GHS what can you tell us about Wineberg? Don't know the chap.

Gary Hughes EVHS

Gary Hughes (Augsburg '7 , one of just three Auggie men's hockey players to earn two All-American honors, returns to Augsburg as an assistant coach. A two-year captain for the Auggies, Hughes earned NAIA All-America honors in 1977 and 1978 and earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference MVP honors in 1978, Augsburg's first national championship season in men's hockey. Hughes finished his career with 92 assists, third-best in school history. Hughes was also a member of Augsburg's men's golf team. After graduating in 1978, Hughes returned to be an assistant coach on Ed Saugestad's Auggie staff in the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons. He also served as an assistant coach for Eastview HS in Apple Valley, Minn. in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. A 1973 graduate of Minneapolis Southwest HS, he was a member of a state tournament team there.

I'm excited about Huges. I've heard lots of good things, and this thread just confirms them. Wish I had that hockey background!!! Congrats to Hughes and Eastview!!!

I've only met Denny W. of BK once, but I've heard many many stories of how good a coach he is. I expect very good things this year - so nothing new out of the KHS coaching.

I believe that Kennedy may have one of the best run of coaches as any team. Marvin to start, a couple years under some guy, and then the 04-05 and 05-06 coaches are top notch (one may end up on the SCSU coaching staff and on the Olympic team to boot!!!).

Hughes has a history at EV already I guess. It makes sense. Yah it will be ineteresting to see what is to become of the recent former Kennedy coaches. Keep an ear to the ground. Hopefully the new lad can continue minus a couple of awesome talents...

r2d2...mark was the number 2 choice for edina...what happened to the number 1 choice? i heard number 1 wanted too much...booster cash and teaching spot plus a car. that's nuts. glad to see mark land the spot. he comes without strings and doesn't need the cabbage.

True, Mark was 2nd choice. I don't have facts but think about it - Dave Palmquist was # 1 but the Edina school system did not have a teaching position open for him. If he stayed at SSP for teaching, he'd have to drive across town on I-494 (or part way on 62) to get to Edina after school, and return (presumably he lives clsoer to SSP than Edina, I don't know) before rush hour is over. If you've ever driven those routes at that time of day, it's a real pain.

Would you do it, in winter yet? That's my speculation - there may be any number of other reasons, but if I were in this position, I'd think very hard about the commute.

Speaking as someone that worked in Maplewood and coached in Bloomington (which isn't as far down 494 as Edina...) the commute was a killer. Especially so I bet if you're going both there and back - in the winter - basically you'd spend less time on the ice running practice, and more than that on the roads to and from I'd bet!!!

I'd be stunned if it was about $ at all - likely just logistics. Just getting from SSP to Edina after school depending on School Release time for SSP and Practice time for Edina would be a logistical nightmare on non-game days.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 8/22/05 3:58 pm

According to sources with the team, Chuck Nichols, Chaska High School girls hockey coach, has resigned for personal reasons. Assistant coach Craig Hollenbeck has also resigned from the staff.

No link to confirm this news, an official announcement is pending. The search for a replacement is underway.

I heard this last night too. It's likley true I'm afraid and my best wished to Chuck as he was always supportive of me and my teams. Sounds like he has some more important htings to address, and totally understandable. He's ben a longtime coach, and the game will miss him and his staff. He handled this departure with class and let the kids/team know first from him.

As far as replacements go, I know there's a long-time Lake Conf. asst. in Chaska/Chanhassen that would be great. I'm sure there's others as well. It will be odd though to look at the Chaska bench and not see Chuck there!

Is Bill Quinn really going to be an assistant coach for Coon Rapids Girls Team this season?

Because he did not coach them last year at Coon Rapids. His contract does not start until OCT 31 for the school. Because there was no contract last year with Coon Rapids he can work with the kids from Coon Rapids since he is not under contract yet. It is a very gray area that the MSHSL should clear up. However he is doing nothing illegal at this time, however lets wait and see what happens.

While it may be a gray area in the MSHSL rules, most coaches moving into a new job will not take advantage of this gray area. It's a little thing called integrity.

Moreover, as a head coach, I would never allow a newly hired assistant to work with my players in the fall. It's a great way to put yourself out of favor with other coaches in a hurry.

There's a reason that certain people bounce from program to program year after year.

I agree, he should not be working with those kids, I hope my previous post did not make it sound like I was for BQ doing that. You need to keep integrity involved and teach the kids first life lessons and than hockey.

Yes I agree. With that being said, I highly doubt if BQ is going over CR's system of play with the players. He's been involved with these summer AAA teams for along time. I know that he knows the difference between right and wrong. He will have to make a decision in the summers to come though.
