever comes from making insulting remarks. respecting others for thier opinion usually results in better solutions.
