State Tourney Press Release

Voigt / MSHSL<br><br>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<br><br>State Girls’ Hockey Tournament<br><br>Academy of Holy Angels, South St. Paul seek consecutive titles<br>in different classes; two teams making first appearances<br><br>Both 2005 champions — Academy of Holy Angels and South St. Paul — return to defend their titles. However, both will be competing in opposite classes this year. Academy of Holy Angels of Richfield, which won the Class A title last year, will compete in Class AA, and South St. Paul, which won the Class AA title in 2005, will compete in Class A. Warroad in Class A and Coon Rapids in Class AA are the only teams making their first tournament appearances.<br><br>This is the 12th state tournament and will be played in two classes for the fifth time, with eight teams in Class AA and four teams in Class A. Only four teams competed in the 1995 and 1996 state tournaments, and eight teams competed from 1997 through 2001. Two hundred thirty-three schools comprised the 127 teams that competed during the 2005-06 regular season. The 2007 state tournament will feature two eight-team classes.<br><br>This is the first year that all championship rounds of the tournament will be played at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. All Class AA consolation games will be conducted at Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis, where the tournament had been played the past three years.<br><br>Quarterfinal and semifinal game times have also been moved ahead one hour. Afternoon sessions will begin at 11 a.m. instead of noon, and evening sessions will begin at 6 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. The third-place and championship games on Saturday will be played at the same time, 9 a.m. and noon for Class A, and 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. for Class AA.<br><br>Class AA Quarterfinal Highlights<br><br>Rochester Mayo (21-6) vs. Coon Rapids (23-3-2) — 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 23: Rochester Mayo, which includes students from Rochester Lourdes, is making its second consecutive and third overall appearance at the tournament. In 2005 the Spartans lost in the consolation semifinals. The Spartans were ranked No. 19 in this year’s final Let’s Play Hockey poll. During the regular season they lost to fellow tournament qualifier Eden Prairie 4-0. Rochester Mayo credits its success to mental preparation, hard work, and selfless play. Every player scored at least one goal this season, and 10 players scored in double digits. Junior Katie Psimos led the offense with 20 goals and 18 assists. Junior Allie Harwood added 17 goals and led the Spartans with 30 assists. Sophomore goalie Sinead Murphy went 13-3 during the regular season and has a save percentage of 0.88. Rochester Mayo outscored its opponents 119-53 over the course of the regular season. The Coon Rapids Cardinals are making their first tournament appearance. The Cardinals, who were ranked No. 9 in the final poll, did not face any other qualifiers during the regular season. Junior Terra Rasmussen was the top scorer for the Cardinals. She had 23 goals and 28 goals assists during the regular season. Junior Amalee Windmeier and senior Jillian Kobow also added 19 goals apiece for Coon Rapids. Junior goalie Julie Braschayko had a season record of 23-3-2. Her save percentage is 0.92. Coon Rapids did not submit any team statistics.<br><br>Roseville Area (22-6) vs. Academy of Holy Angels, Richfield (22-5-1) — 1:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23: The Raiders of Roseville Area, who were ranked No. 5 in the final poll, are in the hunt for their third title. They previously won in 1996 and 1999. This is their fifth appearance, but their first since 1999. Roseville Area lost to two other Class AA qualifiers during the regular season, losing twice to Stillwater Area, 2-1 and 5-4, and also losing to Eden Prairie 6-2. In January they defeated Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 4-3. Junior Erin Cody is the leading scorer for the Raiders. She had 32 goals and 25 assists. Senior Frances Dorr added 18 goals and led Roseville Area with 28 assists. Sophomore goalie Briana Brausen went 12-1 in the net during the regular season. Roseville Area did not submit any team statistics. Academy of Holy Angels is making its second consecutive and overall appearance. The Stars won the Class A title last year and were ranked No. 13 in this year’s final Let’s Play Hockey poll. During regular-season play the Stars also lost to Eden Prairie 6-0. They scored 125 goals during the regular season to their opponents’ 53, and they also scored 10 short-handed goals. Senior Lynn Hillen led the team with 29 goals and 25 assists, and sophomore Lauren Smith added 19 goals and 21 assists. Junior Katie Hirsch is the top goalie for Academy of Holy Angels. Her season record was 8-2-1 and her save percentage is 0.89.