Yes.

Marshall hired as new Wildcat Hockey coach

May 20, 2005 - The St. Kate's Athletic Department has hired Brad Marshall as the new head hockey coach for the 2005-2006 season. Marshall, a 1999 University of St. Thomas graduate, brings a wealth of hockey experience to the Wildcats. Prior to arriving at St. Kate's, Coach Marshall was the head girl's hockey coach at North St. Paul High School for two seasons.

His career record at North St. Paul was 48-11 and guided the Polars to section title and a state tournament 2nd place finish in 2004. In addition to his experience with North St. Paul, Marshall was the University of St. Thomas men's hockey assistant coach for two years.

During his term with St. Thomas, the Tommies were two time MIAC regular season and playoff champions (2002, 2003) and NCAA tournament participants (2003). Coach Marshall played three years for the Tommies during his college career and was team captain in 1997 and team MVP and MIAC All Conference in 1996. Marshall also played on the 1991 Hill Murray Hockey State Championship team.

"We are excited about adding Brad to our coaching staff. His knowledge and background in high school and college hockey will be a tremendous asset as he builds our program into a conference contender," states Athletic Director Eric Stacey.

I was surprised to see how little talk there is about some of these "high profile" teams that are currently without a coach. The Minnetonka job is intriguing offer because of the facilities and chance that a player may stay instead of going to Breck or Wayzata.
Eastview is a solid program and is producing quality players and teams.
Edina is Edina. Largest youth program as far as girls go, keep the talent there instead off losing them to another school, don't take any guff from the parents, you may reach a section final. Easier said than done.
North St. Paul... there you have 2 of the metro's top 8-10 players in Thunstrom(top 3) and Hogan. Each will be close to 100 pts the coming season. You have a top 5 goalie in Scavo. You will win games, your just happen to be in the strongest/toughest section in the state.
Bloomington Kennedy... not sure if its a "high profile" job but a solid program. Needs to retain its top end players to have success.
There's MO on some of the open jobs, just wanted spark some conversation on the topic.

Little response

Post by defensedad »

I myself am glad to see very little chat on this subject. It is tough enough for the players in the situation of loosing a coach as it is. Rumors are not a good thing. In most cases that is all they are, RUMORS. You are right in saying the teams you mentioned, most coaches would love to come to be a part of that staff. But when people start talking about who is staying and who is going, it creates controversy. The schools involved do not need that. We must try and do what is best for the girls and the team.

This is as attractive as any job open right now I believe.

While in a VERY tough section, I think this team has 2 of the best skaters, and one of the best goalies, in the state - not to mention many other good players. I would think that this would be the top open job - right up there with Edina. I expect this will attract some of the best coaches as applicants.

I was a two time former applicant for this position in 2000 and again in 2003, and I'm a lifelong NSP resident, but won't be in the race this time around. Believe me, they run a top-notch program, interview process is done well, admin. @ the school is supportive & great, and this will be an excellent opportunity to make a run at a conference, section, and state championship this coming season.

Congrats to the SB team as well as they just made it to state!!! Many of the key players on that SB team are also hockey players.

When do these positions typically get filled? Too many teams can't set up summer camps/schedules.

I think a lot of programs have boosters behind the scenes that help keep things going in-between coaches.

I heard that Bill Thoreson, late of Edina HS girls, is now the head coach for boys at Andover HS. I did a google search for his name and it led me to this URL:

ww ...

A letter from the president of hte ACIC, whatever that is, announcing Bill's new position and a "meet & greet" with him earlier this week.

GOOD LUCK to Bill!
