Miss Hockey

Post by hockeyparent1 »

I was wondering why there is not a Miss Hockey for defense? It is always an offensive player(that I know of), and there is also a Miss Goalie. Can anyone explain this to me.

I often ask this same question. The reason that there isn't a Ms. D is likley that it's not glamerous in this day and age to play D - especially as a true stay-at-home D that plays D first.

We've done a good job of glorifying the point scorers, and historically some of those have been called D.

True D likely will never get recognized. A player like SSP's Robertson is the ideal true D in my mind, but she won't get recognized for this distinction.

Don't get me wrong - Robertson has the capability to jump up and add some offense from her D position, as I saw firsthand in PP and other situations the other night, but she's just an amazing real D.

I believe that we should have a Ms. D, Ms. F, and Ms. G, and then a Ms. Hockey out of these three finalists. You'd do the same routine as now for Ms. Hockey & Ms. Goalie with 10 and then 5 finalists at each position pick the final 3 by positon (D/F/G) and Ms. Hockey from the final 5 @ each position at the banquet (i.e. the final 15 (5 F, D, & G) would attend the banquet for a shot at being named Ms. D, Ms. G. & Ms. F - and of these three finalists Ms. Hockey)...

On the same note, maybe the "hockey gods" deciding Ms. Hockey should change their criteria?

CDH has probably the most unsung group of defenders in the area. They play only three: Carlson, Wild, Schneeman. They are all about five feet tall and their team allowed the fewest goals in the Suburban East. Together with goalie Jobman, they kept CDH in almost every game.

Unsung Heroes

Post by hockeyparent1 »

You are so right that defense are truley the unsung heroes of the game. It takes a special person to play the position because if they make a mistake everyone notices and if they do their job, they are supposed to, and get no attention. That is awesome about the CDH defense. And thank you for noticing them and giving them the accolades they deserve. Wish there were more fans out there like you, unfortunately it's always the offense or the goalies. Go D

The more diluted an award gets, the less it means. Pretty soon there would have to be a Ms. Center, then Ms. Wing and so on.

No argument that the point getters are usually in the spot light in any sport. But when you start trying to break down and spread out the awards, they don't mean nearly as much. IMO

In a day and age when every kid gets a trophy for anything, I don't believe in diluting anything to give out more meaningless trophies. Have you ever looked at these kids' trophies? They have a ton of them and they mean next to nothing as a result...

My point is that if we're going to recognize goaltending as a key element of the game, then so be it.

Additionally, it would seem that we're typically only recognizing F's for Ms. Hockey.

For us to truly recognize all aspects of the game, we should recognize true D, not F's called D either, or "slashes" i.e. "D/F" either...

I believe we either take away the Ms. G and just have Ms. Hockey, or else you recognize the three positions.

There is no difference between C/RW/LW or LD/RD like there is in the meaning behind D vs. F vs. G in my mind.

FORGOT TO MENTION -

I also believe that a Goalie shoudl able to be called "Ms. Hockey." That title seems like it should be able to be associated with the best hockey player in the state, and it shouldn't exclude goaltenders if that is the true meaning...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 2/10/06 6:10 pm

CDH is well coached, and honestly they improved greatly as the year went on I believe. The goaltending is critical, but the team plays together well and knows how to win all those close games.
