checking
I dunno how often checking springs up, but I had the thought that bringing checking back in would kind of lose some of the identity of girls hockey. I actually think the girls game is better because checking itself is not a talent but a skill learned. I love watching Holly Roberts or the girl from Hibbing a couple years back stick handle around people with ease. To me it's like a beautiful painting. I remember seeing Blake's game plan against Hibbing was to use their size on the Hibbing star. Looking back I can see how the clutch & grab sort of thing really highlights the difference between the superstars from the players that are not as naturally gifted.

So with that I enjoy the girls game for what it is. I hope it stays that way, but in the end it is up to the girls. Any thoughts? And has the league ever seriously thought about bringing it in?
"Dream as if you'll live forever; Live as if you'll die today." --James Dean

Re: checking
Any thoughts in relation to if the girls' current physical training makes them ready/prepared for checking? I only ask because Chelsey Jones said in the paper she would like to see it switch over.
"Dream as if you'll live forever; Live as if you'll die today." --James Dean

Re: checking
I have had the opportunity this year to see several high level Bantam A games that had a minimum of checking in and much preferred them to most other boys games. What I have always loved about the girls game is that when played at a high level the emphasis is on skill and strategy and not who has the biggest goons.
Additionally, many parents wouldn't even start their daughters in the sport if there was checking. I have worked extensively in developing my association's girls program and this is one common misconception that I have had to clear up with many of the parents.

Re: checking
I fully agree that one of the most enjoyable things to watch in girls hockey are the pure skills.

My girls are out of hs hockey now, but I would hope to never see checking come into this game.

I have to go back and recall when I was coaching a squirt team in a tournament and we were being schooled by a great metro team that was aggressive in going for the puck...

I asked a ref between periods how they determined the difference between going for the puck and checking...

He said that they could tell if someone was going for the puck vs. taking the body.

Leave it there.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... d@mnhs>Big Red at: 3/8/06 11:16 am
