Well, we've got the top seed in SSP our first game. It's easily going to be the toughest game of the year for us. SSP has tremendous overall talent. We'll probably be out shot 2-1. Lucky we have Danielle Justice in the net. She is probably the very best goalie in the state as a sophomore. Her overall record is 16-2-2 with a GAA: 1.07 and Save %: 95 Not to put the responsiblilty of the outcome on her shoulders alone, but she will be a dominating factor. The Lady Cards have a ton of heart and also have great skills. The Lady Cards have been to the big show the last two years and have had their goal to do more than just show up this year 0 for 2. OK, here's the big scoop: Alex Lady Cards 3; SSP 2 in the upset of the year! Hey, it's our dream and we're stickin' to it! The goalie can make or break a game, no doubt; but you have to have the other talent on the ice. Luckily Alex does, Big Time. We have a lot of strength with our Seniors, and with Abby Williams, Kathryn DelZoppo and Ashely Holmes as our not-so-secret weapons of mass destruction for the other teams, I believe a shutout is in the Cards (pun intended) with a score of 3 - 0. I hate to burst your bubble, but Alexandria beating SSP would hardly merit upset of the year award. First off, Alex has had a great year and is a top "A" team. I can see how you would feel its a big win and is best team you have played etc - but SSP is not anywhere near an overwhelming favorite in this game or to win State. Last year, SSP getting beat by anyone at State would have been a MAJOR upset, and despite that being the case of one of the best teams to ever play girls hs hockey, they were very close to getting beat in 1st game against Anoka!!! Anything can happen is the point. This year, they are simply a top 5 "A' team that can range from being very good to very beatable depending on their effort. SSP has a battle tested playoff goalie who is playing well, they have very good D BUT are very limited up front. If SSP shows up with a hard working effort they have a very good shot at winning 2 games. If they dont, then a lot will rely on if they find a way to scratch out a couple goals, as that may be all they need. However, make NO mistake about - SSP is very beatable and are merely one of 4 teams who could win it all - they arent close to be overwhelming favorite!!! FWIW the KRACH odds seem to point to the same thing that MNHOCKEYGAL is saying. The "odds" on the teams this year are more even than ever before. I believe Alex rates at 50 krach value or so, NP at 70 or so, Warroad 250, and SSP 275... meaning that the odds are 275/50 - or about 5-to-1 SSP, but this is by no means even comparable to years past when SSP was a 10-15-or 20-to-1 favorite @ state! Essentially the odds are 4-to-1 Warroad in Warroad/NP game, and 5-to-1 SSP in SSP/Alex Assuming that these games play out this way, the 3rd and Championship games are nearly even odds.

i agree that "a" is essentially a toss up at this point, but i like the way ssp has been playing lately and with its experience i can't bet against them. i think if they get by alex they win it all. i think alex is its toughest game.

Hubba - Shocked you stated Alex is toughest game? What makes you say that? I think if we win the 2nd game will be far tougher as they have legit star on each team that can score (Roberts and Kilpatrick). Additionally, NP handled SSP ina scrimmage earlier in year which granted doesnt mean much but I did hear Kilpatrick dominated that. By the way I do agree with you on how SSP has played. They play their game and I will bet on them, I just hope they paly their game. How good has Robertson been?

I'm going to take exception to the comment on Justice being the best sophomore goalie in the state. In two tries the last couple of years, Alex hasn't been able to put up many goals against New prague's Culshaw, who is also a sophomore

Hockeydad, that could well be that she is better...? But another thing... you have never played against her. Hmmmmm...... I looked on the new girls site that has all the stats, but your team doesn't have theirs included for most of the games thru the year. What's up with that? What are her stats for the year? Hey GHS, Just pondering here... Are the stats for last year still available? I'm just curious what the ranking for Alex and Hibbing were to compare...? If my memory serves me, Alex was ranked around 4 or 5 and Hibbing was like 45...? Can they still be found? (We took them to OT in a very exciting game.)

mngal, i say that because i think they will take them lightly because they don't know them as well as the other two teams and i think they are under the impression that alex maybe the weakest team in the field. maybe a little overconfident? robertson is playing her best hockey, hopfully it continues...

What today's Star/Tribune had to say: Game 2: Alexandria vs. South St. Paul, 1 p.m. Alexandria (22-2-4) • Why the Cardinals will win: They have shut out seven teams and held another 13 to one goal. Danielle Justice has a phenomenal .946 save percentage • Why they won't: Other than Abby Williams, who has 37 goals, nobody else on the team has more than 16. South St. Paul (21-6-1) • Why the Packers will win: South St. Paul won the Class 2A title last season, then dropped down with the small schools where they belong by enrollment. It's the state's best program in the 2000s so far. • Why they won't: Packers lost four All-State players from a year ago, and this team has scored 100 fewer goals. I think they missed our great defensive line and the fact that Abby and Delzoppo feed well off of each other. Still sticking to a shut out.

Alex could have done much worse vs SSP, as my team can attest to. When you have an off game against SSP, it usually can be quite bad on the scoreboard. Also, SSP is a good team when they're on, and I was happy to see Bauerfeld play so well. She's a kid that I thought might get the nod for All-Tourney a year ago, but didn't - so I'm hoping she gets it after the pure hattrick today (one SH, one ES, one PP I believe).

Well, we ended the season with a win!!! Great end for our girls' high school hockey experience. I won't be posting much after this season, so would like to say thanks to all those who we have interacted with here.
