section 1A

Post by SEhockeyDAD »

Should be New Prague's section. But if they're smart, they won't underestimate Mankato West. They played each other very early in the year with NP winning 4-0, but West is a much, much better team than they were early. They also have in Jenny Gorny a goalie that can step up and help them steal a game. Austin can make a little noise, too, but they might have to wait for next year; with no seniors, they could be the favorites in '07.

Yep, should be NP's. I only see two teams with a realistic chance for the upset (West & Austin). Both played better toward the end of last year as well. NP is a pretty experienced group though, at least the top line.

What about Marshall? Might they surprise someone??

I would have to say that Albert Lea could be a definet spoiler. They proved they can beat Austin and can skate with the best of them. Should be a fun final stretch.

AL as spoiler?

Post by dasherdude »

AL is a 7 seed at best. Their too young. I look for Austin or West to give NP a run, but that's about it.

West has a goalie capable of shutting teams down. Two years ago, She gave up a single goal in the 1A final against New Prague, but her offense couldn't solve New Prague's Culshaw.

when you get a hot goalie, anything can happen.

use the scrolling menu for sports and go to Girls Hockey
on the right hand side of the page, it lists each section and the dates of the tournament to the right there will be a little letter "B" with a link to the tournament brackets

NP, Austin & Mankato West should be winners. Faribault vs. New Ulm could be interesting; there's not much for common opponents, so its hard to guess. I'd give Faribault a slight edge because they've played a little harder schedule and have been playing well lately.

Showing class

Post by dublrunr »

Kudos to Coach Falk of Albert Lea and Coach Sipe of West for showing restraint and sportsmanship. Each team could have easily run up their respective scores into double digits against weak opponents, but instead the coaches benched their big guns.

Senior Laura Hillman (AL) also showed great maturity by sitting down the last period and giving up a chance to jump up a couple more slots on the all time scoring leader list.

The West AL game is the only one really in question in my mind. West seems like they are playing there best hockey of the season while AL has just kind of chugged along with their ups and downs. AL is definitely going to need an up tomorrow night to advance.