<br><br>Stillwater Area (25-3) vs. Eden Prairie (28-0) — 6:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23: In what could be the best game of the quarterfinals, No. 2 Stillwater Area faces off against No. 1 Eden Prairie. The Stillwater Area Ponies are making their third tournament appearance, but their first since 1997. During the regular season the Ponies defeated Cloquet-Esko-Carlton and Roseville Area twice. The C-E-C scores were 5-1 and 3-1, and the Roseville Area scores were 2-1 and 5-4. Stillwater Area scored 153 goals during the regular season to their opponents’ 56. Senior Chelsey Jones led the Ponies in scoring with 63 goals and 32 assists. Jones, who also is a finalist for the Ms. Hockey award, has 347 career points with 224 goals and 123 assists. Ninth-grader Callie Dahl is the second-leading scorer. She scored 22 goals and added 36 assists this season. Junior goalie Amanda Plumm went 25-3 in the net this year and her save percentage is 0.92. Stillwater Area credits its success to team speed, strength, and shooting ability. The Eden Prairie Eagles return after a one-year absence to make their third appearance. During regular-season play the Eagles defeated Rochester Mayo 4-0, Roseville Area 6-2, and Academy of Holy Angels 6-0. Senior Meaghan Pezon and junior Maria Stoa were the top scorers for Eden Prairie. Pezon tallied 38 goals and 42 assists during the regular season, and Stoa added 31 goals and 23 assists. Pezon is also a finalist for the Ms. Hockey award. Sophomore Maddie Burke and junior Kristen Elliot shared goaltending duties for the Eagles. Burke’s save percentage was 0.964 and Elliot’s was 0.934. Eden Prairie did not provide team statistics.<br><br>C-E-C Lumberjacks (22-5-1) vs. Moorhead (19-<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START 8) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/glasses.gif ALT="8)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> — 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23: The Lumberjacks of Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, who were ranked No. 6 in the final Let’s Play Hockey poll, are returning for their second consecutive and fourth overall appearance. They earned runner-up honors last year. This year the Lumberjacks were beaten by Stillwater Area twice, 5-1 and 3-1, and by Roseville Area once, 4-3. C-E-C took 1,062 shots and scored on 101 of them during the regular season. Their opponents scored 50 goals against them. Senior Michelle Maunu and sophomore Michelle Allen each scored 19 goals and had 22 assists for the Lumberjacks during the regular season. Maunu, who is a finalist for the Ms. Hockey award, will play for the University of Minnesota next year. Ninth-grader Sadie Lundquist was the second-leading scorer for C-E-C. She had 17 goals and 17 assists. Junior goalie Paige Thunder had a season record of 22-5-1 for the Lumberjacks, and her save percentage is 0.92. The Moorhead Spuds are returning to the tournament after a three-year absence. This is their third appearance. The Spuds, who were ranked No. 20 in the final poll, did not face any other qualifiers during the regular season. Moorhead did not provide team or individual statistics.<br><br>Class A Semifinal Highlights<br><br>Warroad (22-5-1) vs. New Prague (21-7) — 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 24: This game is a rematch of a regular-season game that Warroad won 5-4. The Warroad Warriors, who were ranked No. 4 in the final Let’s Play Hockey poll, are making their first appearance at the tournament. Warroad outscored its opponents 123 to 50 during regular-season play. Senior Holly Roberts, who is a finalist for the Ms. Hockey award, led her team with 61 goals and 29 assists. Senior Brianne Mosher was the second-leading scorer with 22 goals and 23 assists. Sophomore goalie Morgan Pieper has a save percentage of 0.897 percent. The Trojans of New Prague are making their third consecutive and overall appearance. They earned third-place honors in 2005 and were ranked No. 5 in this year’s final poll. During the regular season New Prague scored 161 goals to it opponents’ 59. Junior Jenna Kilpatrick and sophomore Kacy Ambroz scored 54 and 49 goals, respectively, during the regular season. Kilpatrick also led the team with 47 assists. Over their careers, Kilpatrick and Ambroz have tallied 399 and 211 career points, respectively. Sophomore goalie Daedra Culshaw had a 0.33 goals against average during the section playoffs. Over the course of the season, her save percentage was 0.903 percent. Neither team faced any other Class A tournament qualifiers during the regular season.<br><br>Alexandria (22-2-4) vs. South St. Paul (21-6-1) — 1:00 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24: The perennial qualifiers from Alexandria face the defending Class AA champions from South St. Paul in this quarterfinal. Alexandria, making its third consecutive and overall tournament appearance, was ranked No. 7 in the final Let’s Play Hockey poll. The Cardinals finished fourth last year. This year Alexandria scored eight short-handed goals and outscored its opponents 127-31. Sophomore goalie Danielle Justice went 14-2-2 during regular-season play and has a save percentage of .946. Sophomore Abby Williams led the offensive charge for Alexandria. She scored 34 goals and added 24 assists during the regular season. Sophomore Kathryn DelZoppo added 18 goals and 24 assists for the Cardinals. The Packers of South St. Paul, who were the top-ranked team in the final poll, are in the hunt for their second consecutive title and fourth overall. They also won in 2002 and 2003. The Packers are 95 percent on the penalty kill and credit their success to team defense and goaltending. Senior goalie Danika Porter is the top goalie for South St. Paul. She went 20-6-1 during the regular season and has a save percentage of 0.89. Junior Annie Bauerfeld and senior Jonnie Bloemers each scored 25 goals during the regular season. Bloemers, who has a hockey scholarship to Boston College next year, also led the Packers with 30 assists. Senior Jackie Robinson will play for Bemidji State on a scholarship next year. The Packers outscored their opponents 103-43. Neither team faced any other Class A qualifiers during the regular season.<br><br>Schedule<br>In Class A, the third-place game will be played at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 and the championship game will be played at noon. Both games will be played at the Xcel Energy Center.<br><br>In Class AA, the consolation semifinal games will be played at 10 a.m. and noon on Friday, Feb. 24 at Ridder Arena. The championship semifinal games will be played at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. that same day at the Xcel Energy Center. The consolation championship will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Ridder Arena. The third-place game will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m., followed by the championship game at 7 p.m., both at the Xcel Energy Center.<br><br>The championship semifinals and championship games will be broadcast live on KSTC TV, Channel 45.<br><br>Tickets and Special Promotions<br>Tickets for the 2006 State Girls’ Hockey Tournament will be available one hour before each afternoon or evening two-game session at the respective venues. Tickets cost $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for students for all championship sessions, and $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for students for all consolation sessions.<br><br>A visit to any Twin Cities metro area Wells Fargo bank can yield you $2 discount coupons for student tickets. The discount coupons are also available for the State Girls’ Gymnastics Meet (Feb. 24-25 at the adjacent Roy Wilkins Auditorium) and for the State Class A Boys’ Hockey Tournament.<br><br>At the Xcel Energy Center box office you will have an opportunity to purchase a Channel 45 Family Four Pack. For $45 you will receive four tickets and vouchers for four hot dogs and four soft drinks.<br><br>And Championship Saturday is Jersey Day. Any youth 13 years old or younger wearing their hockey jersey (sweater) qualifies for a $5.00 ticket with one paid adult ticket, also available only at the Xcel Energy Center box office.<br><br>— 30 —<br><br>Credentials are required for this tournament. Last nights edition of the local Stillwater newspaper mentioned Stillwater's Kayleigh Bell suffered a broken wrist in the section final vs. NSP Saturday night. Saw the play...she was chasing Thunstrom down behind her own net & went hard into the boards. Kayleigh is a pretty key member of the team...certainly not the best news for Stillwater at this time. Also mentioned she may play with a cast if possible. Wishing her a speedy recovery. <p></p><i></i>
